If you look inside the old LPB1 it uses just one transistor, it is not really a distortion pedal. It’s a basic preamp that puts out a clean signal. But when you turn it up it will hit your amps preamp pretty hard and caused it to distort. I have been playing for 35+ years. 2 months ago I started using a BBE Sonic Stomp Box. I am now addicted to it, if you every try one you will be hooked for life. Along with a good distortion pedal, I use a 78 Deluxe Big Muff PI,or a Boss MD-2 it is a must. The info that comes with it says it time aligns the bass and the treble allowing both to hit your ear at the same time. It has 2 knobs one for LO Contour and one for Process. It makes any guitar sound better. Even if you think your guitar sounds great a BBE will make it sound much better. After a Big Muff or distortion pedal of your choice, buy a BBE sonic maximizer. You can get one for $99. You have got to try one. If anyone uses or try’s one please Post and tell us about it!

I just finished changing out the chips in my deluxe big muff pi. Mine is the 78 version with RC4558NB chips. I had some 741 chips laying around that I was going to use just because I had them. I checked the data sheets for the 741 I had, there several brands on the market. It is good I checked them because the pin outs on my 741 chips were slightly different from the 4558’s and they would not have worked in my big muff……I ended up buying some JRC4558D’s from ebay, 4 for less than $3, these are the chips everyone raves about for the TS808 Mod. I changed out 4 chips, I changed the compressor chips also. To make a long story shorter, they work and sound great. I think they sound better than the stock units. So check the data sheets before changing any chip. The reason I changed them in the first place is because the original ones had failed.

Those came out back in the mid 90’s. I remember seeing them in the catalogs but I’m unsure if there were any actual specs listed other than wattage/ohms. I’ll try to check tonight.

I also have a 4-10 and a 4-12, both still in their boxes.

I have never seen one of these before. Did you purchase them new? How much did they sell for new? I don’t suppose they are for sale are they?

I fixed the Deluxe Big Muff PI This unit was made in 1978. It was one of the 4558 IC Chips just as I had suspected. I decided to replace all 4 of the 4558 IC Chips with the famous JRC4558 used in the TS-808 mods. All of the IC’s are soldered in as opposed to the kind that use sockets that the IC’s just plug into. So this is not a mod for inexperienced to try. I was trained by the US Navy and the Air Force on soldering. It could be very easy to over heat a IC chip by leaving the soldering iron on it for to long. I found 2 legs on one of the origanal chips shorted out to each other. I think this is what caused the failure in the first place. It’s hard to beleive that it came from the factory this way, but it did. The Big Muff failed way back in the early 90’s, I put up for years before pulling it out and trying to fix it. I never realy liked the sound of the unit until now. It sounds killer with the new chips installed.

Thanks for the info. I went to the site and found the schematic that I needed listed. He has a good many differant ones available. It cost 5 bucks and he emailed it to me. Very fast service. He also fixes effects and is back logged for 2 months. I would recomend it any needing effects schematics. Not just EHX but many different kinds. He also has amp schematics. Thanks for the reply and the info. I will post what I find wrong with my Deluxe Big Muff 78 blend sw. model, in case any one else is having the same problem. My fuzz stopped fuzzing all though you could still hear the tone section working. But the fuzz volume and fuzz sustain quite working. It seems that the compresser is still working.
