Just added this little thing: a Muff Fuzz from 1975 or thereabouts

I think it sounds great…if a tad noisy. Any of you familiar with these? It has some of the worst soldering I’ve ever seen, so I’m going to retouch everything, probably replace the wiring and the jacks. Wondering if it’s be worth replacing the caps too. Any suggestions for taming the noise any much appreciated.

OK, so I now have a 77ish Little Big Muff on the way along with a 90s thin script Sovtek BMP.
I guess I won’t really know what’s in the Little BM until I get it — anyone know it’s a green board, 1977 pot codes, board reads EH1322. That’s an opamp version with a full BMP board and preset tone stack right?

Yah and I pretty much already sold it.
Just wanted to get a ballpark estimate of its value.
I hope the buyer will put some real use to it.

I was going to bid on that, but you pulled it because it was “lost or broken”…?

What do you guys think of the 70s Little Big Muff? I used to have one aeons ago. No idea where it went.
There was a transistor version and an IC/opamp version.
Wondering if I should try to hunt down another one…what say you?

Any love for the late 70s Little Big Muff? They came in transistor and opamp versions IIRC.
Cool little pedals. I used to have one and have been thinking about hunting down another…

Anyone have gutshots of the op-amp muffs? Just curious, I’d like to see the boards, especially the ones with the 3003 board but op-amps instead of transistors.

Echoing the above: Don’t drill it. Don’t mod it. But TB is not a bad idea.
Here’s a helpful pdf with good diagrams: http://www.singlecoil.com/docs/vintage_muff.pdf
    No idea about the noise — I have two 3003 muffs (a v2 ram’s head and a v3 red/black) and they’re both well behaved.
Mine is TB, so let me know if you want gutshots to help with the mod.

You don’t need to replace the switch these switches are good for 30,000 cycles, to fix this problem will cost you 20cents.
Solder a 4.7Meg resistor form input to ground and from output to ground.
That’s from the first silver band to the last silver band on each black plastic jack inside.
This will totally remove any pop.

As I understand it, that will load down your bypass signal and doesn’t apply a pulldown to the coupling capacitors. Pulldown resistors should go on the switch itself.

    1) 70s v2 3003 [RL]amb’s head w/ FS36999s is top of the heap. Awesome tone.
    2) 70s v3 3003 Red/Black graphic w/ BC239C is my backup. Similar but a bit more aggressive sounding. But these things are so variable anyway it could just be the particular two I have and nothing to do with anything.
    3) Late 70s Small Stone … foolishly sold. Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! Yes it sucked tone and yes there was a volume drop but it sounded great. EDIT: Finally got a minty v2 Small Stone. Fantastic phaser.
    4) 90s DMM … sold, too many delays and I still prefer my echoplex
    5) 80s 3034 BMP w/ tone switch. Pales in comparison to either of the 3003s
    6) I was surprised by how good the Tone Wicker is.

I had a green Sovtek muff in the 90s but didn’t like it; too gnarly for me.
Bottom of the pile goes to a nano switchblade A/B box which is a piece of crap. Not properly grounded out of the box, pops on switching, then hums. Pretty useless really. I’ll fix it one of thee days…

I did have a triangle muff in the 80s but didn’t appreciate it at the time, callow youth that I was. It’s long gone.

    I really would like a 2880 or a 16 s delay though, but man they’re expensive.

EDIT: I forgot, I have an older Octave Multiplexer too (not sure, I think it’s same period as the 3034 muff, 80s?). it’s pretty good for what it is, but doesn’t get used much. I also have an old MuffFuzz, which sounds great but is really noisy, and I just got a ’76 Little Big Muff. Odd how the IC stuff sounds good too. And a 73 Little Muff Pi.
trying to fix a v1 Bad Stone too that’s ina bad way.
I had no idea I’ve had so much EHX gear.

My dream muff though, would be a rams head muff. So if anyone is looking to give their away let me know ;)

The [LR]amb’s Head* 3003 w/ FS36999 is awesome, but you can get the later v3 3003 w/ BC239C (red/black graphic) for way less money and they still sound great. Keep your eyes open; sometimes you see people selling those as NYC muffs, but it is a [LR]am’s Head inside…same circuit board even, and the same transistors as later [LR]amb’s Heads.
    (See my pic above)

*Which is is BTW? Ram’s / Lamb’s ? Neither makes much sense anyway, I don’t see any sheep on the pedal. Where did that come from?
(What is that little face thing supposed to be anyway?)

Finally got around to taking some more pics.
So, here’s a couple of family shots of my muffs.

    That’s a v3 3003 BMP with BC239C transistors, a v6 3034 tone switch w/ S2N5088, and the v2 Lamb’s Head 3003 muff with FS36999 I posted earlier.

The 36999s do look a lot like 2N5133s.

Good eyes — I think they are rebranded 2N5133s. No magic mojo faerie dust at all. (Lots of regular dust though).

70s EHX craftsmanship at its best! This thing sounds awesome though (although I did true bypass it).
