It’s funny, until the Billy Corgan thing, you couldn’t give those muffs away. Everyone was all corksniffery about op-amps vs. proper transistors … I sold three of them in the month or so before the Corgan post and had a hard time shifting them. Think I got about $90 each.
They’re cool and all, def have their own sound, but I still prefer the sound of a good mike’s head muffdevnulljpParticipantThose MPSA18s are odd, never seen those either — looks like they’re equivalent to 2N5088 though.
2N5087 is PNP — I’ve seen those in a few Ram’s Head muffs and they sounded great.devnulljpParticipantQuote:so i have a DMM that has the blue and red print with 4 knobs. it recently got a problem. the pedal turns on but i dont get delay. someone told me that i might need a new chip, what do you guys think?Have you tried reseating the chips that are in there already? Also, try setting all the trimpots to midpoint and then follow this: http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=4050.msg23285#msg23285
devnulljpParticipantreplace the electrolytics and the pot and report back…?
devnulljpParticipantIt’s a 2N5088
Config is
Does it need to be flipped around?
EDIT: flipped the transistor around — BOOST!
ThanksdevnulljpParticipantBattery’s good — I tried a few and a 9V adapter via a clip.
Can I test the transistor? (How?)
ThanksdevnulljpParticipantPost pics of what you’ve got. I have some good wiring diagrams for the early (no AC) and later (w/AC) ram’s heads.

Dan Miller does it in the demo heredevnulljpParticipantQuote:sorry i cant help you out here, i do own this pedal, and have done sum repairs on it. but unfortunately the mega volume drop is normal for this unit, there are “mods” to fix it tho.I modded my old v2 and fixed the volume drop. I’m more concerned with getting this one working first though Right now it’s not a phaser it’s a PHUBBA-PHUBBA-PHUBBA-PHUBBA-PHUBBA-er.
devnulljpParticipantHey, Can I cut in? I have a similar issue trying to resurrect a v1 Small Stone. I can’t make out where the wires go from Ron’s diagram…
The one marked pink — does it go to the bottom left lug of the Color switch? Does it share the lug with the wire connecting to the input jack?
I’m presuming the one marked green replaces the green one in the photo?
I wired it up that way to see, and what I get is a kinda motorboat/pulse at high rate that I can turn the speed down but no phasing. It’s more intense with the color switch up…
Any ideas? (I get bypass signal OK).Thanks
EDIT: Using Liberty’s 3PDT diagram, is this right?
Is there still a wire from the input jack to the color switch?EDIT2: I just wired it up as above and I also get nothing in bypass. But with the effect on, all I get is motorboating … a pulse overlaid on the clean guitar signal. Something’s not right over and above the true bypass but my old switch was knackered so it had to be done. I guess I don’t have the switch wired up right? (Is there really two jumpers?)
devnulljpParticipantQuote:I’ve been using Big Muff playing my bass through it and it loses a lot of the lower thrust I like. Is there another pedal you’d suggest instead.OK I did try the Bass Blogger but I didn’t like that pedal – it had not the versatility I would expect from a Bass distortion. has anybody tried the Bass Big Muff – and give me what to expect before bying?
Thanx a million – Stoner rock
Colorsound Jumbo Tonebender! It’s essentially a muff minus a gain stage and you get some clean signal bleedthrough. There’s a few clones kicking around — the Sonic VI is great.(Note, different from all the Tone Bender MkI/MkII/MkIIIs and Vox Tone Bender).
Or try a Green Russian muff.
The DAM Ezekiel is a great bass fuzz, but hard to find and very expensive once you do.devnulljpParticipantQuote:EDIT: UMM i just saw the little spring thing, it looks ok. what can i do to eliminate the “ground noise” then ?My solution was to get rid of it
July 18, 2010 at 9:19 am in reply to: EH1315B – I need to know where the 9Vbatt was connected.. #110321devnulljpParticipantI think:
Black -ve wire goes to the switch at the front
red +ve wire goes to the AC adapterSame as this: http://www.freeinfosociety.com/media/images/4104.jpg
devnulljpParticipantMutron III — closest you’ll get is a Qtron.
Or you could always just go the Stevie Ray Vaughan route seeing as you already have the Strat and Fender amp. -
