Muff DiverMember
Thanks, Supersoberguy! I’ve added a few members to my EHX family now. I’ve added a Deluxe Big Muff, a Germanium OD, a Soul Food and an OD Glove. I hope the pedal stork will be delivering an EHXTortion sometime in the near future. I guess I’ll have to update the family photo sometime. I’m pretty sure all my EHX pedals were made in NYC, USA.
Muff DiverMemberThanks for the reply, and I do know there aren’t any germanium “chips”. I found this on a site dealing with the fuzz and distortion development timeline:
2010 EHX GERMANIUM 4 BIG MUFF Pi v13
This is a completely brand new circuit design, not based on the common four stage Big Muff circuit at all. The design incorporates two independant circuits based on Bob Myer’s original designs. Each includes two Germanium transistors. The four NOS NKT275 transistors in the G4BM are evaluated in the standard listening QC check that is done with every EHX pedal to determine if the pedals is suitable to go out the door. How long these NOS transistors will be available is unknown.
“The G4BM definitely has its own sound. But with the adjustability of the circuit, you can get a wide variety of tones, including more vintage fuzz tones, OD tones, as well as raunchy distortion. It doesn’t have that great saturation as the Big Muff though, as we were aiming for more of a Distortion/Over Drive type of thing…What we came up with was a pedal that captures the warmth of the germanium sound and is capable of going from completely clean, to warm and smooth, to insane and over the top.” – EXH designer Daniel Shin
So now I’m assuming they both use NOS transistors.
Muff DiverMemberI have both a new Big Muff and a 1981 Version 6 Big Muff and neither one of them have anything under the Electro-Harmonix logo on the front. The box you posted looks official, too. The one on the left is my V6 and the one on the right is the reissue. Mine don’t even have USA on them. Yours looks like it’s authentic, but I’m no expert.
Muff DiverMemberMuff DiverMemberThere is a switch inside the unit that gives you the choice of using true bypass or buffered bypass, but it should still output a signal when off in either position. Mine works just fine with the One Spot power supply. Sounds like there may be something else wrong with it.
Muff DiverMemberSorry, but I see from the write up on EH’s product page that it is supposed to be like a Klon Centaur. I just got one of these amazing little pedals, and it is by far the best overdrive I’ve ever used. Do a search on Youtube for Soul Food Vs. and there are all kinds of shootouts between it and several Klons, a Boss SD-1, a Tubescreamer and some other boutique pedals and even a JHS modded Soul Food! I have to say that it stands up extremely well compared to all those other more expensive pedals. It absolutely eats the SD-1 and Tubescreamer for lunch. It is so clear and open it makes my ears smile. I can’t wait to get off work and get home so I can play with it some more.
Muff DiverMemberGot my Deluxe Big Muff and Soul Food Tuesday and should get my Germanium OD today. I must say… I’ve never had the pleasure of using a Klon, but if it’s any better than the Soul Food, I’d have to hear it in person with my own 2 ears. That little thing is awesome! The Deluxe Big Muff is another EH pedal that will take a while to explore completely. So many sonic possibilities. I’m looking forward to Labor Day weekend so I’ll have some extra time to experiment with it. Awesome stuff EH!
Muff DiverMemberThree more additions to my EH family! I just ordered a Germanium Overdrive, a Soul Food and a Deluxe Big Muff Pi. They should be here the first of next week. I’m like a kid waiting for Santa Claus… except I had to pay for these toys!
Muff DiverMemberIf you’re using single coil pickups, there will always be some hum. I know from my own experience that you need a really good power supply for most EH pedals. I got a cheap power supply with my Holy Stain when it came from Guitar Center and it sounded like crap (I didn’t order it, they just sent it). I thought something was wrong with the pedal! The clean setting made more noise than the fuzz or distortion and the reverb sounded like hell! I then got a good power supply out and it fixed everything. No more hum and noise. This is just my experience. It might not be yours, but I do hope it helps.
Muff DiverMemberMuff DiverMemberHmmm… I was under the assumption it was more of a Fulltone PlimSoul clone, if you want to call it that. Now I’m interested in hearing what the official stance is on it.
Muff DiverMemberI finally got a picture of my Muff Family. I’m now planning on getting a Deluxe Big Muff to go along with the rest of the gang. The big boy on the left is my V6 and the one on the right with the LED is my Reissue. Of all of these, the V6 is still my favorite. The Germanium 4 is very interesting, but quite different. The Tone Wicker is probably my favorite of the new breed of Muff pedals. And before anyone points out that the Holy Stain isn’t a Muff… I am well aware of that fact. It is an EH pedal, though.
The background I photographed them on was printed on banner material using a pack of strings I scanned. It’s a little blurry, but turned out quite nice, considering. I’ve got the banner hanging on the wall in my music room now.
Muff DiverMemberI LOVE my Holy Stain. The fuzz and drive are both very good. The reverbs are both sweet and warm and the tremolo is very vintage sounding, too. The octave effect is pretty decent, but nothing really spectacular. I will give one word of advice…. only use a really good quality power adapter with it. A cheap one will cause the unit to make a lot of hum and noise. All in all, a really great and versatile pedal.
April 17, 2014 at 11:58 am in reply to: Need suggestions for smoother boost after Big Muff Pi for leads #119885Muff DiverMemberThe only thing I’ve ever used with a Muff for a boost was a simple EQ pedal. Crank up the level and adjust the EQ and it really sweetens the Muff’s tone a lot. I use it before the Muff, though, not after. My Cry Baby comes after the Muff and I often put the Cry Baby into the half cocked position to give it that slightly strangled tone. Everyone has a different preference, but this has worked for me for about 40 years now.
