I have a 73 ram’s head muff that’s quite quite and a 77 Guild Foxey lady ram’s head, both with FS36999s, and neither is really noisy — sure there’s always some, but not too bad. My DAM Ram Heads are as quiet as you can get with such a high gain pedal. OTOH I had a 3034 that sounded like you were standing next to a helicopter and my tone wicker was worse than that. I’ve had a half dozen Hoofs over the eyars and none of them came close to the noise levels of the TW or that 3034. A little buzz is acceptable but the overly loud jet engine WOOOOOOOSH is a deal killer (for me anyway).
I don’t know about any recent influx of use. They have always been popular. I think the reason so many people like them is that, once you learn to tame one, they are awesome sounding pedals.
Yup! The important part (for me anyway) is the “learn to tame” bit I loves the muff.
I have a 76 small stone and mine did the same thing. As was suggested, I went to radio shack and purchased a new switch and it works fine. So it’s probably the switch. Good Luck!
Open the pedal, take out the Color slider switch, open it carefully (pry open the little tabs holding the switch together…carefully don’t break them), try to catch all the bits that fall out on your lap and all over the floor, curse loudly, find the bits that fell on the floor and clean them with contact cleaner — there should be a couple of little brass things that look a bit like staples — re-tension those (bend them a bit) and put it back together again and back into the pedal. See if that helps. Failing that, radio shack sells a replacement switch that will do the job for a couple of bucks.
Weird behaviour — sounds exactly like what happens with Boss aca vs. psa, where the common ground bypasses the stepdown diode, but I don’t think the SS has anything like that. Def sounds like something’s not grounding properly though but you’re getting shared ground through the other pedal.
Get it working before worrying about cleaning it?
Si diode: 1N4148 or 1N914 maybe? Should be able to buy 100 of them for a dollar or so.
Liberty will be bale to tell you if you need more specific than that.
I wonder if someone tried to mod it for bass by removing the first pair of diodes…
What values are the caps?
