If the Memory Boy continues to pop while going in/out of bypass, after it has been powered up more than a minute then probably the capacitor needs replacement.
Flick (EHX Staff)ModeratorI believe the compressor is making its own popping sound which is then going into the delay loop of the Memory Boy. So the compressor is really its own problem. Knowing this it doesn’t change that I think a capacitor on the Memory Boy needs replacing.
Does the Memory Boy pop when BLEND is set to 100% dry?
Also I should mention it is normal for the Memory Boy to pop when going in/out of effect mode for the first 30 seconds or so after power up. While all the voltages get settled.
Flick (EHX Staff)ModeratorQuote:I recently got a Memory Boy and while playing it tonight, it started to audibly pop when I engaged the pedal. This was especially troublesome because, the Memory Boy being a delay pedal, the pop sound is repeated. The pop isn’t particularly loud. In fact I can’t even hear it with the blend all the way left. It’s the repeats that are the problem. Is this just something I’m going to have to live with? Does the switch need to be replaced? Thanks for your feedback. This pop is most likely due to a bad capacitor on the output of the delay section. It should be fixed under warranty. August 19, 2009 at 2:53 pm in reply to: New Electro Harmonix V256 Vocoder with Reflex-Tune Video! #100724Flick (EHX Staff)ModeratorThere’s a mode in the V-256 called INSTRUMENT CTRL which is not really mentioned in the video. It is a wonderul effect that allows you to set the pitch of your vocals (no matter what pitch you sing) with a monophonic instrument. It works really well with guitar but it won’t track chords.
The way it works is you play a note on your guitar, say an E at the 5th fret on the B string. Then sing into the mic, the output of the effect will be your voice pich shifted either up or down to the same E note you played on the guitar.
Think of it as Auto-Tune that let’s you play the notes in real-time. It’s great as a new kind of talk box effect or new style of vocoding. I see a lot of possibilities for live use, mixing the guitar and vocal together where the vocal tracks the guitar.

BRAVO, you’ve created another masterpiece!
It is a present and future classic.
Thanks!! You made our day.
We really appreciate the feedback both good and bad.
Flick (EHX Staff)ModeratorQuote::Can the delay get short enough to at least get into the bathroom verb range? Basically- can I do this with it?
The minimum delay time is 30 mS which is I think a little longer than the guitar at the beginning of that song. The max tim is 550 mS.
Flick (EHX Staff)ModeratorQuote:Thanks for all the helpful answers Flick! No rush, get your work doneSome more questions for when you have time:
Do the memory boy and memory toy self oscillate?
Does the expression pedal on the memory boy sweep the whole delay range?
Does the depth on the LFO get deep enough to do some flange sounds as well?1. Yes they both self-oscillate, or run away.
2. Yes the expression pedal on the Memory Boy can sweep through the entire range. You have to tune the DELAY knob to set the maximum delay time range of the pedal’s sweep.
3. It doesn’t do flange but that has nothing to do with how deep the modulation goes. Flange is modulation of a very short delay time. The Memory Boy’s minimum delay time is not short enough to do flange effects.Flick (EHX Staff)ModeratorI have to get some work done now, I’ll check back later.
Flick (EHX Staff)ModeratorQuote:Flick, some more questions if you’d be kind of to oblige:Qballs-
1. when the resonance is cranked does it self-oscillate or get near self-oscillation?
2. With the attack and decay controls, is it possible to get Microsynth type filter sounds and hence synth sounds? Jack Conte’s video didn’t really make it clear, since he was going for the upbeat funk thing.Answers:
1. Near self-oscillation yes, it does get very peaky! But not self-oscillation, although if you have a bunch of gain in your setup either before or after the Q-Balls it might self-oscillate, we haven’t tried it.
2. You can get a synth dive that is similar to the Micro Synth, by setting the Start and Stop control appropriately in addition to Attack and Decay. So, yes you can get “synthy” sounds out of the Q-Balls but they might not all sound like a Micro Synth.Flick (EHX Staff)ModeratorQuote:The expression pedal controls delay time when the rate switch is set to either Vibrato or Chorus modes. Set the switch to EXP. PEDAL mode and the expression pedal controls the modulation rate. This explanation of the expression pedal control on the Memory Boy is accurate.
Flick (EHX Staff)ModeratorQuote:My questions:V256:
-what do the drone modes do?
-what does reflex tune mode do?
-what does instrument control mode do?
-what does transposition mode do?The V256 has two optional internal synthesizers so that you don’t need to have an instrument plugged in to start vocoding. The three Robo sounds (which are all identical) have a synth that makes you sound like a robot. The drone modes have a synth that is more like an organ.
Single Drone is one note, Major drone is a major triad or chord and Minor drone is a minor triad or chord. Turning the Pitch knob in all 6 vocoder modes will set the pitch of the internal synth. Turning this knob fully CCW clockwise will turn off the internal synth so you can use external instruments. You can also use MIDI to control the internal synths.
The bottom three modes are all pitch shifters.
Reflex Tune is automatic pitch correction based on the scale you set it to or the chord you play on your instrument.
Transposition is simply pitch shifting your vocals by a fixed amount, +/- 1 octave.
Instrument Control mode allows you to pitch shift your vocals to whatever pitch your instrument is playing. It is a monophonic effect. Play an E note on your guitar, no matter what note you sing into the effect it will output the same E note your guitar is playing.
Flick (EHX Staff)ModeratorQuote:My questions:Cathedral:
-what does infinite do?V256:
-what do the drone modes do?
-what does reflex tune mode do?
-what does instrument control mode do?
-what does transposition mode do?Memory Boy:
-what does the expression mode control?Infinite, on the Cathedral, is basically a reverb that never decays. So it’s like freezing a note. When you enter infinite mode while holding down the TAP FSW, it will block the input of the reverb section so you can’t add more notes to the infinite though you can play over the frozen notes. If you set the reverb time to infinite by using the Reverb knob, you can put as many notes or sounds into the infinite reverb as you want.
