My favourite wah is the EHX Crying Tone, all the others come way behind. The Dunlop Cry Baby is pretty OK but always seems so well brought-up and reasonable. The Color-Tone wah has an interestingly cranky sound but tends to fall apart when used. The Morley is great technically but only does what it has decided to do and no more (good for some people but not for me). The Schaller wah is precise. The Danelectro Wahs are plastic, end of story. The Digitech JHE wah is interesting but the sound, as often with Digitech, does not rock out. The Boss wah is OK and, just like the Boss Volume, average. The Ibanez Weeping Demon is a notch better than the Boss….this list can go on for a long time.

Answer to the quandary: EHX Big Muff Crying Tone!

White on black does get painful after a while and red on black is really hard for me. When the reading starts hurting my eyes I realise its time to turn the laptop off and play some music.

Absolutely John J. And an EHX True Tape Echo would be really cool and also extraordinary since EHX started its incredible delay and echo reputation based on the fact that they did the tape thing without a tape! Of course, some brands offer Tape Echos without tape. Well, that just does not work, however Lo-Fi or Plastic Synthetic they make them.
And any reel-to-reel tape recorder can be looped so as to function as an echo machine. Cheap and great fun to experiment with.

I join St.Bede on this one. The crazier the better, whatever voltage it takes.

    The Deluxe Rig

OK, right! Time to get my Freedom Amp in good working order! Strange that I have a re-issue Fender Mustang too, not to mention the same pedals and the same pedal bag. I note the Hot Foot is linked to the Muff whereas I preferred to link mine to the Delay setting on the Memory Man.
    Great work! :thumb:

Now that I have ordered the EHX Voice Box, the Holy Stain is the next on my list of must-haves. And the Dan Miller demo is what sold me.
Great thing about EHX pedals is that they always go over the top and beyond the realms of what you, I, us, we have in our minds when we start to use them ( as opposed to Boss, good, simple, sturdy pedals that they are).
So I would go for a Holy Stain with the whole nine yards, limit myself to what I think I’m looking for and gradually move on from there. I reckon the day would come when Half a Holy Stain no longer sufficed.

Meanwhile the immediate solution for Half a Holy Stain would be to get a Metal Muff and put it through the Nano Holy Grail just to tweak in a bit of colour.

I tried out the first Golden Throat in Luc Mettler’s Audio shop in Pigalle, Paris, France. The sound was seriously amazing. However, being a post-war Englishman, I immediately lost two fillings in my teeth and had to stop the session before hurriedly leaving the place with a mumble of appreciation. The Golden Throat delivered a powerful punch.

A famous cult band with an extremely rare recording featuring EHX pedals. I just saw one for sale on eBay.

OK, a pint of milk a day feeds the system pretty well. It worked for me. Meanwhile, check out an EHX Crying Tone Wah if you can. Really interesting pedal. Would fit News From Nowhere’s musical universe really well. Vintage Crying Tones are sometimes available on eBay or in music shops (as in around Soho)
EHX has not yet re-issued these incredible treadle effects.
Some interesting stuff about the CTs on this EHX Pan Pedal Forum link:

Right! So there would be the Fat Mistress (dedicated to Noel Redding and the JHE) consisting of a Deluxe Flanger Hoax with integrated and separately controllable Filter Matrix and Slap Back Delay and Stereo Output…
…as well as there being the Big Mistress (dedicated to John Paul Jones and LZ) consisting of two Electric Mistresses working either in parallel A + B or in loop mode A > B or B > A with integrated and separately controllable Filter Matrixes and Stereo Output.
…and both the Fat Mistress and the Bog Mistress would have a treadle for foot control of given values, such as delay time, filter matrix, oscillator speed, envelope etc.

Shaftesbury Avenue in London, just East of Soho. Lots of music shops in the area with Electro-Harmonix gear. That’s where I picked up my #1 Echo just a while back.

Well….to get back to Tube Reverb and Tape Echo, the best Tape Echo I ever used comprised two Revox reel-to-reel tape recorders with the tape running from one to anothher over a distance of about five feet before looping back again.
Otherwise for live gigs I often used and still have the Korg 500 Stage Echo with multiple tape heads. A great machine with true analog sound-on-sound. A modern EHX version of the Korg Stage Echo would be simply fantastic. (I tried out the Pigtronix Echolution which is really good but does not offer any equivalent sound-on-sound functions)
Tube Reverb is generally warm, very effective, super expensive and has a tendency to emit low hums, unless you buy the even more expensive TRs. An XO TR from EHX could be interesting though.
…and, yes….I really like echo ever since my first WEM Copicat.
