The EH ManModeratorQuote:Ok here’s what happened… The Freedom Amps don’t seem to specify whether they are guitar, bass, or PA. My guess is guitar. They are black, no reverb, Vol/Tone/Bite controls… IIRC.
Sounds like the guitar model. I think the PA and Bass models would say PA or BASS on them.
Quote:But the socket looked like one that you could easily get at Home Depot or Lowes… but I could be wrong. It’s a bummer about the Freedom Amp though… maybe I can get him to find one of those cords and get it going.
I made my own cord with a standard 2-prong AC cord I cut off a broken appliance and a socket I bought at the hardware store.
The EH ManModeratorQuote:but it still worked off a battery right?40, yes I said 40, “D” cells. And not the rechargeable ones, although I guess you could use those but you couldn’t recharge them in the amp. Mainly just your big ol’ flashlight batteries.
The EH ManModeratorQuote:55 watts?damn
I’m talking about the 70’s version, not the newer EHX one in the little wooden cab.
The EH ManModeratorI think you’ve pretty much said it all. Now get yourself a Super Replay.
The EH ManModeratorThe Mike Matthews Freedon Amp was available in 3 models: standard, bass, and PA. All were available in 3 power options: AC, AC/DC, or DC operation. They were also available in red or black tolex. If he’s got a bass one, I’d be very interested in it. I have a couple of the guitar ones and the only PA one I’ve ever seen (it has built-in reverb).
They’re all approx. 55W into a heavy-duty CTS spkr (10″, I believe). Great amps and loud as hell! The EH ManModeratorQuote:Thanks Ron! Is there any significance to the “#7” sticker inside?Probably the Quality inspector.
The EH ManModeratorThe first MMs were released around 1976.
Be careful taking it apart and don’t break any wires.
The biggest problems on those is the solder joints for the filter caps. Resolder those then glue the caps to the board with silicone.More info: http://electroharmonix.ronsound.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=30&Itemid=45
The EH ManModeratorProbably 1978-79. I think the 4-knob was discontinued when the 5-knob was released.
The EH ManModeratorI’d have to check to make sure, but I believe the hole in the back panel is original.

Here’s an image:
And here’s the story:
http://electroharmonix.ronsound.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=38&Itemid=45I wonder how many dollars people would be shelling out for a black-battery-door one nowadays…
??? Do you have one?
The EH ManModeratorQuote:Quote:Yeah, I’ve seen the Pigtronix Attack Sustain and unfortunately I’m a shallow SOB who doesn’t like many boutique pedals… haha. Besides, the Attack Sustain is uggggly. However, if I get desperate, I’ll probably suck it up and get the it. I’ll just have to hold out hope I can find a vintage Attack Decay at a good price or that EHX reissues them. That’s a bummer about the delay ICs… didn’t know that. Definitely something to consider.yeah, my big sticking point with buying an Attack Sustain is how freaking ugly that pedal is. It’s stupid and vain, I suppose, but man I wish they made a version that actually looked cool.
Don’t take this as criticism, but I can’t understand how a pedal’s appearance matters a hill of beans if it does what you want.

I believe that it’s never been the delay IC yet but that could be because they use the Panasonic chips which seem to have better life to them.
The EH ManModeratorQuote:Quote:Plus it doesn’t use a delay IC that’ll eventually go bad.So should we be stocking up on Reticons and Panasonics? I hate to think that my time-based EHX boxes will be dead in the coming years 😥
Luckily the guys over the DIYstompboxes forum are working on a board that’ll allow you to replace the SAD1024 with an MN3007, which is cheap, still available, and quieter. They initially did it for their DIY ADA flanger but I asked them to produce a board for the SAD1024 replacement on other pedals. Hopefully they’ll be able to do the same for the SAD512 used in early DOD and MXR pedals.
The EH ManModeratorWhat are they worth? Whatever you can get out of it.
Seriously, they run around $600+ on ebay because there were apparently only a few hundred or so made.
If you want the same effect, you can try the Pigtronics ASDR Attack Sustain. It’ll do everything the Attack Decay and more. Plus it doesn’t use a delay IC that’ll eventually go bad.The EH ManModeratorQuote:Big Muff Pi:Nice set of links that will come in handy, I’m sure. The Big Muff link doesn’t work because of the space so just copy and paste it.
