dmc777MemberQuote:Yes, I bought the original one. Big Muff styled box, (what’s left of) green painting.
I’ve read somewhere that there was no difference at all between the green and the silver DEMs. Can’t remember where.
There’s a guy on youtube that shows a mod to solve the volume drop issue on the original EM, it seems quite simple, just solder a capacitor and a resistor in there somewhere…
Your first post was asking about the newer RI’s vs. the older dem’s with internal transformer. If I would’ve known that I would’ve told you to jump on it….considering the price and condition. They’re pretty much collectable’s and is known as one, if not, the best flanger produced. The DEM RI “newer” sounds similar but there’s definately a difference in sound from the many users I’ve talked too as well as sound samples. David Gilmour used this pedal extensively thoughout the wall and more so during the the wall tour.I should have mine within the next couple days and I’ll compare it to my newer dem ri. I had the eh man fix it as well as add true bypass and fix the volume drop. Figured I might as well have him do the volume mod while he was in there.
dmc777MemberQuote:I never really noticed a huge volume problem with the new Deluxe Electric Mistress RI (definitely not as bad as the Small Stone). The only thing that bugged me at first was the ground noise but with a decent gate after it you can cut that out, mainly for recording purposes. I think they sound great. What kind of ground noise?? Mine isn’t near noisy enough to use a noise gate. Then again I don’t use gates really. Probably should with all the muff”s on my board. There’s definately a noticeable drop on mine. Especially when playing it with a muff DG style. Right now I have it in a blend loop and when I bypass it there’s a noticeable increase in sound and noticeable drop in sound when engaged. I’m using a quality blend too. The barge concepts vbjr….it could use a level knob though. I’m working on a blender similar to xotic effects x blender now though which uses tl074’s as buffers and also has blend, volume, phase and 3 section eq. I hope it works!
dmc777MemberI’m assuming you bought the older one? I currently have a reissue “no transformer” dem and love it but it also has a huge volume drop. I’ve also been thinking about getting an older one…only if they sound more like the original electric mistress with the SAD1024 IC. Does anyone know what the difference between the old green and black dem with transformer and the transitional silver and black? When did they quit using the Reticon IC. Also, Ron could you please tell us the secret resistor, I assume, to change to fix the volume drop. I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find ANY listed diy mods to the dem. I’ve found plenty of mods for the original em along with the volume drop mod. Mine also has a good bit of clock noise or ticking that’s in time with the rate pot that get pretty annoying. I will say that whatever pedals before and after the dem has a pretty good, or bad, impact on the dem. You need to find where it works best. I’d also like to mod mine with a wet/dry or level control along with led.
On another note, I just received a paypal invoice for Ron Neely at Ronsound also know as The EH Man here. It’s an invoice for an original electric mistress that needed repairs that I couldn’t do. The invoice is kinda cheaper than I expected…..I’m praying you got it working good Ron as I was just about to buy another one!

I’m wondering if it’s going to be analog and voiced after the original mistress or the deluxe? Also, is there a trimpot to adjusst the range or depth? The demo posted sounded horrible…but he obviously had it set up with the feedback maxed plus a crappy recording so I still have faith.

I thougt it was gonna suck until I realized he had the feedback maxed. Sounded pretty good when he turned it down to a moderate level though. You can tell the range is set pretty high from the factory though…atleast compared to where I like the range which I usually keep around 7 oclock….6 is no range. I’ll put it around 9 oclock too. If there’s an internal trimpot for range I can possiby see this replacing my DEM. Still waiting to hear a quality demo but lookn good so far.
January 19, 2011 at 8:33 am in reply to: Electro-Harmonix unveils at NAMM 2011- visit us at Booth# 5396 #113903dmc777MemberNo mistress??? It was sitting right there!!
May be the crappy vid but the dmmt did sound closer the real dmm than the boy series. It was brighter…”i’m not going to say anything about the trails until theres a quality video.
I dont get the point of the killswitch inline as he displayed it. U can do Pretty much the same thing palm muting instead of tap dancing. Sure more can be done with it tho.
44 sounded good. Just stupid to demo somethn that we already kinda know what it sounds like tho when u have the long awaited mistress right there.January 16, 2011 at 7:33 pm in reply to: Electro-Harmonix unveils at NAMM 2011- visit us at Booth# 5396 #113824dmc777MemberOops, just noticed the mistress does have the color knob aka feedback. That’s a plus cause I usually set and forget the range aka depth knob. Still hope there’s a trim for it and that it’s analog and voiced off the original or I’ve just wasted all this time posting about it. I REALLY hope it’s just the first nano version with it’s big brother to be released soon with more knobs such as level, blend and stereo outs!

I’d also bet my first born that the nano Mistress is analog
I reeeaaally hope it’s analog and is voiced around the EM and DEM. Hopefully there’s a trim somewhere for the color knob.
dmc777MemberQuote:oh, I haven’t been in this here thread for a while… so a while back (out of curiosity more than anything) I built myself a ‘violet rams head’ using a GGG board… and I have to say it sounds really good. I know it’s not ‘vintage correct’ as such because I used wima box caps and other modern parts but I stuck to the values on the GGG ‘bill of materials’ .. I tried loads of different transistors and ended up using 2N5089’s which sounded the best to me …. the differences between it and the RI’s? the biggest difference is that it still sounds good if you turn the gain down, even right down… and when you turn the tone anti-clockwise it seems to have more midrange than the recent RI’s, less scoop to my ears.here’s some pics of the board and the finished pedal.
I just need to paint some cows on it now!
I have 2 BMP boards I’m about to put together. 1 is a tonepad board and one is a GGG board. I’m thinking about building a triangle and Civil War muff. What VHE values did find worked best in your violet?
I will revert my previous statement that it’s “absurd” to think the vintage ones sell so much because of the looks. But I don’t think they sell so high strictly because of the looks. Sound, collectors market, and looks all play a big role but the sound is the biggest part. Same goes for the vintage green electric mistress. People don’t pay for those for the looks for sure. It’s about the sound that the current rI DEM can’t replicate….though it does get close.
I think to NOT reissue pedals is a bad move for EHX. Personally, I haven’t been too intrigued by anything they’ve released lately except for maybe the freeze although they have come up with some brilliant pedals. Just nothing I would use. They could also reissue the pedals looks and all and sell them for half of what the boutique makers charge. It really doesn’t take alot of time and money to build a big muff. Like Kit said, he could lone them his ramshead or give them the specs on the transistors and other components. Make it true bypass and add an led plus original graphics and could sell them for a minimum 80.00 and still atleast double what they put into it. Or they could sell them for about 150.00 or so and I guarantee they’d sell.

i say get a stereo electric mistress, sell the deluxe and also buy a poly chorus.
Green Mistress=David Gilmours live wall tones and many other tunes of his. More liquidy.
I’m sure if you could find a huge supply of SAD1024 delay ICs somewhere then EHX would consider this. Otherwise, they’d have to do it with currently available chips and it just wouldn’t be a reissue then, would it?
In other words, it’s a no-go.
Yes you’re definately correct about that. They could easily make the DEM board smaller though. Paint it up like the original and I’d be happy haha! BTW Ron-I actually just purchased an original EM with 5200 board that needs to be brought back to life. It appears there were a few mods done to it but I don’t think the Reticon IC is bad. Someone recommended you as a good tech for this project.
September 18, 2010 at 9:38 pm in reply to: Layout Photos of 1978 Electric Mistress with EH 5200-1C circuit board #111488dmc777MemberBump. Anyone have one of these 5200 boards or even an original EM so I can see some gut shots? I just got one like this with the pots wrapped around the side and I’d like to try to get it fixed and figure out what the differences are. Thanks in advance.

Well, today is June 30th. Any idea when that pedal will be in guitar stores?Got mine today along with my Germanium Muff and Headphone Amp.
Opinions?
dmc777MemberQuote:So, this is my first pedal mod EVER so just to be clear here:I think my initial confusion is just coming from not being entirely clear on how a dpdt switch breaks up a circuit.
I want to do the tone bypass mod on my Russian muff. I know I run a lead from one leg of those two components (a resistor and capacitor, I forget exactly which ones right not) together but then……
Could I put the combined lead onto, say, the first lug of the dpdt switch? If that were the case, what other lugs would then be used to reground the two components and cause the tone circuit to function normally?
Also, how is it that these two components are bypassed by being ungrounded if they are still connected to the PCB? Do you clip a leg?
Pardon my ignorance on all this. I haven’t even bought a soldering iron yet.
This should help. Let me know how it works for you. http://www.beavisaudio.com/techpages/BigMuffToneControl/

Those would sell by the ton!Liberty- I haven’t actually bought a pedal since last January myself. Last two purchases were Bass Big Muff and Tone Wicker.
I’ve bought some guitars and amps at flea markets, but I’ve mostly been buying records and DIY stuff. I certainly see the merits in playing with minimal effects, but I still want stuff. My board’s been disassembled for months. I really want to put it back together, but my amp’s in need of a retube and so I don’t feel motivated without my main amp working.
I am kind of interested in the Germanium Big Muff though. If I dig the tones that is. I’m just hoping that it is actually a muff when you take out all the extra bells and whistles under the hood, otherwise it’d be weird to have a Big Muff that isn’t really a Big Muff.
Yes sir! A phase switch is a MUST have when running parallel loops. Especially with EHX pedals mixed with Boss and others. I’m currently building a new buffered parallel blender and just got the schematic to add the phase switch but I can’t get any of it to work. AAAAAHH!
