I finally got a picture of my Muff Family. I’m now planning on getting a Deluxe Big Muff to go along with the rest of the gang. The big boy on the left is my V6 and the one on the right with the LED is my Reissue. Of all of these, the V6 is still my favorite. The Germanium 4 is very interesting, but quite different. The Tone Wicker is probably my favorite of the new breed of Muff pedals. And before anyone points out that the Holy Stain isn’t a Muff… I am well aware of that fact. It is an EH pedal, though.
The background I photographed them on was printed on banner material using a pack of strings I scanned. It’s a little blurry, but turned out quite nice, considering. I’ve got the banner hanging on the wall in my music room now.
Would LOVE to see a larger version of that pic.
Yep, I’ve added the Deluxe and the new Bass Nano Big Muff Pi to my immediate need EHX pedal list…
Yes the glove should go after the comp, though probably you don’t want to use both at the same time. Distortion/Overdrive pedals already compress the signal. Use it for when you play clean.
As far as the presets on your Spider 3; presets with external pedals is way different than using internal effects. I have a Vox Valvetronix modeling amp and tweak the amp to the pedal, that gives me the best results.
When you have the nano, you have my NYC Big Muff Pi in a smaller package.
The RAMs head replica is not that expensive at $99, though it would be pretty cool if EHX would do a classic muff reissue line. With perhaps commemorative artwork.
BTW, thanks for the link on that kit. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do with custom artwork and at that price is pretty darn good.
…Rule 1: Never sell a pedal (unless your upgrading to something way better) … ive had some cool stuff over the years that i wish i still had.
Truer words about guitar pedals never spoken. I was at the point of selling my Little Big Muff Pi because it did not sound as “wooly” as the NYC; played it again last night and realized it’s a great distortion pedal in it’s own right.
…also getting ready to pull the trigger on a couple of Pigtronix pedals that are on clearance…
They are NOT the same pedal. The little Big Muff is more of a distortion, the sound more jagged then the regular sized Pi. The regular sized Muff (as well as the nano) I’d call “wooly” and the “little” I’d refer to as “angry”.
…I disagree … i know my Big Muff sucked a lot of tone … add a few other tone suckers to the mix and you might as well play through a small solid state amp or DI into a computer ….. same effect.
Well yeah, if you have them all hooked up at once. I’ve got All the NYC Big Muff Pis (the regular size, the “little” and the nano) no need to have them all. The nano stays on my board with the big amp, while the big one is in the man cave which is too small for a big amp.
There is a company (name escapes me) who makes a replica of the Rams Head Big Muff. There is a youtube channel called Frankenstomp where he reviews the Ram’s head clone pedal. Pretty reasonably priced.
Congratulations, though personally I would have recommended trying the regular sized NYC Big Muff Pi and seeing if you like that one. Tonight hopefully I’ll have a few minutes to put the little muff and the big muff through their paces and see what the differences are.
Yes, the M5 does one unit at a time, but it’s larger sister the M9 does 3 and the M13 does 4. The M13 also has the advantage of a loop, so if you have it in the Superego’s loop, you can have another in the loop of the M13. It also has MIDI control. With it’s “scene” function, you can save groupings of pedals for use in particular songs. 12 pedals in a scene. Add the expression pedal functionality and the M9 or M13 can be just the thing your looking for.
While new they list above your $300 limit, perhaps you can find one used to meet your price point. I have the M13 and while I adore my individual stompboxes (mostly EHX the M13 has incredible versatility in tonal possibilities and routing options.
Start a youtube channel where you review pedals and guitar gear. Give your videos alot of polish and high production values. Do this long enough, with enough views and you will be noticed enough to either get a gig, or at least free gear to review.
I’m sure this is how my favorite channels have done.
For youtube demo channels with great production values look up:
Fuzz Box Girl
jjlikesguitar
Frakenstomp (the black and white videos, apparently there is a band by the same name and this one is new)
This is my almost current main pedalboard. The only difference is I’ve replaced the Little Big Muff Pi with the Nano Big Muff Pi.
The case is a converted travel case for a numark DJ thingie. The whole Kit N Kaboodle is powered by VooDoo labs Power Plus 2, except for the MXR eq and Disnortion which have their own power supplies.
The freeze is in and out, Not sure whether to keep it or not. I’m really tempted to replace it with a superego and add a micro pog, if I only made more money..
The nano muff is REALLY close to the regular sized NYC Big Muff Pi. Spent a couple of days with the 2 pedals side by side and both seemed to have nearly identical sonic “girth”, which I felt the “Little” lacked.
Funny(ish) story about the memory toy; I picked up a Vox delaylab a few months after getting the memory toy. Lots of options, lots of cool sounding stuff, but in terms of pure sonic quality, it was all memory toy. So the delay lab left my main pedalboard, and on went the memory toy.
…As I stated previously, it probably had something to do with my vintage ears. They’ve had a lot of wear and tear over the years. I don’t have a modern Big Muff to do a side by side with. I have a V6, a Metal Muff, a Tone Wicker, a Double Muff, a Germanium 4 and a Little Big Muff. My Little Big Muff blew the Nano I tested out of the water. Maybe it was an inferior unit they had in the store, They only had one to try out. I’m still planning on getting one some time in the future… just because I LOVE Muffs! I’ve never had a bad Muff…. some are just better than others.
Whoa! I just swapped out the Little Big Muff for the nano on my big pedalboard. I’m hoping in the next couple of days to do a side by side comparison of the regular sized NYC Big Muff Pi and the “Little” one just to see how accurate my first impressions were.
One day I’m hoping to do the ultimate NYC Big Muff Pi shootout, with the regular sized, the little, the nano and just for giggles the Line 6 emulation. BTW, the Line 6 emulation is good, but does not sound as full. Loses a bit on top and a bit on bottom but the behavior is close.
I do envy your collection of “muffs”, aside from my 3 NYC Big Muff Pi, I just have the Metal Muff nano. I’d love a germanium, Tone Wicker and a few other muffs, but right now I’m itching for a hot tubes, which has a tone bypass feature which sounds awesome; though I have a whole lotta dirt pedals already….
