The knobs are original. I’ve seen them more often on Frequency Analyzers.

    Thanks for that info!

The knobs point in different directions because of the way the pots are mounted to the board. The Volume and Sustain are soldered to the sides of the board rather than the top edge like the Tone control.

I knew that because I was going to try to correct it only to realize it’s impossible. This is my cousin’s and he told me he bought it in the early 70s. He wants me to sell it for him on eBay but it’s hard for me to do that!

That’s a big range! Another question I had is about the knobs, I have never seen one with knobs like this. They are also set and can only be put on the pots one way but they point all different directions…any insight?

I see what you are saying. I didn’t mean for it to come off sounding like an ass or anything but when I reread my post I kind of got that feeling so I apologize.

I have both and let me tell you they are completely different. The Muff’n is the slightly tipsy classy lady at the bar while the Hot Tubes is the drunk overconfident raging whore.

But in all seriousness, I had my Hot Tubes first and it’s just been sitting around for awhile since I got my Muff’n. I’ll have to get the two out and make some clips for you! I’ll work on it tonight if I get time…

how would you do that (not the mod by the way)

PM me and we will figure it out. I am located in Memphis, TN. I could make it an ebay auction or something if you want? I don’t really know but I’m sure we can figure something out.

I am also wondering this — when my tube zipper is plugged in there is a bright glow coming from inside the chassis where the tubes are. I have an english muff’n and it does not have any sort of light coming from inside, just the filaments in the top of the tubes. is this bright glow normal and just because there are three status lights? another thing is the drive knob is exceptionally tight — anyone else experience this too?

The glow is just an LED for effect. I have a Hot Tubes that has it a my Muff’n doesn’t. As for the tight knobs, my Hot Tubes drive knob is god awful tight as well.

    DS-1 Ultra or Hardwire dist

The DS-1 Modded is going to save you lots of money. Buy a used one and then mod it and you can get it for cheap! I do the DS-1 Keeley/Ultra Mod and can do it for you if you want to save some dough…also along the line of Tube Screamers. I have a TS7 I love (got it for $20 on ebay). Modded it and it’s sweet sounding! Thought I might even try a Burr Brown OpAmp in it instead of the 4558 and see what that will do!

My finished masterpieces. I have the smaller board running into my Epi Valve Jr and the larger board runs to my Line 6 amp. The other pic is my bass setup :)

I’m going to assume you are talking about a Boss DS-1 with the Keeley/Ultra Mod. I have done a few of these for my cousin and a few of his friends. It is a truly amazing mod that will turn the DS-1 into a pedal far beyond it’s price bracket. He is in his mid-50s and has been playing guitar his whole life and he is a tone freak and let me tell you, he loves the thing!

I have a Muff’n and a Hot Tubes. In general, both are semi noisy when cranked but here are some ideas for you to try.

    1. Take off the cover over the tubes and makes sure the screw in between the two tubes is tight! This ground screw being loose can cause all sorts of issues.

    2. In the Muff’n it should have 12AY7 tubes (I saw you say 12AX7 above somewhere), just fyi though I know you probably know this.

    3. I remember talking to another guy who had a noisy tube pedal and it can be due to the power supply/plug in being so close to the tubes in the pedal. He removed the jack from the side and then ran it out the bottom of the pedal instead so it was further from the tubes (if you do this I would suggest just going ahead and hard wiring it!)

These are a few ideas. What effects do you use and what order do you have them in? I actually have a Behringer Tube Monster that I run at the end of my chain that has a built in nose gate so I don’t have these issues but when just using the pedals by themselves they do get quite noisy! Good luck!

It should work fine. I use it with my Small Clone and it’s great. The Godlyke is amazing as I have it hooked up to literally around 20 pedals and they still all work with no hum or noise. It’s crazy good!

I love effects (have some 30 or so pedals) but multi-effects, from my experience, are a waste. I’ve had several different multi-effect units and no matter how you market a bag full of tricks, if the tricks are sh*t then you just bought yourself a big bag of sh*t. If you don’t know any better then the sounds will probably work for you but later on when you start hearing how much better and more personal individual effects can be you will soon learn (once your ear becomes more developed). I found a distortion I am absolutely in love with! It’s the Rocktron Silver Dragon (get one of eBay for half the price!). I have an LPB-1, Hot Tubes, English Muff’n, Tubescreamer, Russian BMP, Dano Transparent Overdrive, and a Behringer Vintage Tube Monster and this Rocktron pedal has made it’s way into my starting lineup. It has so many cool features and the only con is it has no mid control. It has a crunch and a lead side and combines tube distortion with solid state and it makes my Line 6 amp scream. I have too many other effects to get into what other stuff you might like but something like a Worm might be good because it has some really good basic effects (Phase, Tremolo, Vibrato, Etc)…Good luck but you should definitely go try out as many effects as possible and decide what YOU want YOUR sound to be like! That’s the most important thing.

*Oh and for a power supply, try a Godlyke. I have one right now powering two pedal boards by itself and it’s pure and clean!

For Chili Peppers/Funkadelic, don’t overlook the Q-Tron family. Just pick one. I use the QTron + and its my favorite pedal (this week). Rotary speaker effect..I have a Uni-Vibe and its about as good as it gets in the realm of real dollars, and by that I mean an amount of money that the average dude has. Can’t wait to hear some of the tunes.

I totally agree with Sim. I use a Dr. Q and while it is cool it needs more options. Also for a cheaper uni-vibe clone Danelectro makes a vibe that is pretty authentic sounding (two problems: volume jump at first and a couple seconds to ramp up but these are fixable). So now I guess my next two pedals after looking at the posts are going to be a Q-Tron and a Worm!

Righty, so, a band I’m working with is looking for some advice as to gear. The musical style can only be described as a combination of Chilli Peppers type sounds and a little bit of their funkiness, Funkadelic’s jamming attitude, and Hendrix’s brand of rock.

Right up my mother f’n alley!

OD – I’ve got a Muff’n and while it rocks, it is noisy! I also have a Hot Tubes, it rocks but is noisier and no mid eq, I have a Tubescreamer (i’m sure you know what they do)…My suggestion would be to check out the Rocktron Silver Dragon, I have fallen in love with it.
Wah – (RMC Picture Wah. No doubt about it.) – This is a personal preference pedal!
Fuzz – Try out a Russian Muff, it is a really smooth fuzz and is good for maintaining the clarity in your fuzziness.
Phaser – Make sure you get the Nano Small Stone (not the regular one). I use a Behringer Vintage Phaser ($25) and it is awesome and identical to the small stone for the most part.
    Rotary – That’s a tough one…I don’t use these so no opinion.
Delay – I use a Behringer Vintage Time Machine (DMM Clone) and it f’n rocks for $60.

    Good luck!
