Every one I have seen is missing the OFF, so yours would be the first. Good to know.

That’s all right. Someone mentioned on another forum a while back that they had a “reverse logo” Muff. I asked that person (probably someone who is one here too) what a “reverse logo” was, forgetting that is what I referred to that particular color combination as on my own website. I think that term has been used for quite a few years.

Sovtek Red Army Overdrive and EHX Axis Fuzz

if you know where I can find one, it will be awesome!

I’ve got both. $1500 each OK?

    That’s just mean :)

Put an automatic watch so ebay searches and notifies you when they show up, and watch the gear forum and other places to see if anyone puts one up. I see one or two of each every year. I found two Red Army Overdrives last year, one on ebay and one on the Gear Page. Only two Axis pedals were on ebay last year. People do let them go, but they are getting rarer.

I second the request for a gut shot of the Mogwai. I would love to see gut shots of your purple and Blue Ram’s Head Muffs too. Not many people have them and even fewer post pics of the component sides of the board.

Nice find. It took me several years of trading back and forth on ebay to find a tall font green that I liked. Most were really dull and lifeless sounding. They are amongst the coolest looking of the Sovteks. I don’t think there is a meaner looking pedal. I have two, but the paint is in awful condition on mine. Yours looks intact. For some reason the early green Muffs have the most problem with the paint flaking off.

Thanks for the replies. To be frank, I’m not finding too much love for this version of the Muff. I don’t think this is Fran’s best work.

The tone is in the same family as the version 6 Big Muff, though this is not actually a reissue of that version. It is a bit more muffled (muffier?), and buzzy-fizzy sounding, without the clarity of most of the vintage USA Muffs. Mids are very scooped. The bottom end of the tone differs from vintage USA made Muffs from the 1970s. It does not react as sharply to pinch harmonics as the V3 Muff and does not work well with palm muting.

This description is it in a nut shell. I decided to seek out the “vintage” tone mentioned in the description above.

I looked around for various Muff circuits on General Guitar Gadgets etc. I built up their version on a prototype board, I used common as muck 2N3904 transistors and the thing buried the V9. I am most disappointed, I thought EHX has been building these things for so long they must have it down to a fine art by now. Not so.

I dare say it is time to pull out the soldering iron. :(

I wouldn’t say don’t buy a Muff pedal, but don’t make an eBay purchase, hear it first.

It all depends on what kind of sounds you are looking for out of a Muff and what kind of music you like to play. Honestly, I did not care for the V9 that much when I got it. I was used to Sovtek Muffs and thought they performed much better for what I like to play, but the V9 grew on me over time. Some people love the V9 Muffs and dislike the older ones. Try a vintage V2 or V3 Muff, or a vintage Muff clone if the current one does not suit you and you want more clarity to the tone. Stomp Under Foot makes some decent vintage USA clones.

Mouser Electronics and a few other companies sell them in small quantities. I think Mouser has the whole Davies line on their website. That’s where I get my V3 replacement knobs (#1470). They have a model 1510 that looks similar to the black V1 knobs, but theu are only about half the size.

The knobs on your right Muff look similar to these.

I have two V1 Muffs with them and I have seen several other V1 Muffs and a three knob Foxey Lady with these exact knobs, so I assume they were production.

I have never seen the ones in the middle. I think those are replacements. The silver knobs in the top right photo don’t look original either. The knobs in the bottom right photo I believe are original as I have seen several V1 Muffs with them, and obviously the black knobs are original Daka-Ware.

I have searched and searched, but I have found nothing like these available from any suppliers. Occasionally there is a guy who sells knobs similar to the V1 silver knobs on ebay. They are very close in looks to the original knobs.

Davies Moulding makes several that fit, but none that look like any of the original V1 knobs.

Kit, is that a PNP muff? w. 2N5087s? Looks like they’re in the board the wrong way round for a regular NPN muff. That’s a pretty rare bird if it is…
    Gold legs?

I don’t know. The person who emailed those to me was trying to find out what he had, but he did not say what transistors were in it. V3s were made with both PNP and NPN tranys. I have two V2 Muffs with 2N5087 tranys facing the other way like this, so I assume that is what these are, though I have never owned a V3 with those. It’s likely they were used on V3s since they were on V2s though.

OK, I dug into a few of them. Here is an extract from Siva. Guitars in the left channel are different from the right. You can hear the Big Muff in the rhythm parts, but it sounds like there are several other fuzz tracks going on too, and I remember Billy or Butch saying there were multiple fuzz pedals and/or amps for this song.

Here are a few Excerpts of the Muff guitar tracks from Today. Again, guitars in left and right channels are different tracks.

I have not dug into Zero yet.

I don’t think anyone has cracked the new encoding, but there were several Pumpkins songs from previous mogg vorbis rips rips on the web. Most of those links are dead now. Siva, Today, and several other songs had been ripped. If you find any active links for those multi tracks, let me know. I would love to make some good backing tracks out of them and isolate the guitar parts.

EDIT – I just found the Zero, Today, and Siva Moggs. I just need to make some mp3 clips in Audacity now.

I pulled them from the Mogg files for Rock Band, which had the instruments isolated. That’s how I made the backing track I used.

I messed some more with my amp settings, dropping the mids way down, upping the bass, and turned the tone on the V4 down to about 9:00. I don’t think you can get any closer to the sound I hear in those SD tracks than this.

It sounds great when I record it, but it is really hard to hear myself play at these settings with a BT or band playing. The V3 does not sound this good, but at least you can hear yourself play better. I understand why Billy stopped using this Muff live now.

That V4 sounded really great there. The V3 sounded a bit too ‘pleasent’ to my ears.

The V4 definitely sounds closer to Siamese Dream. That flat crushed fuzz is very unique to those op-amps. Not exactly the same tone as I hear on the record, but I’m not using the same mics, preamp, cabinet, or any EQ or compression in the mix. Here are Billy’s actual guitar tracks from Cherub Rock.

Still, the transistor V3 tone works great too!

For comparison, here is the V3 using a Cherub Rock Mogg backing track. I layered several tracks with a Strat and Les Paul into a JCM800. I used a Sure SM57 mic into GarageBand. Excuse my sloppy playing.

Here is the same but with the V4.
