Kevin DemuthMemberQuote:So I just got an Electro Harmonix Germanium OD pedal for Christmas. I set it up by itself, not strung up with any other pedals and turn everything on. When I hit the footswitch and turn the pedal on, I get the strangest noise coming out of my amp: talk radio?!? Essentially, whenever I activate my pedal, it somehow picks up a radio wave (I’m assuming, I don’t know about these kinds of things…) and plays radio through my amp. Any suggestions?
some pedals can do this. i don’t really know why…
are you using a battery or power supply?
i only ask because mine introduces a high-pitched (but quite low level) whine but ONLY when it’s daisy chained with certain pedals. if i use it in a different chain of pedals or with a dedicated power supply or battery, it’s quiet.
Kevin DemuthMembersomeone once described my music as ‘sadcore’…
Kevin DemuthMemberQuote:Overdrive is really not my favorite effect, and I’m picking up a cheap Behringer. I’m also turning to Behringer for reverb, the DR100 is amazing for $29. The Pulsar is kind of cool, but I’d like to find something a tad more versatile. Of all of the pedals under the Chorus/Phase/Flange, what do you recommend?my favourite chorus pedal is the Small Clone. even though it’s not the most tweakable pedal, the two depth presets are well chosen and it has a wide range for the rate.
the only other chorus pedal that i’ve tried that i like is an old Yamaha pedal i have.
i’d love to try a Polychorus one day.i’ve got two phasers which i really like: a Small Stone RI and an old orange Ross Phaser. i’ve had other more expensive ’boutique’ pedals but i didn’t like them very much.
to be honest though, when it comes to chorus (or chorus-y effects) and flanging – both effects which i don’t use that often – i find myself using the Haz or my old Digitech RDS-1000 (rack delay with modulation).
are you only interested in pedals?
Kevin DemuthMemberQuote:The pulsar is versatile, it does vintage trem to full on square wave chop to ring mod. Its great!:thumb: when i think Pulsar, i think versatile… but… i think he wants something other than tremolo.
Kevin DemuthMemberQuote:So, for the purposes of this thread, assume I have the exact same tastes in pedals as you.
Except for overdrive. I know what’s going on for that.which overdrive are you going for?
personally, for delay and modulation i’d be very VERY happy with just a Hazarai and Pulsar (big-box or Stereo XO version).
my current (main) pedal board (which i use for guitar, keyboards and sometimes other instruments) has:
(Korg tuner)
‘You Dirty’ Rat
EHX Germanium OD
EHX Stereo Memory Man w/Haz
EHX Pulsar
Boss DM-3 Delayi’ve got another board of extras and several other spare effects but those are my essentials.
sometimes i switch the Pulsar for another tremolo but with the Pulsar, Haz and DM-3 i can cover a lot of ground.Kevin DemuthMemberQuote:alright, here’s an important question. Is it better to have one or two amazing effects and several crap ones, (Hazarai, Freq Analyzer, Behringer OD, Dano Flanger & Phaser), or four or five good ones (#1, Holy Grail, Tube Zipper, Worm)? If I do take two good ones and some bad ones, which would you recommend? Also, I’ve been considering building some BYOCs. If I do that, which one or two would you recommend, bearing n mind I have little electronics experience?“Is it better to have one or two amazing effects and several crap ones, or four or five good ones?”
here’s my not entirely helpful answer: it’s best to have effects that you like.
if you get a cheap pedal (Dano or whatever) that you like, then it deserves its place in your set-up. you can spend big money on something else which turns out to be disappointing.as for the BYOC question, the easiest ones are going to be the dirt pedals (inc. boost) and tremolo. most of the others will have higher component counts – which doesn’t necessarily make them more difficult builds. the most challenging part is usually the wiring, so the more switches and pots there are the higher the level of difficulty.
Kevin DemuthMemberQuote:The Germanium OD has really crept up on everyone. I believe it’s going to be one of EHX’s most overlooked but classic boxes.you could be right! :thumb:
i have to admit, i ignored it for a long time… when it came out i watched a demo (where they showed the extreme, low voltage settings) and thought that was all it did! it was only a couple of weeks ago that i dug a little deeper and discovered that it did a lot more.
Kevin DemuthMemberQuote:The only ring mod I canfind is the $400 Moog one. And there’s no way I’m going to blow money on that. As for flangers, chorus, etc, I’m going to go with some cheap Danos. (Don’t kill me!)
A bit of an update: Instead of a Hazarai, I’m going with a #1. Does what I need for a much better price. The Worm will have to wait a bit as well, but the other two are definately both remaining on my list. Thanks!i’d reconsider about the Haz if i were you… it’s an amazing pedal. i’m sure you could find yourself using the reverse delay, modulation and looping etc which the #1 doesn’t have.
also, check out a Pulsar (or Stereo Pulsar); it’s a great tremolo and can also go a bit further than a standard effect – the rhythmic thing it does when you turn the depth past maximum is beautiful and it can also get into ring mod territory.
Kevin DemuthMemberQuote:I really like the taper of the gain knob. I haven’t used this pedal playing out yet, but at home, I really like it. I find that some pedal’s volume are quiet, then LOUD. This pedal has a smooth volume increase.i got mine today and i noticed that too.
i’ve only had a quick play so far but !
even the clean settings are great; there’s a bit of compression and it sounds really pretty.
the more extreme sounds are easy to find too… i had a short loop going on the Haz and ran it through the Germanium OD and played with the controls; using the Bias and Volts you can dial in some subtle breakup around the edges, a little fuzzy texture all the way to retro garage sounds.
i still need to try it with my other dirt pedals but so far, i love it! :rawk:
Kevin DemuthMemberthat’s really cool! :thumb: :rawk:
i wouldn’t mind having something like that actually!
December 19, 2008 at 7:53 pm in reply to: order all the EHX pedals you’ve owned from favorite to least favorite #89182Kevin DemuthMember1. Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai
2. Pulsar
3. Micro Pog
4. Little Big Muff
5. NYC Big Muff
6. Small Stone
7. Small Clone
8. Deluxe Memory Man
9. Stereo Electric Mistress
10. LPB-1
11. Bass Balls (NYC)the only one i didn’t like was the Bass Balls.
also, i’ve got a Germanium OD on the way which i have high hopes for.
Kevin DemuthMemberi’ve just ordered myself a Germanium OD – it should be delivered on monday; i can’t wait!
also, they used to be really expensive over here (UK) – over £100 – so i’m delighted that i’ve bought a brand new one for £66.
Kevin DemuthMemberQuote:I’ve wanted to try the Guv’nor for ages. What are they similar to in terms of gain and tone?it has the trademark, classic Marshall distortion sound… i don’t know how else to describe it.
by modern standards I’d say it has a moderate amount of gain – a little less gain than a Rat for example.
the three EQ controls and range of gain make it quite versatile in theory but i found that i only liked the pedal in one setting… which was with the gain at maximum for an all out rock sound. :rawk:the EQ – the treble in particular – is interactive with the gain; i found that the higher you have the gain, the less treble you need and vice versa.
if i remember correctly, it is quite dynamic – even at max gain – and responsive.Kevin DemuthMemberQuote:The Blues Breaker is an awesome overdrive. I use it mostly to boost the signal going into the Muff’n. If I am playing just blues, The Blues Breaker and the Surf Trem are hard to beat, especially through my Classic 30.Dave
thanks Dave. :thumb:
i’m quite tempted to get one. i used to have a Guv’nor (the original one) which i liked a lot.
Kevin DemuthMemberQuote:This is my current set up.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/davesnyder/Gear/Pedalboard121508-1.jpg
EHX pedals that I’ve parted with:
Nano Muff – I think I want the LPB-1
The Worm – just too noiseyWish list:
#1 Echo
LPB-1
MI Audio Crunch BoxFWIW – The mic in the pic is an Electro-Voice 664 single vent. It’s a ROCKIN’ mic.
i like it! :thumb:
what do you think of the Bluesbreaker?
Quote:personally I’d go for the SMMH over the number one echo, it’s just so much more versatile, even for just simple echos because of the decay and filter controls. And it isn’t that much bigger really.i’d agree with that…
the Haz is an incredible pedal. i’m not usually into ‘effect-y’ effects and put off trying one for ages – i’m so glad i finally gave in and bought one; it’s become one of my most used pedals and now i wouldn’t be without it. -
