There is an amp technician down in Freo that has a specific service to convert any 110volt amplifier to 240volts AC. Well he sells guitars, speakers, amps, valves etc. and does guitar repairs. Also builds his own amps!
But as far as I know he’s the only one I feel comfortable enough to convert my Deluxe Electric Mistress to 9 volts DC (or 18v, whatever it requires), as I am too scared to muck around inside the circuit myself. It’s my favourite effect pedal but the power cord annoys me too, because it runs on a different voltage to the mains power, and I don’t like using the step-down transformer.
Is it just me or do most people who use EHX effects also seem to use fender guitars? I do, a lot of the time and it looks like a few of you guys also use fenders.
Just an interesting thing thats been playing on my mind for a while – discuss
I don’t.
I use my ESP ltd ec-400, which is a Les Paul copy & has humbucking pickups.
And I swear by my EHx pedals.
I prefer analogue as much as possible, particularly for modulation. And of course amps!
I do use a digital delay (Boss DD-20), which I am very happy with, although I do set its Tone quite dark, because I like how analogue delay darkens the delayed sound.
I think my POG is digital, I’m not sure.
My main guitar is an ESP ltd ec-400, mahogany body & maple, and I think an ebony fretboard (or a dark rosewood?), see-thru-“black”-cherry (actually a deep cherry red colour), with two Suhr Doug Aldrich humbucking pickups, with a coil-tap and improved tone pot.
My other guitar is an ESP ltd ec-100qm, agathis body with quilted maple top & rosewood fretboard, also see-thru-black-cherry, and has two Seymour Duncan humbuckers, an SH-8 Invader in the bridge, and an SH-2 Jazz in the neck.
Is the CE-2 no good? I always figured that was similar in sound to the CE-1 but in a compact form…or am I totally wrong about that? (I’ve never actually used either!)
In fact there are people that actually prefer the CE-2 over the CE-1.
I have not used either unfortunately, but I have some good sound samples from Flaser-Phanger’s web site and did a “blind test” while listening to them. My favourite sounded very warm and had that deep swirl- and that turned out to be the CE-1.
The CE-2 was close, but it was a bit more brighter, and so the chorusing was not as thick, well not as thick as I like it to be. Others like the CE-3 and CE-5 sounded a bit brittle.
I’ve tried the newer CE-5 (which is digital, not analogue) and it sounded quite brittle to me. The CH-1 was ok but not what I expected. I guess if I fiddled with it more I would like it, but my H2O trumps all of Boss’ chorus pedals, apart from the Mother CE-1.
I think the CE-20 is a great idea, and I guess with more fiddling it would be good too. But I don’t like that it uses COSM modelling rather than an analogue BBD circuit with just tone filters & adjusters to replicate the different Boss Chorus pedals.
Yes. the CE-2 is meant to be the CE-1 in a compact form, but truly there is something different about it that I wish was not so.
And yes, I am one of those that isn’t so crazy about the Small Clone. I heard a demo yesterday that was the first I thought was good.
I know that John Frusciante uses one of the Boss chorus pedals, but does anyone know if he ever used the Small Clone?
He used the Boss CE-1 Chorus Ensemble, which is analogue, and probably the best chorus Boss has ever made (forget the CE-5….). And also, one of the best Choruses ever made.
Yep, thanks for the tip mate. I fixed it now. That pic is actually three times as big originally, hehe.
lol…man, you like your chorus eh?
How does the H20 compaire to others? I’ve never tried a visual sound pedal, they just aren’t that plentiful in the UK and you almost never see used ones around…..I’m also one of the people who actually like thier new designs!!
Haha, yeah there’s just something about that effect that really grips me… Funnily enough one of my favourite examples is the chorus/flanged bass guitar in Tool’s 1996 song “46 & 2”, rather than multitudes of 80’s radio hits. Of course though early Mercyful Fate is another big influence and they layered the chorus on more than Michael Landau!
I have plans to make my own Leslie system too! I have the treble horn & a compression driver, just need to put it all together.
I really like the H2O. It gets a bit “swooshy” when you use higher gain, yet my cabling is atrocious so no wonder it’s picking up a lot of noise. For the past few months due to work I’ve just been jamming at home so I’m not worried about it at the moment.
I really like that it has a dedicated delay time control- you get the chorus either light or nice and “gooey” (that detuned sound), without the pre-delay stutter. This makes it very useful because you can change the character of the chorus, so it’s a lot more than just slow & phasey or fast throbbing wobble. In fact keeping the width a bit mild and turning up the delay time, with a slow rate, is a great sound. I still play around with the settings. At the moment I use it for the more ambient atmospheric stuff- the Echo is for loooooooooooonnnnnnggg droning repeating echo trails. And also I use it to thicken/chorus up the organ sound from the POG.
I’ll play around with it more over the next few days to give you more feedback.
I haven’t tried out the newer design H2O, or the single-pedal Liquid Chorus.
