alnico357Participant
I have a 22 Caliber I carry for back up. Hey EHX, what I want is a SUPER CLEAN power amp. I can add distortion with pedals. I may be the only one who wants a source of CLEAN power so my wish may never be granted.
alnico357ParticipantUpdate in case anyone is interested: I was very leery of any other power supply since the Mel9 needs its own. I ordered and received two. One is permanently mounted on my pedal board with Velcro. The other I take with me when I remove the Mel 9 for acoustic gigs. This should relieve stress on the mounted PS.
alnico357ParticipantThanks for the help on my PS problem, especially on a Saturday. Unfortunately, a $50 minimum order is required.
alnico357ParticipantWE need a CLEAN amp like the 44. We have hundreds of pedals for distortion. We need an amp with gigable CLEAN power.
alnico357ParticipantI’ve used my Mel9 with a Roland RS-09 string/organ keyboard.
alnico357ParticipantI play my Mel9 with a Taylor/K&K pickup and it sounds nice. I think the Mel9 needs a voltage hit to sound good. If you are finger picking or playing softly the Mel9 may not be getting the voltage spike it needs. The EHX staff may have something to say about this? A compressor could be of benefit.
alnico357ParticipantFor starters, EHX says it won’t track the low E string. I have played my bass with the Mel9 in my living room. I think the cello setting would be great for some stuff. The orchestra setting generates notes one octave above and below (at least) so two note chords on bass would be cool. Tracking was good. The Mel9 likes a good hot signal and bass should supply it. I get some bass gigs now and then & I will take my Mel9 with me to the next one. I think you will like it!
Andyalnico357ParticipantQuote:What I really found working well is to place a foot control volume pedal between the Mel9 effects output and the amp/desk. While the Mel 9 is always on, this allows you to stop, start and swell the mel effects.Great idea! I’ll try it.
alnico357ParticipantI use my Mel9 for acoustic and electric gigs. I have a small electric pedal board and a very minimal acoustic pedal board. The Mel9 is not mounted on either one. I just do what EXH suggests; always give the Mel9 its own included power supply. Doing this I have not had any problems as described.
If I decided to add the Mel9 to a board I think I’d still power it up with its own independent power supply, since EHX says this is the best way.
alnico357ParticipantDR Dan , Your post intrigued me so I got out a mic and a Bushman Delta Frost harp. It sounds wonderful
through the Mel9. Sometimes I play a harp on the flute solo in[em] Hide Your Love Away[/em]. I’d love to play some harp at my next gig through the Mel9.alnico357ParticipantOf course anything goes and any/all combinations of effects can be tried, but I think the Mel9 is best left on its own, with the exception of reverb and compression. I run it separately to another amp while using my regular few effects as always. At acoustic gigs I only use reverb so I run the Mel9 through the same amp and mix with its wet and effect volume controls.
alnico357ParticipantGreg, I run the Mel9 into the bass amp with compressor. I don’t have a free standing compressor to go before the Mel9.
alnico357ParticipantYes Greg I have the answer thanks to Dave Rupert. Run your guitar to an A/B box. One out goes to your regular effects and to your amp. The other goes to the Mel9. Turn the dry signal on the Mel9 all the way down and effects up. Always leave the Mel9 on and switch it and/or your guitar signal in and out with the A/B box. You already mentioned that in your post.
At electric gigs I have run the Mel9 to a Carvin Micro Bass amp with [em]compressor[/em] to an elevated PA speaker. This allows the ethereal sound of the Mel9 to fill the room.
alnico357ParticipantAcoustic gig update: I used the Mel9 in the effects loop of my Red Eye preamp along with a reverb. The signal goes out to the main board and to my stage monitor amp, an Ultrasound AG30. I know the instruction sheet says an effects loop is not the way to go but I had no trouble using my Taylor Grand Concert with K&K pickup. I mainly mixed the acoustic signal with strings fading in. What a great sound!
Holy moly, [em]Spirits in the Material World[/em] sounds wonderful with the Mel9.
alnico357ParticipantI’ve used the Mel9 on two full electric gigs so far. The first one I ran through the PA but couldn’t hear it good because we only monitor vocals. At the second one I ran into my Carvin Micro Bass head with compressor, and into an elevated 10″ 2 way PA speaker. This worked much better.
The orchestra, cello, strings, and low choir are the meat and potatoes for me. I also used the flute setting on an impromptu version of “Can’t You See” since I didn’t bring my flute. The clarinet and brass don’t have much use for me at the moment.
I will use it Saturday night at an acoustic duo gig. I’m loving it! It needs a vibrato control.
