Haven’t done that with that particular amp, have had generally good luck with EHX pre-amp tubes, mostly in pedals.
Just wanted to say your band sounds awesome, and whatever your bass rig is, it’s gettin’ the job done!
fantomenosMemberWell, it’s a 12AX7 in the pre-amp, so these are certainly obtainable.
The high-end EHX version would be the gold-pin:

From personal experience with their tube pedals, I can say that EHX tubes are reliable and sound great. It also costs about $17.00.
Hard-core purists would probably suggest an eBay search for NOS versions of the tube it originally came with, if you’re in the mood for a difficult and expensive adventure (not being sarcastic, some people really like this kind of thing).
THe other nice thing is that a 12AY7 is probably (check this) compatible if you want to experiment with a smoother, lower gain sound, which also are cheap and easy to find.
fantomenosMemberI use my LPB-1 (and LPB2ube) in lots of ways, including with SS amps.
I’m a bass player, so this may not totally (tonally?) apply, but I bought my LPB-1 to go with my Sunn Studio Lead, a SS amp with no master volume, to give it a little more range. It sounded very different with the LPB-1 pushing it than just tweaking the volume.
Another nice application is in front of an Envelope Triggered effect like an auto-wah. This essentially gives you two settings for your auto-wah, since it will pushed harder with the LPB on, so you can have a mellow setting turn extreme when you trigger the LPB.
Obviously, as you say, this effect was designed to push tube amps into overdrive that might not otherwise have been designed with “crunch” in mind. My Sound City 150 is a very clean tube bass head, and the LPB-1 gives it some modern grit. So yeah, I fully support saving for a tube amp!
fantomenosMemberWell, if you’re ever in Eugene, OR…
I’ve heard really good things about the Jekyll and Hyde!
fantomenosMemberI’ve used the EHX tube pedals as pre-amps quite a bit when i gig with my Sunn Concert Slave. I particularly like the “Hot Tubes” and the LPB-2, and I just got the “TubeEQ” which sounded promising in the store.
The pedals are big, which may defeat the “portable rig” purpose fmalitz mentioned, but they sure sound good!
fantomenosMemberTube Zipper is an unreal pedal.
I’m using mine with my fretless bass and it’s just exactly what I’ve always wanted from an envelope filter.
fantomenosMemberCool idea putting 12ay7’s in there! I might have to do that.
I love my Hot Tubes, I use it as a bass pre-amp, with the distortion turned al the way down and the gain at like 9 o’clock. Gives it all little bit of tube dirt without losing articulation/clarity.
12ay7’s may give me more usable sounds…
fantomenosMemberOff the top of my head?
A Micro-Pog with just the octave-up cranked!
Seriously, i don’t have a Talking Machine, but I’m considering it…
What instrument are you using it on?
fantomenosMemberThe micro-POG has 3 knobs, dry, -1 and +1. Turning down dry and turning up one of the others does exactly what you want.
If you want to annoy your lead singer, turn down the dry signal and max the other 2. Then play all your bass lines an octave up on the neck. Tell the singer this is your new tone, and you think it’s really going to catch on. The longer you can keep a straight face, the better this works.
fantomenosMemberI had noise problems with mine when I first got it, and solved them by tightening the screw between the tubes (removing the tube guard first). Since your problem is channel specific, that may not help, but it’s a quick thing to try.
If turning the knob really increases the noise, dirty pot could well be the culprit. I’ve never cleaned a pot on one of these, although I’ve cleaned them on amps plenty of times, and it’s not particularly dificult, just swab the contact with some rubbing alcohol, and let it dry.
Taking it apart to get to the contact, well, that’s the fun part…
fantomenosMemberHey welcome to the forum! I think you’ll enjoy the Pulsar, I don’t have one, but I’ve played one and it’s a very weird pedal.
On the tremolo trip, I’ve got a Wiggler, which i really like, although I use the vibrato functions more than the tremolo side.
Anyway, let us know what you think of the pedal! We’ve got a reviews section, or you can post links to sound sample, whatever!

I read PG on my IPad all the time.
fantomenosMemberSure, here you go. This is my fretless bass into The Wiggler, into the Noise Box. It’s one-take, live dry recording, I haven’t post-processed at all.
At about 0:45 I start messing with the freq know on the Noise Box, then the voicing knob. Around 1:20 I turn the rate knob on Thwe Wiggler, and things get really crazy. Enjoy!
fantomenosMemberI have the Voodoo Labs tremolo, which I like a lot.
Lately, though, I’ve been using “The Wiggler” the tube-based EHX one. Needing its own wall-wart is an obvious drawback, but it sounds really warm and amp-like.
And, yeah, the Noise Box is SubDecay, one of the weirdest pedals I’ve ever come across, but surprisingly flexible for what it is.
