If you plug it backwards you get bypass sound but when you turn it on nothing happens. If the wire that was loose had like a ring at the end, then that’s the ground wire, which should be screwed to one of the bottom screws. Try using a fresh, new battery instead of the daisy chain.

Put the lpb at the end of the chain for an overall boost. The compressor will cancel the lpb because that’s what it does: it evens the volume signal, so if suddenly the signal gets louder, the compressor will make it less louder (is it quieter the word?).

It is a good idea, to change between filter matrix and flanger on a DEM.
