September 18, 2010 at 8:33 pm in reply to: Whats the deal with puting tubes in a guitar pedal? #111486Mr.GrimMember
i agree with Howard Davis, Julian, and many others in support for tube equipment.
amp wise, i must have tube, i have learned personally that i prefer the tone to tube amps after owning and testing over 100 different amps.
i recently sold off my Peavey 5150 head, and Mesa Boogie dual rectifier head. do to the fact that i don’t play out much any more and when i do there not huge venues.
i currently just use a 60W 1/12 tube combo that works very well for me, and if the show is bigger than i can mic it. check it out i like it very much (i also got it for $150. free shipping, and metal flight case on Ebay because no one els knew what it was, i should have payed over 3K for it  )
in my opinion its a Euro clone of a Boogie mark II C+

on the pedal side of tube use, i can go both ways, sum i think are gimmick and sum are really good.
i have not tried much, gimmick wise, i have a Behringer vintage tube distortion pedal that i think is crap.but i love my EHX tube Black Finger compressor!! best one Ive ever tried!!
and i love the sound of a Mesa Boogie rectifier distortion!! since i down graded and i no longer have that sound and tone in my combo, i had been searching for years for a pedal to compromise.
i finally found it with the Damage Control’s “Solid Metal” a dual tube based distortion pedal. (unfortunately they no longer make pedals, they now make pedals partnered with another company under the name Strymon)
Mr.GrimMemberi also have and use a Mole for guitar. i been wanting to make a demo for a year now (and others asked me) but i dont have any good recording equipment, thanks for the vid!
i also found it sounds best in specific places for guitar. i always use mine near my distortion to give my hard rock or metal rhythms more low end (almost like a Korn tone). i found that if it is after my distortion the sound turns to mud, but before works perfectly. but i get no glitchy effect out of mine, im sure that all depends on what pedals your using it with, and in your case it brings that out of your fuzz box.
Mr.GrimMemberthey slip on like normal knobs, but they are a very very tight fit, that they are attached using a press to get them on, so unfortunately they will be extremely hard to remove!
why not try sum type of slip over rubber cover, on the knob? like MXR does, or make sum thing, like maybe out of a small rubber ball? or wrap the knob in electrical tape or sum thing to make it bigger and more grip.
Mr.GrimMemberplus you may want to try your setup in another location, sum equipment like yours (and sum of mine in the past) pick up a hiss from other items near by. its catching electro magnetic interference from other items, like florescent lighting, heaters, washing machines, electric panel boxes, and many other items that have a rotating motor.
Mr.GrimMemberi see your running a compressor and many od/distortion pedals. i know its normal to use the compressor before OD/distortion, but once in a while you will find that a specific fuzz/OD/dist/boost just doesn’t like being after and actualy needs to be placed before the compressor.
in my case it was my Double Muff, it had a loud airy hiss all the time, and for a long while i thought thats was just the nature of the beast. but i found that it did not like being after my tube Black Finger compressor.
so this could be another thing for you to try out, remove your fuzz/OD/dist/boost pedals one at a time and see if thats the problem.
you problem could be one or more of many things, this is just one idea.
September 14, 2010 at 3:10 pm in reply to: Stereo Memory Man (w/ Hazarai) Bypass Switch Issue #111411Mr.GrimMembersounds like a bad switch, it happens once in a while. just take it to be replaced, or do it yourself as many of us do.
Mr.GrimMemberi dont know the details for sure, but i have always been sure its just an overdub of his voice on top of the origin in unison, and/or other band mates singing in unison, not an actual effect. that was the whole point of that song, was to show off there vocal chorus abilities.
Mr.GrimMemberi reported them as well last night, i did it on all 3 that were in different topics.
Mr.GrimMemberFYI for those new here….right click on the photo and select view pic (top option) it will let you see whe whole thing, for example “tape’s” last pic only shows half of the pic.
by the way “TAPE” what is the manufacturer name of the 5 pedals on your board with the similar artwork, one has an octopus on it??
Mr.GrimMember^^^^oh so we who waisted time on the nano clone do have a new use for it! we can mod it to be a nano vibrato and place it next to our new neo clone!
although i dont like modding a pedal if its the only one i have, nano clones are real cheap on ebay.
can you fill us in on that mod?!?!
Mr.GrimMembermy first guess would be that the power jack got knocked around, open it up (let it set for a whole day after its last time it was plugged in to be safe from voltage) and see if there is any broken solder connections near the power jack.
Mr.GrimMemberdo you have the part list for this schematic? im sure i got them all layin around, ill whip one together real quick and let you know!!
Mr.GrimMembersorry i cant help you out here, i do own this pedal, and have done sum repairs on it. but unfortunately the mega volume drop is normal for this unit, there are “mods” to fix it tho.
Mr.GrimMemberhay Julian, have you seen this?!?!
Mr.GrimMemberoohh!! a deluxe octave multiplexer?!?!
well ill be…..just when i think i know of all EH models….this is news to me!
