I’ve had tone success running a modeling device into the .44 mag. Look at my previous post.
For some reason it works.
I normally play through a Vox AC-30 and a Boogie MarkIV.t.shamoneMemberI use this. It works really well.
I might stick a distortion box in between so I don’t have to use amp models for that.
Very cool portable amp that can DI as well.
t.shamoneMemberSame thing happening if you plug in direct?
t.shamoneMemberAre you using a speaker cable or guitar cable to your cab?
t.shamoneMemberHere is my “porta-amp” setup finalized. I’ve gigged with it a few times and it works great. The .44 mag sounds great through this Carvin cab. If I know the place I’m playing has a good cab, I’ll just bring the pedal board. The LPB-2ube is the magic in the chain and even works great in front of solid state amps. It’s so portable (everything is on a pedaltrain mini) I’ll bring it for a backup even when using my larger amps.

You can get some real nice overdrive out of this box but as with all gain stages, you have to be careful about noise.
Live it might not be as noticeable but you said you want to go direct to record.
For me, it’s about tube feel, the two stages respond to touch and dynamics very nicely, breaking up and cleaning up with your picking. I don’t really use it as a “distortion box” but just to get that tube overdrive. I use an AdrenaLinn 3 before it so I would call up a distorted amp model and send it through the tubes.
The Black Finger looks like a cool piece, try it out first. I took the plunge with the 2ube based on what I know about tube equipment(I have a studio with tube mic pres/equalizers/compressors and Boogie Mark 4/Vox AC-30/Gibson GA-5 amps) and what other people were saying. I’m very happy with it.t.shamoneMemberI bought the .44 Mag to be a backup and a super portable setup. I hook an AdrenaLinn and a LPB-2ube into it and it becomes complete. The tube preamp gives it extra touch and warmth and I can get lot’s of sounds out of it. I play at a lot of places that have cabs already, I’m just going to mount this stuff on a pedal board. I also have a Carvin 2 x 12 to plug this into. Very cool. In this pic I’m testing it out through my Boogies speaker.

t.shamoneMemberWell I tried the .44 Mag into both cabs. The 16 ohm cab seems to break up (distort) earlier that the 8 ohm cab. Remember there are different speakers involved so there is no science going on here. The relative loudness seems the same, I don’t have a db meter to measure. Now that I think of it, I should have used a recording device to measure the loudness and record the sound so I could review it. Oh well, next time.
t.shamoneMemberSounds like a cool idea. The only problem I can think of is the high gain/low gain switch is global. If you plug your guitar directly into it, you want it on high gain. If your effects send it a line level signal, then you want it on low gain or else you might overload it and get distortion. It’s possible you might be able to compensate by keeping the return channel drive/volume low, or by balancing levels between channels and effects without creating noise. I’m not sure. I go into one from a effects box(AdrenaLinn 3) and had to put it on low gain because the box would drive it too hard.

It”s a stereo device that has 1/4″ ins and outs. You can cascade the two channels together and drive the tubes at different levels. Each channel has it’s own drive and volume so you can do master volume type things. I’ve found if you drive the right tube hard and the left tube soft you get classic overdrive sounds. If you do the opposite, right soft and left hard you get clean warm fat sounds. Drive both, play with the volumes, I’m still playing with it.
t.shamoneMemberI just got the .44 mag. The instructions say it works with both loads but is best at 8 ohms. I’m not an expert but I don’t think the 16 ohm load will cut the wattage exactly in half but I could be mistaking.I’m going to use mine with a 8 ohm 2 x 12 cab. I have a 2 x 12 amp with a 16 ohm load. Even though they have different speakers, I’m going to hook up the .44 to both and do an A/B to see how different they are.
t.shamoneMemberI’m using this setup into a Carvin 2×12 cab. The combination of effects, the LPB-2ube and the .44 Mag make for a really good sounding and super compact backup amp or small gig amp. In this pic, it’s not mounted on a pedalboard yet and I’m testing it through my Boogie’s speaker. If I’m using my main amps (Boogie/Vox AC-30) I’ll bring this as a backup amp. If a tube goes on me, I’ll just plug my amps speaker into this setup. For other gigs, I’ll use it as my main amp through the Carvin cab.
