Interesting. I don’t have an Enigma, but I think I could real close to a Mu-Tron III with a Tube Zipper.

I have a similar problem with my Russian Big Muff.

Did you ever figure out the problem?

My Tube Zipper was bought used and it has some Chinese SHUGUANG “SILVER DRAGON” 12AX7B tubes in it.

With some work, I can get self oscillations, but I can’t change the FREQ and get different notes like in the demo video. I need to have the RES, DRIVE & GAIN cranked and I have to get the FREQ knob in just the right sweet spot between 11-12 o’clock to find a very narrow squealing pitch.

expression pedal ring mod is cool. colorsound have a pedal like that but it’s not very versatile.

Snarling Dogs also had the Mold Spore with some exp. pedal type control built in a wah enclosure. Jeff Beck uses one lately.

    Hi Ron-

I never opened up a pedal before to work on it, but I would like to try and repair this myself. I see the four CA3094 chips. How does troubleshooting them begin? Do I need to get my hands on a working CA3094 IC and start swapping them out one by one, or can I test them somehow without pulling them off the board?

Thanks for the tip. Much appreciated.

I found great guts photos of the latest Sovtek Smallstone here: http://www.pedalarea.com/small_stone.htm

The white ground wire seems redundant as the input jack is grounded to the casing with a washer, but I connected it anyway and still no phasing.

I just got a used Sovtek/Russian Smallstone. One of the newer ones in the smaller black box with just four screws on the top.

It doesn’t work. It lights up and passes a signal. The color switch even engages (you can hear a filter change). But there is no phase and the rate knob does nothing.

I am thinking it might be a ground problem. Inside all looks OK except there is a white ground wire that is not attached to anything. One end has a small washer to screw it down somewhere, the other end was soldered to something but now it is just flopping around loose.

I don’t want tru-bypass, just want it working again.

Can anyone tell me where this ground wire attaches?

(Not sure if this deserves a new thread. Am I hijacker?)

That’s what I thought. I bought this one used so I guess someone replaced the tubes at some point.

I hope this is just a matter of replacing old tubes…

Yeah I wish I had some 12AX7’s laying around to test.

Do you know what tubes come stock with the Tube Zipper? Mine has some made in China 12AX7b’s.

sorry for the diss, but it doesn’t sound anything like a Bi-Phase. The Bi-Phase kills it in every way possible[yes i do own one].

Nobody said anything sounded like a Bi-Phase. I was saying I would love to see Mike & EHX try to attempt making an XO version of the Mu-Tron Bi-Phase.

Mike, can’t wait to hear the QBalls, but for the love of god, please recreate the Mu-Tron Bi-Phase in an EHX XO enclosure!

That has got to be the tastiest, most musical phasor my ears have ever heard.

PS- And while you are at it, add a three-way toggle switch for Sine/Triangle/Square waves & and expression jack to sweep continuosly between these wave shapes.

Did you see that he also designed the Stereo Polyphase?

Yes I knew Mike designed the Stereo Polyphase. I sold my Bi-Phase & Mu-Tron III and bought a Stereo Polyphase (seeing as it kinda covers both territory). The Stereo Polyphase is very unique. Right now it’s on my pedalboard just before my Big Muff in Slow Envelope mode. I would love one after my fuzz too for Phasing but I use a Small Stone & Flanger Hoax there so I’m good.

Still there is nothing I found as lush as a Bi-Phase. It’s just too dang big for my Pedalboard.

I too vote for XO Enclosures but with the 1/4″ input/output/exp jacks on the top, not on the sides.

The Malekko B:Assmaster does it this way. Makes pedalboard routing easier for me.
