I get so much crap for liking Steely Dan and I can’t figure out why. I own 800+ albums and ONE of them is a Steely Dan best of, that seems to be the one that people latch onto. Someone will be looking at my shelves:

“Oh neat, you’ve got some really good taste! I’ve never met anyone who likes such different styles of… Oh, you like Steely Dan?”

    Every single time.

Jon Stewart makes me laugh sometimes, but I hate how he yells all the time – it gets pretty obnoxious…

I know Zack Vex cites Mike & Co.’s Big Muff when justifying the name of the Super Hard On… Look what you guys started!

I’ve always liked the Small Clone one best, I’ve always thought it was super clever but at the same time it’s basically one step away from saying “Your Cobain.” If there was a slogan on the Polychorus, I can only imagine it would read “Your Radio Friendly Unit Shifter” or “Your Crimson King.” Actually those sound pretty neat, if you ever do up an XO Polychorus they may be worth tossing around the office.

I’ve always wondered the psychology behind saying ‘your’ on every slogan, though – is this a deliberate marketing attempt, made to stimulate a person’s sense of ownership and belonging? Or is it just something you started doing when you moved away from pine boxes so that your pedal packaging could retain some of that charm? I’ve always been curious, it makes it harder to part with pedals because I think “Wait a second… I’m about to trade in a little piece of my Pi!” or something similar. “I can’t ditch this box, it’s got my prescription in it!”

EDIT: Hold up. The Doctor Q is my favorite: “Your prescription enclosed.”

Let’s also add “stereotypical teenaged purist rants” to the list?

No it’s okay, I’m a joyless cynic and nothing really bothers me anymore.

Minor Administrative Babble: Aside from the possibility of an underdeveloped vocabulary, I can’t determine any real reason for the cursing in your list. I hate to sound a prude, and I’m not about to make a big deal over it, but I think I speak for everyone when I say ‘please try to keep needless obscenities to a minimum.’

Just a thought for the future.

I’m usually of the opinion that nobody can tell once the effect is in a mix. NOBODY, or at least hardly anybody, so you’re likely the only one who will ever care whether a good-sounding pedal is digital or analog.

I’ve also learned a few things from EHX and Boss… Digital is awesome. If done properly, digital pedals can sound absolutely fantastic – in Boss’ case, just like analog but without the size, price and maintenance hassle, or in the case of EHX, totally unique.

EDIT: I forgot to specify that not ALL Boss digital effects are great, but I find most of them are pretty good at the very least.

I got my long awaited POG! And a $100 gift card to my favorite local record store (graywhale). And some other shit that isn’t as cool.

what kind of music do you listen to?

Beck (probably my favorite artist, and biggest influence)

    Yes!

Beck, Ween and the Flaming Lips are my musical trinity (although my tastes extend far beyond them). Also, The Melvins and The Beatles need space in there too, but I can’t give a top three if I have five favorite acts right?

My Christmas this year was pretty exciting: new drum heads! Tops and bottoms for my snare and both toms (five of the thick Remo Emperor heads and a thinner resonant head for my snare drum, so my drums are super Ringo-Style). My only complaint is that these toms are super dead sounding and my snare is really dry, so the Flanger Hoax is only really noticeable on my cymbals. However, the trade off is that the drums sound way way better through distortion.

I remember hearing about that 666 thing; I forget the exact logic behind it, but I know they convinced me. I must admit that the story seemed 10x less interesting about ten seconds after I posted it… but whatever, rock + roll.

On a side note: The Box of Metal… Don’t get me wrong, it sounds good, but the cost : sound quality ratio is horrendously imbalanced, even in the Vexter version. Had I paid full price or traded in pedals I still like for it, I would be super super bummed out. However, if you’re working off of trades or gift certificates or something, it’s worth checking out. The gate control is a great addition for us single coil users, and it makes a great fuzz because it can sit anywhere in the chain. I also must admit I just like having it on my board – especially in my non-metal band. Any pedal with bloody graphics deserves some space, right?

Also worth mentioning: They didn’t have any Metal Muffs at the store I checked out, but going off of the Dan Miller demo, the boxes sound mighty similar…

Sustain pedal as in a compressor? It will totally mess with your cymbals, I love it and if you’re in a noise band you probably will too. Mild compression sounds really nice, but heavy compression sounds really weird – it makes your drums sustain longer, but as soon as they decay below the compressor’s threshold it’s a sudden drop. It’s worth checking out, but make sure that you buy it from somewhere with a return policy. Just in case. The Soul Preacher is rock solid and sounds really cool, but the MXR Dynacomp has this weird tremolo effect at maximum compression (not intended) that may suit a noise band nicely. A tracking sustainer such as the Boss DF-2 doesn’t know what to with the signal; cool effects can be had but it’s super unpredictable and requires way more concentration than it’s worth. I haven’t tried the freeze modes on the HOG yet, that may be interesting…

Have you ever looked into ring modulation?

I would suggest something else for ONE reason: You have to keep your toe on the loop button. I’ve had amazing results with the 16 Second Digital Delay, which even has a built in click track and automatic loop cutoff. Also, you can add flange/vibrato to the loop after you record it, and the Continuous mode allows you to stack loops despite only hitting record the first time; it’s awesome. Think about the introduction of ‘Run Fay Run’ by Isaac Hayes and you’ve got an idea of how the Continuous mode behaves.

I guess if you’re playing open hats or on the ride it won’t make much of a difference (I control pedals with my left foot), but I tried the Haz on my kit and I was unsatisfied. However, the delay sounds great and the flange setting is really cool too. As for the reverse… wow. Basically, the Hazarai is great on drums for everything except looping.

The Black Finger isn’t much of a compressor in the traditional sense, it’s more of a tonal augmentation. It smooths your playing out and warms it up without squashing it – even in squash mode. If I was stuck with one pedal for the rest of my life, it would be a toss up between this and a looper.

That having been said, don’t trade in all of your pedals until you’ve locked them up in a room for a month to see how you can fare without them. The Black Finger is NOT an effect, you are essentially going to be playing with nothing in your chain except for a subtle studio compressor. It’s a big step, what kind of amp are you using?

The Blue Box was my first ever pedal, it’s A-M-A-ZING.

As for betraying EHX… they understand musicians, I’m sure you’ll be forgiven soon enough. Besides, it’s odd when you’re trying to put together a board and all of the effects you own look exactly the same; I prefer to mix it up. Mind you, EHX has enough different casings that an all EHX board isn’t necessarily going to look uniform. I like that about EHX – these ‘all BOSS boards’ or ‘all MXR boards’ are so dull looking.

I have to stick up for Boss a little bit, lots of their effects are getting better. Case in point: The Bassman/Deluxe Reverb pedals, and the Space Echo. I’m not saying that they’re convincing replicas, all I’m saying is that I was pleasantly surprised at how good these pedals sounded.

I just read 3 graphic novels by Alan Moore: The Watchmen, Killing Joke and From Hell. The Watchmen is absolutely fantastic but I wish I would have read it before the movie was announced.Regardless, the book boasts incredible prominence despite being published over 20 years ago. It’s funny how little things change…

The Killing Joke is neat but it needed to have been about three times as long; I’m all for succinctness but the story needs more development than what it was given. Mental anguish needs more than a half hour to cause insanity. However, since I was three I’ve been a huge junkie for any Joker plot so I still loved it from start to finish. Moore is the master of cliffhanger endings, so his novels stick with you long after you’ve finished them. That’s more than I can say about any traditional novels I’ve read recently.

From Hell is… well, it’s dark. I jumped the gun when I said I’ve read three,I’m actually still reading this one.

As for books without pictures, I still need some time off… this stupid English major has turned reading into a chore. I recently read Slouching Towards Nirvana by Charles Bukowski and loved it but that’s contemporary poetry so it doesn’t count.

    I like this thread.

    Matching headstock!!! I love it.

Use red loc-tite or something similar to keep the screws from moving, get them where you want them then dab it on with a toothpick. They’ll never move again, so make sure that you have everything set up properly before you glue it! I had my action set too high and I can’t lower it without dabbing everything with nail polish remover.

What gauge string do you use and are you attached to it? I solved literally 100% of the typical Jazzmaster problems with .012-.052 strings and loc-tite.

I know I’m a bit of a purist, but I have to say: the Buzzstop removes almost all of the resonance behind the bridge, killing alot of the Jazzmaster sound. It’s a perfectly fine solution if you’re after a guitar to play and you want to use lighter strings, but I advise against it if you’re after that ‘Jazzmaster sound.’ There’s alot to be said for that string behind the bridge.

    Like I said, a bit of a purist…
