It’s not a matter of knowing all the specs and then logically deciding which one makes more “sense”. It’s a matter of tactile feedback, and knowing the feeling of getting warmed-up tubes really going and responding dynamically to your touch, and not being stiff as solid state circuitry often feels. There IS a difference.
With tubes, the louder, the better. Sometimes with solid state, the louder, the louder (and harsher).
Why is so much effort put into making SS sound like tubes? Talk to Hartley Peavey
At which point I believe this is very much a “Coke V. Pepsi” kind of debate. Tubes hate em’ or love em’ they do make a difference in your sound whether you percieve it as good or bad which is something that can’t be measured imperically.
Wow thanks for replying!
Should I be tightening the nut next to the plastic gear? I don’t know what to use.. that thing is THIN.
Also, is there something I can spray that will counteract WD40 to prevent it from damaging any pots? I sprayed only on the nut, but I’m paranoid about it now..
What i would do is pull the Rocker of the main part of the pedal and, with a paper towel, dry off the parts you sprayed with WD40. You could probably take the other pin you still have to a hardware store to find a replacement for it, just be careful not to lose it. Also a word to the wise, be very careful when spraying WD40 near or around pots that are not sealed as the solvent in WD40 can dislove and ruin the carbon element inside of it.
I have been making minor repairs to an EHX Muff Fuzz Crying Tone that I inherited and I have a few questions if anyone could help me. So far I’ve had to solder one of the mode switch wires back into place and solder the battery ground back onto the inst contact. After that everything worked and sounded clean, but this pedal has been unused for decades and I found that after playing for a few hours the rocker pedal got stuck. It wasn’t that the little plastic gear was misaligned, it was just stuck!- I sprayed a little WD40 and it works fine.. a little TOO well- thus my problem: I am missing one of the pins that holds the rocker pedal in place, making it a little wobbly. In addition, I like to play with the way half cocked, but since I sprayed the WD40 in it, (and possibly due to the wobble from the missing pin) the rocker pedal just slams down every time I try to leave it up. Before it got stuck I could leave it wherever I wanted it, even though the missing pin has always made it a little wobbly.
So..
1. What should I use to replace the missing pin on that side?
2. Is there anything i can do to reverse the effects of the WD40 and is the oil making the rocker too loose or is it the pin’s fault?
If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it, since this pedal is almost where it needs to be. That and it is my FAVORITE EHX pedal. EHX PLEASE BRING THESE BACK ! ! !
Gracias,
russilo

Yes yes, my only main beef with my beloved hazarai is not enough presets per mode, and a hold/(Chaos) button (like the sustain on a piano)…. i wonder what would happen if you put two SMMH’s in series with one another… I think we’d find our other parallel universe. To Delay a Delay.
Tubes in pedals just seem like a bad combination when i’m slamming down on them with my foot. I really like how the tube zipper sounds, but the fact that it has tubes in it just seems incidental and secondary to me when it has the sounds I’m looking for in it. As far as amps go I firmly beleive in tube power .
