I can only refer to my personal ,ancient history but in 73-74 when I bought mine,Echo without tape
was like the invention of the wheel,( at least in my part of the world).
There was a little background noise intrinsic to the unit and the delay length wasn’t quite as long, but Hallelujah! no more tape to tangle or break !! and I could put the majic box right in the bag with my other stomp boxes for transport.It was also not much affected by rough handling.
I’m sure the newer models are quieter and more refined. Tinker with it until you get to know it and you’ll seldom be parted !
As for my own MM, finding someone to do electronic repair in this area has proven to be quite a challenge and these days, I’m never sure if I’d have cash on hand to pay for the work anyway.
I’m sure my problem would be easy to correct for somone who knew what they were doing but you may as well ask me to translate Sanskrit as to read a schematic.
I sorely miss my MM, plus a Small Stone and Electric Mistress that both succumbed to years of storage in the Florida humidity.(A clear case of criminal neglect on my part), The latter 2 in particular,since I’m currently gigging with some folks on Bass.
And yeah, you can easily get that U2/Edge sound out of it and that’s just scratching the surface,my friend. There were sounds I got from mine ,way back when, I’d consider pretty common that I’d hear 5-10 years later (with a sense of irony) on some wildly successful rock radio tune !

RDRustydawgMemberMy old faithful Memory man, which would be roughly the same era as Marc’s, just took a dump too.
Symptoms were slighty different…delay started fading as unit warmed up and ultimately no signal is passing thru from input to echo/out or direct out. Signal passes to amp when footswitch is depressed.
The Memory Man has been my constant companion since the mid 70s after I lost my echoplex to fire and I sorely miss it’s presence . Set at lower levels the Man always proved a much better alternative to the V4 Ampeg’s (that I still play thru) reverb when not providing the more out front delay effects. I’m glad I happened on your post while searching for some clue as to what’s gone wrong with it. I may not have the same problem that you were experiencing but at least I have a vague idea of what the trouble is.
Believe I know the man to contact here near Tampa Fl. who can help.
