You can get the identical 3PDT switch from here for less: (shipping’s less too, I buy all by 3PDT’s from arons store.)
http://diystompboxes.com/zencart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1Ned FlandersModeratorBasically you need to locate the input jack, effect input, output jack, effect output then wire it as per usual TB. It involves making a cut in the circuitboard trace. I’ve never done a sovtek smallstone personally so I couldn’t talk you thru it like I could with a sovtek muff. I could do it for you if I had the pedal but that’s impossible me being in OZ and all. theEHman could probably offer some advice about it.
There’s really nothing to it though, its quite simple.
Ned FlandersModeratorQuote:Nice find. It took me several years of trading back and forth on ebay to find a tall font green that I liked. Most were really dull and lifeless sounding. They are amongst the coolest looking of the Sovteks. I don’t think there is a meaner looking pedal. I have two, but the paint is in awful condition on mine. Yours looks intact. For some reason the early green Muffs have the most problem with the paint flaking off.Ya know kit out of the 3 tall font first issue green SBM’s only one has flaky paint and that’s the one in near mint condition with only a couple of scrapes where you can see its flaky. The other two I have the paint is hard as and not flaky whatsoever. They have some chips and a lot of scrapes but you can see its not flaky.
This is the near-ish mint one with flaky paint:
And these are the other two with really hard paint: (the darker two)
So, I dunno what the deal is…
Ned FlandersModeratorCool.
The little latch needs to be thicker so it grabs hey…
Ned FlandersModeratorHe makes some ok sounding stuff and he does seem like a nice guy, I was just using him as an example. His assembly is very poor though, well it was/is but lately, like the past month or so I have seen some better enclosures being done. Its the circuit assembly and wiring that is horrid though.
If people are happy paying 150-180 for that then that’s their concern. I certainly wouldn’t pay that much for a cobbled together pedal by someone who’s only been making pedals for 2 years or less.
If he, and some others, just spent a little more time on quality and precision they would have an ok product.
What I said still stands though. I know a few overnight solder jockeys now classified as respected “boutiquers” and I know other guys who have been designing pedals for over 30 years and are EE’s who get little to no recognition for their contributions to the pedal world. Its that kinda thing that bugs me to a certain degree, seeing inexperienced people sell there “quality products” to the public and get all this recognition and respect yet they know basically very little about building pedals, they are just tweakers.
I could sell my pedals under my own name, they would look and sound a shit load better than some of the stuff on the market today but I don’t want to be classified as one of them people I’m complaining about as I haven’t been making pedals for 5 years yet, although I have been into electronics since I was a kid. If I were to sell my pedal designs I would license the design out to another company and have it be totally anonymous. If no company wanted to do that I would consider making them myself but that would take a lot of procrastination and consideration.
I have no problem with DIYers selling pedals, that would make me a hypocrite as I’ve done so myself in the past. There’s some really good quality stuff out there like skinpimp, John Lyons, SUF etc they put in some real effort in their production and deserve recognition for that. Its just the crookedly drilled enclosures, paper decal, taped up snapped of perf board, and spaghetti wiring pedals I don’t like seeing people pay $180 for , its a rip IMO!!!
If you’re gonna make pedals, do it right and have some pride in your workmanship and patience in your work!
Ned FlandersModeratorThat is true. You know the guy “Aen” (his real name is Ben) from dwarfcraft devices?, well he was asking me how a 3PDT switch works and how to add tone controls in to fuzzes, adding sag controls and make passive feedback loopers one month then the next year ( less than 6 months later) he’s a so called boutiquer and all the cool stores are stocking his misaligned and shoddy drilled boxes. The pedal biz is really a crazy one, overnight solder jockeys get huge success and then skillful people can get none.
This is one example of at least 3 I’ve seen in the past two years happen. First I’m getting PM’s about novice stuff then they are selling US$180 “boutique” pedals!
Ned FlandersModeratorYep, saw that one. if I had the money I would have payed it but I didnt as I’ve just bought a new sovtek in the last few weeks so my big muff fund is low.
I’ll get it up again and get a CW eventually, I’ll just sit on the money.
What about that idiot that said his CW was all original except for being TB by keely and it took him (keely) 25 hours to work out how to TB it, did you see that? Its bullshit as I could TB a sovtek in 10 minutes when I was first getting into electronics. SO unless keely is a complete idiot this guy is full of spin.
Then you see gut shots and all the original militarty styled wiring harness is gutted and replaced…all original my ass.I wont buy modified muffs, I’ll by broken ones (depends whats broken though) but never modified ones as there’s only a few people in the world I trust to touch my big muffs with a soldering iron and I’m one of them.
Ned FlandersModeratorQuote:Never letting mine go now. Also, I hear that the Bass Muff is the same or close to a green Sovtek muff so if you needed that Russian sound, wouldn’t that suffice with a mod or two?I was comparing them, and you dont really need to mod anything, they are essentially identical.
Ned FlandersModeratorYeah I saw that but some had faults/were modified.
Ned FlandersModeratorYeah I thought you had at least 30.LMAO you put j mascis to shame!!!
If you ever sell a CW (color is irrelevant) email me about it first before putting on ebay or whatever, I’ll likely try and buy if from you.
I’m buying the 2008 3003-C next week, i haven’t bought a modern muff in a while…since the TW anyways and I want that one for the collection as it sounds unbelievable. other than that I think one of the next ones will be a bubble font cast sovtek as I already have three tall fonts from 94 (i think you said they’re from 94) or so and dont really need anymore of them.
Ned FlandersModeratorKit, strangely enough I’ve never asked you this, how many big muffs do you actually own? I own 10 working ones/12 in total and I know you own way more than me….so how many? 30? 40?

Ned FlandersModeratorQuote:There are actually two different sizes of the plastic battery door that fit the different Sontek cast aluminum enclosures, so you would have to decide which to make, or both. One won’t fit all the big box Sovteks. Probably the one that fit the early green Russians is more prevalent. Problem is, the damn things are so loose they would just fall out again. It would help if they were reengineered a bit.I have both, so if Ron can’t help, let me know.
I’m interested in getting knobs if you plan on making plenty!
Yeah, even with the battery door i still need to use clear tape over it so they are pretty well useless.
I never knew about the two different sizes, what muffs the other size for,CW, RAOD???
Ned FlandersModeratorI have one battery door but i am to fearful too part with it even for this LMAO as they are extremely rare and should it go missing in the post I will be gutted!
I would be perfectly happy to make a mold myself if told how to do it, i am very intuitive and pickup real quick at all things DIY. SO the offer is there anyways.
Hopefully Ron can do something maybe…he’s a good guy that you can trust completely BTW!
I have thought about making the plastic doors myself actually as I need another two and I would actually like to have about 10-20 on hand for future Sovtek purchases. If someone doesn’t beat me to it i will eventually make some myself anyways. I know Kit also is interested in this as he has mention it to me previously.
Ned FlandersModeratorIf you wanna find out if its different, take the knobs of,unscrew the pots and switch flip the PCB and take a good pic of it then we can tell you if its just a stock muff or not.
