Small clone rocks!!! Best chorus pedal I’ve ever played with.

I have aan SKB Stage Five and absolutely love it.

But (And it’s a BIG BUT) two of my pedals can’t be powered by it.

For the EHX #1 Echo and the Ibanez Tube King I have to use their own Power Supplies.

I still recommend you to get the SBK pedal board and use the dedicated Power Suplpy for the memory boy.

I have a dark-brown feeling that there is no answer to my question…

HAH! Those are the questions worth asking!

Anyway… you can try one of those pedal switching things… but a good one would cost US$500+

Your pedals would be always on and would be included/excluded from the signal path depending on how you configure your banks.
Some of the brands that have this:
    – Carl Martin
    – Voddo Labs
    – Rocktron
    – Cusack

    Good luck!

True bypass (or any mechanical bypass) isn’t all it made out to be as people are slowly learning…

Agreed. Unless you can clearly idenify a problem with your buffered pedals… don’t mess with it!

I’ve got a messy combination of TB pedals and Buffered pedals. Plus a line driver embedded on my pedalboard, wich works wonders for one of my guitars (tele with passive, low gain pickups).

Haven’t really had any noticeable problems with my pedals. Only thing is that some combinations of DIST/OD pedals gives me some volume drop. But to blame that solely on the buffers is a bit of a gamble.

TB has it’s applications. So do buffers on pedals.

I like ehx-pedals a lot! My pedalboard is overcrowded with them.

On the recordings of my live performances I hear in the quieter moments the clicks of my favorite pedals.

Do you have suggestions to make them more quiet?

    My EHX Chorus does that.

Before you start playing, try turning down the volume on your amp and stomp ON/OFF on all your pedals.

Thanx very much for the help…

    I´ll try that fx setup.

What´s the difference between having the modulation fx on the amp´s fx loop ? is there a lot of difference on the sound than having them in line, at the end of the fx chain? is it better?

I think the answer is related to the preamp… but I don´t understand how that works… or maybe that applies to valve amps, in order to keep the tone. In my case, I have a 100 watts Marshall amp that is not tube based, so what would be better? modulation fx by the amp´s fx loop or at the end of the chain?

Finally, I´d like to ask if it´s better to keep the amp´s volume and gain settings on a high level and the pedal´s volume on a low level (like the big muff)… or having the amp´s volume settings to a medium level and the fx on high volume level, or just apply the Jimi Hendrix´s system: everything at 10 level?

    Thanx.

If you have dirtortion in the pre-amp (e.g.: A 12AX7 tube in the pre-amp being “pushed”) it’s kinda good practice to have the modulation after the saturation. It really depends on personal taste but if you apply reverb on a saturated sound it sounds cleaner than distorting a “reverbed” sound. The latter would sound quite messy in my opinion.

I have a phaser before my distortion/OD. I like it that way. Gives a sort of a univibey sound, or almost like an oscillating filter when before the gain section.

But I keep delays, reverbs and choruses in the end of the signal chain. I think It sounds cleaner. But really… it’s more a matter of personal taste and “tradition”than anything else.

Just try different configurations and see what it sounds like. You might discover that breaking some rules gives you what you like better…

What do you mean with “- Could be that the muff doesn’t like some of the buffers used on other pedals” ? I´m sorry if this is a stupid question but I´m a total newbie with this. I really appreciate your help. Thanx.[/quote]

Some fuzz pedals are a bit picky with what comes before them in the signal chain.

Sometimes it has to do with input/output impedances…

    Hi Richard.

    My two cents here:

Compressors right after the guitar and before your other pedals. (Maybe after the wah, but definetly before GAIN/OD/DIST pedals)

Muff should be (MY OPINION HERE) last distortion in the chain. This means that all other distortions come before the muff.

The volume drop can have so many different causes:
    – Could be that the muff doesn’t like some of the buffers used on other pedals
    – Could be because the MUFF is mid-scooped, so it “feels” like you have a volume drop and you can get really lost in the middle of a band.
    – The room where you are playing at the moment, associated with the mid-scoop. So that the sound that comes from the speakers doesn’t resonate as you expected. Try your setup in different places, put your amp on a table, than at the floor, etc, etc. See what happens.

And finally, don’t put your gainy pedals (compression, overdrives, distortions, etc) in the amp’s loop. You could even fry the power section of your amp!!!!

Modulation and delays should be OK.

man…wish it weren’t always the case of “getting the older version” =P

Thanks for the feedback, now I’m gonna look into trying to find an older version, possibly.

You know, for some reason…my amp won’t let me use just the return of my effects loop, wish it worked kus my Digitech Valve and Tube distortions, I would love to use as my main preamp, since I only have solid-state amps…

    Two things:

1 – I’m pretty sure Maxon still manufactures the “old” tk-999 under its own brand. And I’ve read it’s even better than the one I have. You might have to import one from Japan or talk to an authorized Maxon importer/distributor in your area. If you’re in the US try Pro Guitar Shop.
2 – I used my TK-9999 in my amp’s loop (A solid state fender) and it sounded pretty awesome. But you need to make sure you won’t blow your amp’s power section if you do…

    Cheers.

Exactly. I’ve got Boss DS-1, EHX BMP, Ibanez TK-999, MXR Wylde OD and a MXR Micro amp. I use all of them with low gain settings and cascade them they give some very interesting sounds combined.

How IS the Ibanez TK-999…is it versatile or just meant for one distortion type?

I really like it. Since it has a full EQ (Bass / Treble / Mids ) It’s really versatile. It comes with a 12AX7 but I’ve been giving some thought to try a 12AU7.

It also has huge output, so works wonders as a crunch/boost in front of a valve amp.

    Not to mention beautiful dynamics.

Mine is the older model, Japan made (by Maxon, I believe). I heard some bad comments about the version made in Korea.

The new one (The red funny thing) I have not tested at all, so I can’t comment on that one.

    Cheers.

Just made the pedalboard this weekend and slowing collecting gear. What should I add?

I’m thinking a Memory Boy or some delay.

What do you need the three overdrive/distortions for?

why not? they all sound totally different. I started with the blues driver which is great, then added the Big Muff which is of course ridiculously fuzzy and sounds nothing like the blues driver and just got the metal muff on a great deal and it sounds totally unlike either of them.

Do we NEED any pedals? Not really. They are just lots of fun :)

I would have it right after the distortion/OD pedals. But that’s just me.
