If you don’t like spending too much on the Freeze, you can buy Cathedral – it’s a fantastic reverb + a simple delay + you can do flanging with Flerb mode…And the infinite reverb is very good – it’s not that precise as on the Freeze because you always have reverb on, so it’s more like a frozen reverb, but with Flerb and reverse modes you can achieve really cool sounds…
As with the chorus on DXMB – well it can sound chorusy but it’s not the same…On delay pedals it should make the lo-fi sound of a tape echo…On the DXMB however you’ve got a lot of control with the modulation and you can get really crazy sounds – even synth like tones – out of it…
hello
i just recently purchased my first electro-harmonix product, the deluxe memory boy, and i just have some questions about it.
1)is the pedal supposed to have a used look to it? i bought it new but there are nicks and dents on the face of the pedal
2)the bypass foot switch seem to be a lot harder to step on than the tap foot switch, and also harder than my mxr pedal. this normal?
3)can it be powered by a 1 spot?
for the first question – I think it’s not, not the face – the sides and the back look a bit vintage on purpose though…
2) This is how it suppose to be…The tap switch should go easy in case you want to tap a very fast tempo whereas the bypass switch is hard to stomp so you can really feel when you engage the effect and because it bypasses the effect manually. But I agree with you, it’s kind of too much with the new pedals – Cathedral has it too – I like it better on my Memory man – it’s not that light, so I wouldn’t feel it engaging and not that hard either…
But I don’t see it as a problem…I’m stomping on the effects sometimes while playing and singing simoutaneously so I really need to feel that I’ve turned it on…The only problem occurs at home with bare feet…It hurts !
3) I wouldn’t do that if I were you…the sound is nothing when daisy-chained – weak and hissy
I am a huge fan of your pedals but please, please, please, if you intend to create a product like the stereo pulsar and the clone theory, polyphase (favorites of mine), please allow me to chain them in my stereo loop on my board for live play. I cant use your pedals live right now because I cannot preserve the integrity of my stereo loop when chaining your pedals together. Please, for the love of all that is holy, and unholy start creating stereo ins on all the pedals you have stereo outs on so I can fall back in love again.
It was discussed somewhere on this forum – if I’m not mistaken, you can’t have stereo ins with analog effects because it would need another (and exactly the same) circuit, so it would be like having another pedal just without the housing…You can try getting two of the pedals and fit them in one box – that’s the only way, I guess…But I really think the fun part is to put different effects in both paths, so you can do layered sounds, shimmers etc…
Never hesitate…I got mine in about two hours from the time when the ad appeared on the Internet…Half an hour for arranging and 90 minutes to get to the owner’s house…I didn’t hesitate that day and I got my DMM in perfect condition (I wish it had some scratches though, they look great on those pedals :metal: ) for 2500 CZK – that’s about 150 dollars…great, isn’t it ?
Be sure, that you’re using the adaptor packed with the DMB…But that’s usually just causing a hiss…Then when you say the lights are blinking…aren’t you in the tap divide sequencer mode? Just move the delay knob to get out of it (but it would play (weird stuff) anyway in the sequencer mode)…But that’s all I can think of – and if your DMB is broken then I’m really not good at fixing those things…
THX! I like ambient-style post-rock playing at home mostly, but with band you’ve got to put some riffs in too. So I use all the self oscillation and veeeeery long reverbs mainly for beginnings of the songs and for connecting songs together – infinite button on the Cathedral there is great because you can put in a flerb drone, while setting other effects for another song…I use delay and fuzz a lot (hardly any song without them) and combining analog delay and velcro-style fuzz on the FF is just killer! :metal:
I’m not changing the amp settings so much – I have the eq set the same all the time – for tone changes I use different pickups, and for overdrive I usually set the amp for crunch and then feed it with pickup booster – works great that way… :rawk:
And I’m really considering buying the Octave Multiplexer because many times I’m jamming just with my drummer and I usually tune the low E string to A so I can play octaves with a deep bass sound on the same fret hitting two strings – with the FuzzFactory it really sounds like distortion bass and a fuzzy guitar in unisono…The problem is that this tuning gives my strings a hard time a I don’t want to put a thicker E string just for this fun…But I’m really thinking about the Octave Multiplexer not only for this, but also for fattening and giving more bass ocassionaly to the sound….Is it possible? Can it be also used as a “Bassboost” ?
I know it might be too late for giving advice now, but I still own the Time Machine (it’s on the sale now as soon as I find the receipt) The Time Machine is a really good universal delay pedal, it introduced me to delay pedals and the delay instantly became my favourite effect. Out of all delays I tried this one was simple, universal and really good lookin’ ! And I wasn’t even digging Satch that much.
Now I can say, it’s no longer my cup of tea – it’s too Boss-like (not a chance of having your own modulation rate, tone and sound factory preset etc.)…But on the other hand it’s better sounding than Boss, Digitech and others…And I think, because delay is quite a complicated thing to use and get familliar with, it’s good to start with that one – look at me, now I have 2 delay pedals and want 3 of them! Maybe if I had started with Hazarai, I would’ve been unable to dial a “normal” sound and I would never buy a delay again…I was actually realy surprised when I got my first EHX pedal (Cathedral) with how the controls work differently – on Boss pedals you’ve got to put all the knobs at 12 o’clock to get something, EHX has it about 9 But now I think it’s great to have that extra space for weird sounds and every time I play through a Boss pedal I get bored – something is missing…
But I would go with Hazarai anyway – it looks and sounds really cool. Just be patient. With Time Machine you’ll be there faster and easier but you can eventually get bored…I think that’s not gonna happen with Haz…
Thanks for the name…well I somehow love orange color, so it came to mind while ago…I suppose it can become my stage name, although I’m not very fond of nicknames. But seeing that I’m from Czech Rep. and sing in English, I think a nickname is appropriate… :metal:
Well the biggest problem for me obviously is the money – I expect that the EHX 1SPOT type of adaptor would be cheaper solution than the expesive Brick and other plants…And I really need two of those…
And it really should fit any EHX pedal…(I mean the potential big one)
No, you’ll need an XLR cable with a jack connector on the other side – two of them in fact…But it sounds really awesome – especially hall and flerb modes…For singing in reverse it’s better to use Hazarai I guess – because it is what they call an intelligent reverse delay…Cathedral does sort of reverse swells only – but cool !
Cathedral is great also with piano – moreover, it has the digital delay as well so I don’t need another delay for piano…
I wouldn’t ditch the SMMw/H if I were you. Memory toy perhaps but DMB and SMMH are different animals. I think having both of them will cover up pretty much every feature one can get from the delay pedals. I don’t have Hazarai, but I really want it, so I can have three delays (also DMM), that can do virtually everything. DMB can’t do long delays (does them kind of lo-fi which is absolutely great hidden feature, but it isn’t if you want them clean), doesn’t have a looper or a multi tap (frankly even the first repeat hasn’t the same volume/clarity) and doesn’t have stereo capabilities.
Don’t get me wrong it’s my favourite pedal and the best experimental delay I’ve ever come across but it depends on what you’re expecting from the delay sound – for post-rock kind of sounds, reverb sounds, for atmospheric drones, for large soundscrapes and for weird experimental stuff – DXMB is great. But for clean repeats no.
Hi all !!! First post here…I’m so glad I made it at last – I made a deal with myself that I can join this forum as soon as I get the 3rd EHX pedal – and on Sunday I finally got my dream pedal – the Deluxe Memory man
So here is my current pedalboard: (based on the original Ikea Gorm pedalboard – but I would paint it orange (I love orange, you see) even if the original one was pink – so I’m not copying (that much):
Zvex FuzzFactory Clone (has the Union Jack paint job)–> Ibanez tuner–> Morley Wah/Volume–> Boss DS-2
–> Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster–> EHX Deluxe Memory boy–> AMP [Engl Thunder] and then all EHX FX loop –> EHX Deluxe Memory Man–> EHX Cathedral
Wishlist – SMMw/Hazarai {for multi tap, looper, reverse and sometimes longer digital delay is needed]
– Expression pedal for DMB [that’s actually first in the list]
– Small Stone – probably the vintage one.
– And something for layered sounds so probably Pulsar, Octave Multiplexer or Micro Pog, even
though I don’t like digital polyphonic octavers for it’s unnatural digital tone, it’s good
for layering…
– VOX AC30 to replace my ENGL – and maybe an Orange Tiny Terror as a second AMP (it doesn’t
have an FX loop, otherwise I would’ve already got it…
– Fender Jazzmaster – my dream guitar…
My favourites are Cathedral, DMB and FuzzFactory (it’s too soon for DMM although it dazzled me immediately). Cathedral is outstanding, I think it actually has no peers – predelay is fantastic, so is the infinite mode and I find Flerb the best feature…DMB is great and not only for it’s features, but the sound is also amazing – apart from “normal” delay usage (delay is my favourite effect – I use it nearly in every song) it can do synthy sounds and amazing self oscillation using the square wave modulation. And what should I say about FuzzFactory? Well it should’ve been EHX effect – it does have the same attributes – it has a great sound + it does some freaky out of this world sounds (I love the fizzy velcro fuzz)…I use DS-2 just for changing color of my AMP’s middle-based crunch tone and it’s my first pedal and an orange one, so I can never get rid of it. And the booster for pushing my amp and also for solos using FF or DS-2.
I’m so looking forward to playing more with the DMM – I bought it (appart from the fantastic sound, a need of two delay pedals and cooler looks) mainly because my DMB doesn’t have equally loud repeats as my dry signal and I didn’t want to put a booster in it’s FX loop – I like it as it is, just needed another delay that doesn’t have this problem…
I play mostly alternative rock inspirated by english bands (Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Muse) blended with a bit of post-rock, Jack White kind of fuzz licks and composition is inspired with classical music a lot I guess.
I also play piano (far longer than guitar) so here is my band setup: (ignore the mess )
