My plea to EHX….talking of vintage pedals and large enclosures….is it possible for one of the EHX staff to give us some info on the possible/not possible re-issue of the great Crying Tone pedal series?
Used one of mine again in a session last Thursday, coupled with a vintage Deluxe Octave Multiplexer, a vintage Deluxe Big Muff, a vintage Deluxe Electric Mistress and ( I absolutely agree, already an EHX classic) a Stereo Memory Man with Hazarei, playing a custom Fender Telecaster with Shadow PU, and putting the whole lot into a Vox amp. Talk about getting hooked on the EHX mojo! The two other guitarists there spent quite a lot of time trying to figure out where the sounds were coming from. The Crying Tone is a great vintage pedal. My plea to EHX…..!
WatsonWoodMemberI have used EHX effect pedals with a custom Deagan Electravibe since the 1970’s and have always found them fantastic. (The Electravibe is what I am playing on the link below where even the amp is an Electro-Harmonix!)
And the reason I love EHX pedals is because, as you say, they always give more and help us sound maniacs push the sonic envelope …preferably in stereo nowadays!Edit: I have added some blue to my design suggestion for the Freezer to get a little more “freeze” in the mix!
WatsonWoodMemberBeautiful piece of music, freshchops. Thanks for sharing with us, appreciated.
WatsonWoodMemberDefinitely what the SMMH is geared for….and the electric sitar is truly psychedelic. Great demo! :thumb:
WatsonWoodMemberGreat to see someone pick up on the idea and the name PabloEire and I talked about on the HOG Demo by Dan Miller topic posted by Scott:

There is certainly a lot to be said for the Freezer pedal concept. All ideas and support welcome!

but the new ones are just good for pedalboardsMy thoughts entirely even if I only have two XOs for the moment.
WatsonWoodMember“Commerce free zone” sounds good to me.

The Vintage Les Paul Lemon Drop has the added feature of inverted polarity when both PUs are working which also gives a hybrid-type sound scape on the guitar, no doubt the reason why I use it so much.

With the Deagan Electravibe the output of the instrument is so enormous, especially with initial impact of the mallet(s) on the key(s), that the humbucker effect you describe is amplified considerably but in a very pleasing way, at least for me. (The Black Finger features on the YouTube “Wagram Jam” link below).
If I remember correctly the Black Finger was originally developed on the basis of Carlos Santana’s characteristic guitar style, therefore the pedal does work best with solo lead lines. Personally, for compression on clear guitar chords I tend to use the Soul Preacher unit integrated in the vintage Deluxe Big Muff.
….and I look forward to your Black Finger sound bites!May 18, 2009 at 2:38 pm in reply to: Thinking of getting a new guitar… I have a bit of a dilemma #96818WatsonWoodMemberI also use a Gibson SG, but a Special with twin humbuckers. Great sound in EHX pedals, just as I also get a great, but different, sound using a Fender US Stratocaster Standard Plus from ’92. However, my everyday workhorse with which I develop most of my sounds is the guitar pictured below, and designed by Trevor Wilkinson who also helped design the US Standard Plus Strat.
:rawk:WatsonWoodMemberOne way to approach the issue would be to proceed step-by-step, releasing Limited Edition EHX CDs of historic audio demos for sale, with extracts of the clips available on the website. It may take a while but at least it could get off to a start and show what interest there is out there before working on the whole archive at once.
WatsonWoodMemberRight, I think I am going to start twiddling the trim pots on one of my Electric Mistresses, do the same with my Small Stone and then get hold of a Soul Preacher and experiment with that. Afterwards, depending on what is going in the right direction, I will start combining them.
And I will soon be back in the studio where an Ampeg Scrambler is waiting and I will see if I am able to get a more precise “sitar” effect this time, and start noting pot positions.WatsonWoodMemberThat is what I call a great, mean sound. Have you tried putting it through the Octave Multiplexer? With your precise playing it should sound really good.
WatsonWoodMemberI know what you mean! …I reckon that the muff unit in the DOMs I have is the Big Muff Pi, however I will see if someone can tell us precisely. I have enclosed a pic of one my two DOMs, both of which are this model which I think is the original vintage DOM.
Meanwhile, keep looking out for vintage Deluxe Octave Multiplexers. Of the two I have now, I bought one in the UK from a store closing sale, and one in Germany on eBay. They each cost over 200 Euro and this was a few years ago, so I expect prices to have gone up, at least on this model.WatsonWoodMemberYes, I can imagine that could be a Deluxe Frequency Analyzer with integrated Big Muff and Tone Wicker.
