freshchopsMemberQuote:I can get the Lofi Loop Junky sound with a little bit of dark overdrive + clone theory
Sounds like a righteous cause for a recording sample? Did you have any samples along those lines on your clips page? Thanks!
freshchopsMemberThe “ZVex Low-Fi Loop Junky” achieves this but on a play-back signal. Check it out:

It alone seems like a brilliant pedal, but it would be interesting if the same technology could be applied to the live signal.
That pedal, BTW, is on top of my want list at the moment.July 22, 2009 at 6:19 am in reply to: I did some more HOG demos, at Ghost’s request. Some SMMH action as well. #99825freshchopsMemberAWESOME!!!! The Sitar sounds are fantastic! How do you get the sustained lines (organ’ish sounding)? Continuous strumming, through the pedal or what?

freshchopsMemberI think I’m still learning to love music… or my appreciation (/addiction) keeps growing.
I can’t pinpoint a magic moment, but think I’ve always paid more attention to the music in everything than my peers. It probably started with film scores, theme songs, and all to even childs shows and cartoons. Then video games.
The first time I remember REALLY being captivated by music was when I bought my first cassette. It was the B52’s “Cosmic Thing”. I must have been about 10. Later I found an old toy keyboard at my grandmothers house and started to see how cool to discover chords and melodies was. From there I managed to always have some form of instrument around as an outlet, but as I get older, I realize that my draw to music is more of a creativity outlet…. If I wasn’t playing instruments, I’d undoubtedly be doing something creative. It wasn’t until later on, following a stint of mind altering substances, that I had a whole new appreciation for music…. of all types.
It’s funny that nnekolas mentioned video games. I have some epic memories of vide game music. Some of my favs are the classics like: Castle Vania, Zelda, Contra; Super Mario and all, legendary music. But a few of my all time favorites were:
Rygar – NES: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNrzw8wKjkQ
Goonies 2 – NES: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIip6uZ28tE (which is just that Cyndy Lauper song from the Goonies movie, but well done)
… but that’s a whole other topic. Game Music converse could go on forever.
freshchopsMemberI can’t add much more than “ghost” has already pointed out…. but seriously, in your position, I wouldn’t consider anything other current loopers out there. I did all my homework and comparisons. I couldn’t be happier with the 2880. It is arranged very much like a multi-track recorder, like the old Tascam 4-track PortaStudios…. and this is a good thing.
Layout and features are subject to your taste and needs, so you’ll have to compare those. What it comes down to is quality and tone. The 2880 sounds really great. I tried to sample all loopers before buying and without a doubt, the 2880 kills all others in tone quality. It’s really so much more than that, but the most of my opinions are personal taste so I’ll spare. The only feature that I can imagine missed is an “undo” option, but is workable.
The only possible better option I can imagine would be running Ableton Live on a laptop, and that’s not going to come cheaper.
Personally, I get the most out of the 2880 for the instant ability to dub melodies. It not only helps songs progress quicker, but allows for accompanying melodies to come about that might not have otherwise happened with the convenience of looping concepts over each other. So for me it’s about a 99% creative tool and about a 1% sample looper…. Although it’s got a completely intuitive live layout.
As far as the foot controller, I would really recommend it, and wouldn’t let the extra cost discourage you. Start with the 2880, see what you think, you can always buy one later. I think you’d want one though. If you’re looping not so much on the fly, you can set to record quantized which gives you a 4-count before recording the initial loop…… then accompanying loops can come in later, although you can complete a loop having the 2880 automatically jump to recording on track 2. I throw the looper up on a sturdy musical stand (ya’ know for sheet music)… it can be right in your face – spare your back.
I’d add. I haven’t compared to an Akai headrush, so can’t a/b. I would replace the 2880 first if I lost all of my gear…. FIRST! I’m actually planning to get another one once I get ahead on some other things. I can easily say that I feel I got about 10x better playing when I started playing through the looper because of it’s aid in creativity…. and like ghost said, it’s VERY intuitively laid out. Everything is right where you’d want. there’s no ignorant compromises and layers of controls buried in a teeny LCD screen. The 2880 has a very sexy blend of vintage analog feel with modern quality… just PERFECT. EHX has it’s handful of iconic pedals and boxes, and to me, this one belongs up there with Memory Man, Big Muff and Holy Grail ……
Oh, and if you’re shopping around, you can do the Musicians Friend thing considering they usually always have a coupon discount going on. They have one now…. you can google search Musicians Friend Coupon or here’s a link their current ($65 off more than $350, almost pays for a footswitch):

freshchopsMemberQuote:Greetings.Regarding the gold-pin tubes: is there any advantage sonically? Has anyone A-B’ed the gold pin version and a non-gold pin version of the same tube type? If so, what were your findings?
TIA,
-0.9Welcome, I can’t say for sure because I haven’t A/B’ed them myself. All assurances of noticeable improvements with the Gold-Pin’s to me have come from dealers, and venders that’s questionable.
My instincts would tell me that if you’ve got a little extra cash, it would be worth it to try gold-pins. I have noticed improved tone in other gold-plated connectors (cables / adapters). This is only my opinion, but If for nothing else, I’d recommend the gold-pins for their potential to be less subject to oxidation…. obviously a better pay-off over a longer life of the tubes….. if they can resist oxidation more than uncoated.
freshchopsMember[sigh] I hate these ’cause they only depress me……. but in no particular order:
– EHX Stereo Memory Man w/ Hazarai
– EHX Voice Box
– EHX New Deluxe Memory Man (small body)
– EHX Holiest Grail
– ZVex Wooly Mammoth
– ZVex Lo-Fi Loop Junky….. see, just a couple grand later, I’d be a happy guy!
freshchopsMemberQuote:Does anyone have any tips for the timing? I’m using it with the pedal and I just can’t quite get my loops to start and end properly. Should I be hitting the button right before ending? Right before beginning? Right on time? Any tips? It’s a skill in itself to work out the start / stop, footswitch or not…..
The solution for this would be to create “Quantized” loops. If you didn’t know, or haven’t tried yet, you would engage the “Quantize” button before starting a Record on a New Loop. This will keep your loops confined to a precise set of the 4/4 click….. oh, yeah, you’ll have to play to the click. So, the click is on a 4/4 measure (1 set = 4 clicks) and when recording it will start right at the beginning of a set and stop at the end of the last 4/4 measure that is playing when you click again to stop.
Another note with that, is that when you start recording a new loop with the “Quantize” active, it doesn’t actually start recording until the second set of measures starts. It’s like a count-off before starting….. so you can be precise with your starting…. NEET’O! That’s that, and that’s if you’re willing to stay on-time and play with a click, and in 4/4, and…….
On the other hand, if you are using footswitch and if you want manual start/stop control, remember that start stop activation isn’t until the actual button clicks all the way down… so there is some lag while depressing the button. so, it’s not when you react, or start pressing the button down, but when it actually clicks. Good luck……
If all else fails and you can’t get it down, you should donate that piece of cr@p pedal to me [grins deviously while rubbing hands together]
freshchopsMemberQuote:I’m comparing the 2880 to other similar units like the Boss RC50. I certainly prefer the 2880 from what I’ve seen so far, except for one point – the RC50 has an XLR in, whereas the 2880 is jack only. So, how does it work to feed a mic to a 2880? Do you have to (or is it recommended to) use a mic preamp on the way in?Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide.
Mark
I use an XLR to 1/4″ adapter. You can check them out here:
The mic Pre would be recommended if you have a phantom powered condenser mic. In that case you need a phantom power supplied mic pre…. many to choose from, the ART Tube MP’s are fine on a budget. If not, you can just plug straight in and adjust input gain to before clipping levels.
freshchopsMemberQuote:I’m not sure I could say best in the last 10 years, because I really loved Murray Street.Agreed, Murray Street was VERY good too (well, aren’t they all). I guess to me, Eternal has a good, rockin’ vibe throughout the whole album. Almost the most upbeat of all of theirs and dare I say…… a little pop’ish in song structure. Eternal has more harmonies, more vocal dubbing, more ABC, ABC song structure with the emphasis on light-heavy-heavier, light-heavy-heavier…. and overall has a really good upbeat vibe to it. I think this is what’s most appealing about it to me for the time being. I can see the majority of the tracks on Eternal having a good radio presence.
Murray Street is FANTASTIC to me too, but in it’s own way is more dark than the Eternal. I love that side of SY, but was ready for what they did with the Eternal. It’s definitely as “special” as eternal, I guess I might overlook it being such a short album. Probably one of my top 5 SY songs would be Sympathy for the Strawberry, but aside from that, that album lacks, “special” songs to me. I caught them live on that tour though and it was righteous.
I’m probably overhyping the new album, but I’m also elated to be so amused by yet another new SY album. Who’d-a thunk it after doing it for so long?!!?
freshchopsMemberWow, gotta chime in on this one. I’ll start by saying I’m an huge SY fan to the point of clinical. I will confess though, that while each had their magical tracks, their last few albums felt a little mundane and uninspired as a whole, in their own way. And that’s not to bad on a “Sonic” level.
However, this new album “Eternal” is GREAT to me. It is by far their best in the last 10 years or so and might even be compared to one of their best to date.
It might not be as iconic as Daydream Nation, Dirty and the others along the way that have that “change your life” impact…. but it is a complete collage of all the magical and catchy elements that they’ve pulled off in all of their creative collabs. What I’m saying is that this one spares no nonsense and it seems their focus on “what works” was at it’s peek. It also, as a whole, has a great and consistent vibe to it. The overall tone and mix is a little unique to all previous albums, but the same could be said about each one before this one (minus the J.O’rourke projects all sounding similar)…. but the mix is VERY NICE. It’s more full and powerful than any before it but still has just the right amount of Raw texture to it. In all, it doesn’t have any iconic tracks that will stand among others in the past, but it makes up for it in consistent catchiness and complete relistening value.
Wow, I was so ready for a dose of sonic greatness and this one fit’s the fix!!! and I’m only on about my 5th listen. Their sound and style is so infectious and unique…. they is no-one like them.
Unfortunately, they’re not heading my way (New Orleans) this year…….
Couple side notes, I’m really hearing a V.Underground / Lou Reed influence in Thurston’s vocals on “Poison Arrow”…. still sounds like Thurston doing his thing, but my first hought when I heard it was “Lou Reed?”… never associated the two before.
Nice throwback on “Calming the Snake” when Kim opens with “Come on down to the River” ….. of the old Green River days.
freshchopsMemberQuote:Hi
Have had my 2880 for about a month, love it. It has suddenly stopped working correctly – it will not respond to any attempt to record, play, start a new loop, nothing. Everything was working great. Have tried reseating the card, unplugging the footswitch, pretending that all was lost and giving it one last shot, prayer, all for not.
Expensive paperweight, especially with the footwswitch. What do I need to do here to get this thing back in working order? My Compact Flash memory card that came with the 2880, ya’ know, the unlabeled 1GB card one….. broke within a couple of weeks. I bought some high-speed 2GB cards (TRANSCEND brand) online for cheap and replaced the original one. Haven’t had a problem since.
I can’t say for sure that your problem is limited to the card, but I’m betting that’s all it is, especially if you can still hear your dry signal. Try another compact flash card before anything. I’ve also heard of others cards failing too……
Let us know if you find out this is the problem or otherwise what it is….. Memory cards aside, I’ve got a feeling these boxes are going to hold up for a long time.
NOTE to EHX, might be time to source a different supplier for the next batch of Memory Cards, just sayin’, ….. I’ve been using Transcend memory for years now from both budget memory and their high end for photography, and they’ve been solid memory. They are great value and very dependable. Actually an 8GB compact flash card went through my washing machine last week and came out working like day one. Maybe Transcend offers private label…. or generic.
freshchopsMemberVERY cool of Fender to acknowledge the SY boys as iconic Fender players.
Just wedge drumsticks in your strings and you’ll be rockin’ in no time!
freshchopsMemberlicking chops…… anxiously waiting for a video demo……
