Would it have anything to do with the low output I am experiencing?

Thanks for the Op Amp info & pics czymaupy. I have very little experience opening up effects and tweaking but I might be able to handle this.

Any special brands that are better than others if I buy a LM324N chip?

TZ need 1A at start & about 720mA for normal work.

Thanks for the info. I just started using a Cioks AC10 power supply. It has 12V AC / 800mA. Not quite enough for start up.

My Zipper just started acting sick. The envelope filter doesn’t work and the output has dropped a lot. Everything cranked up is still less than unity. I was going to replace the tubes but maybe it was my Cioks AC10 that was the problem…

I was hoping for a hybrid to get the best of both worlds. But then again I never even liked the Nano Bassballs (which EHX says is identical to the Bassballs meaning analog I guess). Compared to my Sovtek, It had a clicky-gate-closing sound on the end tails of long sustained notes. Un-useable for me. Maybe the digitally modeled version will be an improvement.

Has anybody figured this out yet?

Mine is still in the same shape as described above. Have not got around to tinkering with it yet.

The problem in my case was the Chinese 12AX7B tubes. When I switched to EHX 12AX7’s, it OSCILLATES.

    @ Mr Grim

i dont know if all russian bballs are better sounding than the nano version… but when/if you get the nano version do a quick review…

@ friedjesseradio the small stone is on my to-buy list already ;) is nano version the same with the old big-chassis one?

I use my russian bassballs with the distortion switch on and the knob at about 7-8 o’clock. I went to a gtr store to try out the nano but did not like it. My russian bassballs has a nice long, smooth decay at the end of the filter sweep, the nano I tried made a mechanical “clunk” sound at the end of the decay. The clunk sound was very low in volume, but it was there at the end of each note as it trailed off.

Anybody else hear this “clunk” sound at the end of the nano baseballs?

… I’ve been using it as my main dirt pedal. The envelope can be brought very subtly into the signal…I use just barely enough to be noticeable…

    Me too.

And I want to add that I like the Tube Zipper better than my old late 70’s Mu-Tron III. So much better that I sold it.

Thanks for the offer dawson1488 but I will get my feet wet and try to fix this one. If I ruin it for good, I’ll keep the box to rehouse something in.

You know the input is on the left and the output is on the right.

Yes I knew that but I reversed the cables just for kicks. No luck. They are correctly labeled.

    — sounds like a capacitor dishcarging maybe or a bad trannie? Does it have an LED?
Dumb questions — is there a battery in it? Is the battery good? If you take out the battery and run from an adapter does it change? Is the adapter good?

The battery is a new alkaline. Also tried my main pedalboard power supply. It works intermittently either way.

Get a new one!… What kind of amp are you using?…

A new one yes, Great Advice! BTW, I’ve been using a Harmony 303B (8″ Jensen & a volume knob).

With all my recent troubleshooting, I was able to get this Big Muff to run for about 10 minutes. If it started to fade out I just boxed it’s ears (or gave it a strong tap with me knuckles). Then I walked away for a smoke and when I returned it stopped working again. It won’t pass sound when engaged (but the led lights up OK). When the effect is off, the bypassed sound is loud & clear.

I opened it up and everything looks fine & dandy. Can’t see any lose wires or bad solder. The ground is attached.
I am almost ready to throw in the towel. Thanks for the advice one & all.

I use a PedalTrain pedalboard with a BBE Supa Charger. It’s 110/220V and the specs are almost the same as the Voodoo Labs Power Supply but it’s cheaper. And has a bright blue led. Blue not red.¨

I use a true bypass looper with a master bypass to solve that problem.

I use an LPB-1 with it to solve the volume drop issues. And I agree it is NOT easy to get up and going. Takes some commitment to get anything out of it.

I’m not a big flanger fan either but I really like the Hoax. If you are a tweaker with lots of time on yer hands, you might get your money’s worth with the Hoax.
