I have been agonizing for weeks about which fuzz pedal to get. One thing I discovered is that most of them are MAD expensive. I couldn’t find one cheaper than $150 (Fuzz Face RI, MXR, a few others). The rest of them were closer to $200 and more (mostly boutique). I liked the idea of a BM but was concerned about the fact that some people refer to it as a overdrive/distortion pedal. The Volume, Tone and Sustain knobs would imply that as well. I already have three ODs – OCD, Full Drive II & a Tube Screamer plus a compressor (Analog Man Bicomp). I didn’t want a duplicate of what I already had. Of course I was watching YouTube vids but this didn’t satisfy me. Finally I bit the bullet and bought a new BM. I got an incredible deal – 56 bucks! Well, suffice it to say, when I got the package yesterday, I brought it home and played all night! All my worry was for naught. This thing is about fuzzy as I could want. Who cares what the knobs say? For the record, mine is not noisy at all. And when I run the OCD in front of it, the roar is completely over the top!
Sorry to blather on. By the way, here is a great demo comparing the “Ram’s Head” BM to a current version. The vintage pedal blows the current one away. But, not having a vintage Muff to compare mine to, I’m very happy with my new pedal. This clip is by gearmanndude who makes the best pedal demos on YouTube (along with Proguitarshop.com).
modalmoodMemberThanks for all your advice. I’ve been having second thoughts about bidding on this item given your feedback. My top bid was $55 and I was outbid moments ago (probably by one of you guys – HA!) I’m sure it’s going to go over $100. Probably over $200. But I became squeamish notwithstanding EH Man’s offer to fix it. (Thnaks EHM.)
You guys rock. By the way, any preference between a new big Big Muff Pi and the Little Big Muff Pi?
modalmoodMemberI know, that sounds wierd doesn’t it?
modalmoodMemberThanks. I will definitely keep this in mind if I am the winner.

Sorry for cluttering up the board.
modalmoodMemberI’ve owned a Memory Boy for about three weeks. Don’t get me wrong. I dig it. Especially the weird square wave effects. But I tried a Memory Man (XO) at Guitar Center the other day and, well, the repeats seemed much more distinct. And the whole presentation was cleaner. And it has that gain control that adds a little tape-like overdrive to the sound when you’re really ripping Edge style. It was very appealing to me. Of course you lose the square wave with the Memory Man. And the Man is three times more expensive. Anyway I’m thinking of trading in the Boy for a full fledged DMM.
One other thing. Has anyone compared the old school sheet metal Memory Man with the new die-cast version (XO)? Is there a consensus?

modalmoodMemberMore on my MB. It is sublime. SO much more versatile than the Carbon Copy. And 50 bucks cheaper!! By the way, the only difference that I can detect between the MB and the EHX Memory Man is the Gain dial which seems to allow you to drive the pedal (MM) to overload (and light up an LED). This slight distortion can be heard on a lot of U2’s stuff. It is well documented that The Edge is a big fan of the Memory Man. He can be seen using it in the movie “It Could Get Loud”. Check out this video for a demo of what I’m talking about.

Does anyone else agree with me regarding the MM vs the MB?

modalmoodMemberI discovered something about my Memory Boy the other night. I was using it with a battery and, among other malfunctions I found I couldn’t get any repeats after about 2 o’clock on the Delay knob. Well, maybe one repeat but VERY low-fi. Too much so to be useful. I then removed the battery and plugged it into the wall with the power supply that came with the unit and viola! Perfect (but nice and low-fi) repeats all the way up on the Delay knob. I’d say the box works much better plugged in than with the battery and IMHO is how it should be used. For what it is worth.
modalmoodMemberQuote:What’s up guys I was just wondering if there’s any difference between the 2 except for the size. Do they use the same chip? I searched but couldn’t find any info on the subject. The XO’s are a good more pricey than the others. Thanks.I was wondering the exact same thing. Are they going to stop making DMM XO when they run out of chips? Also, is there a significant difference in sound between the old sheet metal DMM and the new die cast XO?

Oh at the input. sorry. no i didn’t. i used the same cables i always use with a myriad of stomp boxes.

modalmoodMemberQuote:Quote:I have seen several references to “ducking” in these forums when talking about the Memory Boy (and/or delay pedals in general). Can someone enlighten me as to what this means? Thanks very much.Ducking refers to when playing a delay pedal, as your real time notes are played, the delayed notes sort of “duck” under the real notes….they come out slightly quieter so that the whole sound doesnt get too muddy. Some people/manufacturers call this dynamic delay as well,
Awesome. Thanks for the quick reply.
