It amazes me that after playing using modeled effects for so long , that I can find the real muff pi so unique & brand new , my eyes & mind are truly open now and fixiated on stompboxes

Yeah… tell me about it. And EHX really gets it right … even with their digital pedals. I’m a EHX addict too… (Big Muff Pi, Small Clone and #1 Echo so far…planning on a POG2 and a Memory Toy soon)

No formula here… go with whatever sounds good for you…

A good way to get started:

Filters: (Wah’s, Auto-wah’s, that sort of stuff) usually before distortion

Compressor: Usually before distortion. I would try them before and after filters to see what happens

Boost: I like it before distortion

Modulation: Well… traditionally after distortion, but there are some advocates to using it before. I have a chorus after my gain (Distortion/OD) section and a Phaser before my gain section. The phase then work kinda like a filter

Delay/Reverb: Usually the last thing. I would put Reverb in the very end. Just before the amp. (Or in the effect’s loop if one is available)

This is just a rough guideline. Part of the joy of having as many pedals is experimenting with them.

I had a Boss CE-3 for years. Got rid of it. Sold cheap!

I have a Small CLone now. Absolutely love it to bits. Exactly what I wanted a chorus to sound like.

The Boss CE-3 coloured too much my tone, didn’t have enough depth and I never used it stereo anyway.

Might work for some. I don’t know why I put up with it for so long.

Now I have a Chorus I can love! (Cheesy eh?)

Should really try with power suppy options before buying a noise gate type thing!

Again, as I said… after I got my SKB-55 powered pedal board… absolutely no hum nor hiss!!! (And I had it really bad before)

If the morley power brick doesn’t do the trick… oh well… look for some other brand and model.

There’s plenty of brands making them: Voodoo Labs, Dunlop, Gator, EFX, SKB (Pedal Board)…

Can I suggest you to try to test another unit? I have a #1 echo and no volume drop for me!!!!

I’ve heard other people with the same complaint. Mine works perfectly (NO VOL DROP).

So maybe some units do and others don’t (?!?!?!?!)

Or you can go to the shop where you got yours and exchange it for a Memory toy!

I tried to mod my Small Clone to add a depth pot and I think I’m doing something wrong. I found a site online that said to use a 10k linear pot. I’ve desoldered the switch, removed the resistor marked R27 on my board, and soldered two lugs of the pot in place. The knob goes from almost no depth to just about full very quickly and then there’s no change through the rest of the rotation. Do I need to remove additional resistors to get this mod to work or do I need to try a pot of a different taper/value?

So…. did you work it out? We’re curious!!!

I found my #1 Echo ONLY works with the PWR supply that came with it! Anything else will make it behave funny… And that’s what held me back from getting a Memory Boy! But I’m considering a Memory Toy for its tolerance to different PWR Supplies (hope so…I guess… )

Before buying a noise gate or such… have you tried a power supply like a power brick (several outputs in paralel, not in daisy chain).

I had a horrible problem with both HUM and HISS. When I bought a SKB Stage Five pedal board … guess what. Even my Big Muff is dead quite (Apart from the noise I intentionally make when playin with it!!! :) )

Another thing to analyze is your guitar’s shielding (That would have a considerable impact on HUM)

Good luck and post your experiment results here!!!

    Cheers.

Hummm. I just tried one out and noticed the same volume bump!

Anyone else tried the workaround using the the volumes on octaves and dry signal as mentioned above???

Awesome pedal… is next on my list…

I quite like combining different DIST/OD/Boost pedals and the muff sounds amazing combined with my other pedals AS LONG AS IT IS THE LAST DIRT PEDAL ON THE SIGNAL CHAIN (in my opinion).

I obviously don’t have the gain all the way up.

    Combinations I have tried succesfully:

    1. MXR Microamp -> BMP (Very fuzzy. Brings the best ou of my BMP. Love it!!!!)
    2. Vox Satchurator -> BMP (Sounds Heavy, very modern type distortion.)
    3. MXR Wylde OD -> BMP (That good old David Gilmour Tone)
    4. Ibanez TK-999 -> BMP (Bluesy…very bluesy)

They all sound huge when combined and in all instances the other pedals added clarity and note definition to the BMP tone. But again, I don’t use much gain on my dirt pedals which makes it a lot easier to combine them.

So, as mentioned before, go to a shop with you Guitar and Pedal and try a BMP on an amp similar to yours (if possible same model). Play around with different Gain and EQ Settings. Swap positions between the Muff and the other Dist pedals.

    You are the judge!
