Nice BC239C v3 Big Muff on TGP: http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=630490
No affiliation, but I’ve done a good few deals with the seller and he’s a good guy.
I reckon he’ll be open to reasonable offers too (just not insulting low balls).

hey. i ended up getting that v5, i wanted the SD sound plus that huge explosion of the tone bypass. but i have a feeling i might try to get another vintage muff down the line. i think ive been bitten by the big muff bug!

Cool! I think we need a support group though…

I liked the one 3034 I had, although it was super noisy. Higher gain and less complex sounding than any of my others, but it had its uses. I put a noise gate in it to tame the noise and it gave it this nice sputtery gated sound a bit like an old Jen Jumbo or a FZ-1A.
    3034 is the mudhoney muff.

EDIT: Hey smallclone, check your PMs. I sent you a headsup to a v5 1322 for a good price.

    Boss Slow Gear SG-1 maybe?

Although I’ve done a similar sounding ting with a DMM if set right with the feedback on the edge of running away from itself it will build.
Failing that, you want a looper.

Thanks Ron — quick check on orientation. In this pic, C1, C2 and C7 have -ve to the left,C6 has -ve to the right?
    C1 is 10uF, while C2, C7, and C6 are all 1uF…

I put a trimpot as a noise gate in my 3034 it was so noisy, but I’ve got others that are nice and quiet.

Liberty is way more of a tech than I’ll ever be, but that’s weird — sounds like a capacitor dishcarging maybe or a bad trannie? Does it have an LED?
Dumb questions — is there a battery in it? Is the battery good? If you take out the battery and run from an adapter does it change? Is the adapter good?

Yes, the bellhop’s $2 should be subtracted not added.
    $30 (initial payment) = $25 (to clerk) + $2 (to bellhop) +$3 (refund)
(What does this have to do with v3 Big Muffs?)

Not really answering your question, but neither of the v3 BC239C 3003 muffs I’ve had had either the “AC” or Tone Bypass (both ON/OFF switch, although they did have an AC adapter plug), but I have seen one with “AC”, still No Tone Bypass.
I had an EH3003 green etched IC muff though and it had both the AC and Tone bypass and a EH3003B IC with AC and ON/OFF (your Billy Corgan muff).

BTW Kit, your site is great, and just keeps getting better

Did anybody try this yet? I’m intrigued…

    I went with electro-melx method — worked a treat.

as long as you get them clamped with the right amount of pressure you shouldn’t do any damage.

Yep very true. It’s not that there not different. I’m just agreeing that most people buy them because of vintage mojo or because there legendary more so then how they sound. Personally for me the 2000’s russian black box big muff is my favorite of all sound wise.

Curious how many of the old ones you’ve A/B’ed with your black Russian.Maybe you tried a dog vintage with dried up electrolytics or something (or got lucky with the Russian), but I agree with Kitrae about the v2 muff. They sound great. Nothing to do with mojo. I’ve played a few of those as well as triangles, v3, ICs, v6 3034, Sovteks, and NY RIs. My favourites so far are a Guild Foxey Lady, a nice ram’s head and I have one triangle that sounds fantastic with my gear. The couple of black Russians I’ve tried were not that great.
I was kinda excited about hte tone wicker, and it does sound pretty good, but it’s noisy.

Are the pots broken or is it just the shafts?

I’ve got one completely dead pot (I think anyway) — looks like it’s cracked and been epoxied at one of the lugs and doesn’t work. I’ve got another with a dodgy shaft.

Or is there something else that would turn the sustain pot into a volume pot? Turning the sustain down to zero cuts the volume to zero too. And full sustain just isn’t.

    Would these do?
    They look a bit stubby.

    Or these
    They look the opposite

These look kinda small (same as the first ones?)
