Final update: I used a can of compressed air (used for cleaning computer equipment) and dusted out the potentiometers as well as just making sure that the dust and debris from some years of gigging [that somehow had gotten inside the back] were [gently] cleaned off and now my EHX looks and sounds like new again. Even though the back cover was screwed on, it appeared that the screws had loosened ever so slightly allowing entry of various MUNG and DERBIS from various venues to enter. Ick. Now cleaned.
“Your mileage may vary, do not remove the back cover of your EHX SMMH as it may void any warranty and also may let the magic smoke out. I have some experience with electronics devices so I can work on them safely if necessary.”
aliensporebombParticipantThat makes a lot of sense except at the time everything stopped dead I was standing 8 feet away from the unit. Usually this stuff is pretty bulletproof but it might be time to clean the switches and pots of any dirt/grime/dust since the unit has been in use for a while and not had any real cleaning type maintenance.

Bill, you really should do a solo project using all of this – I know I’d buy it and I suspect a lot of
us out there would too.I keep thinking “what’s he going to do next?”
aliensporebombParticipantBill, that’s just great! Smiling from ear to ear here like a big dummy since I’m a huge Pink Floyd fan and seeing you pull out the electric razor and watching you go to town, just great! I love it.
I think David Gilmour, Roger Waters and Nick Mason (remaining living members of the band) should see the video just to see what you can do.
The portamento parts – beautiful.
I keep thinking “what is he going to do NEXT?”

December 31, 2009 at 9:01 pm in reply to: Electro-Harmonix Effectology, Vol.11 Crystal-Shimmer Effects #105932aliensporebombParticipantI think there should be a “Bill Ruppert Series EHX Sonic Explorer pedal” that would let us do
this kind of stuff all in one pedal instead of needing to hook a bunch of pedals together. It might be expensive but it would sure as heck be cool.
Interesting what rpn. nelson asked though: in my mind this effect seems happy with either
humbuckers or single coils, they both bring out different “sparkly shimmer” characteristics.I’ve got a guitar with darker humbuckers that isn’t quite as happy with this but I’ve got
two other guitars with low to medium output passive humbuckers that seem to shine with this
effect. As long as they’re not the ‘darker’ “sweat hog” type humbuckers. So, give it a shot.
December 28, 2009 at 9:32 pm in reply to: Effectology, Vol. 3: Cello Concerto for Guitar and Effect Pedals #105772aliensporebombParticipantBill is right on how sometimes an analog chorus will do things to a signal that you would never expect.
I had a similar effect once that sounded galaxies apart depending on whether you ran it in mono or stereo.I noticed the best use was using the device in stereo for clean guitars it distorted the signal so it
almost sounded like both a clean guitar and a synth pad at the same time. Sometimes the ‘limitations’
of a device is actually it’s strength for creating evocative sounds.aliensporebombParticipantThe strobe light and photocell effect – brilliant. That really WOULD scare the neighbors.
Very nice take on the Oldfield piece.
I think I want a Pog now, I played with one at the store and I’m going “it never hurts to have too many effects…”
aliensporebombParticipantHappy Holidays indeed!

It sounds wide in stereo BUT is your signal is played back or heard in mono the signals will recombine and the effect will cancel out and vanish!I remember years ago doing a commercial that I used a stereo delay on to bounce the sound around.
It was crucial to the sound and track.
Well I heard the jingle on the AM radio one day and that big delay effect was GONE.
All that was left was this plunky little guitar that was ridiculous sounding !!!
It turns out the delay created its stereo with phase reversal and AM radio is mono.
Poof.. vanishing effects!
I now call it ‘Fake Stereo”.
I always check now before I record a pedal in stereo to see if it is true stereo.
I did find a work around and that is, after you recording a fake stereo effect add 5 to 15 milliseconds of delay to one side and the effect will not vanish if heard in mono.
BillQuote:TIP:an interesting alternative approach for splitting the signal
into two branches (at the “send”-side) would be
using the 2 outputs of a “stereo”-pedal (e.g.: “PULSAR”)
instead of the “Y-adapter”…Bill when doing a session like that do you get any sort of idea of the venue for the ads?
Like “this one is for the tri-state area both AM/FM etc..”That must have been a nightmare to hear the plinky ridiculous guitar instead of the cool delay
effect. I like the idea of adding 5 to 15 ms of delay on one side, interesting – I think mono
gets overlooked a bit these days.December 10, 2009 at 1:50 pm in reply to: Electro-Harmonix Effectology, Vol.11 Crystal-Shimmer Effects #105118aliensporebombParticipantJulian: Then something like a Roland JC-120 would work great since that has four inputs on it,
two for each channel of the amp. Then running that in stereo would be something nobody would
expect out of a regular guitar amp. Great idea!aliensporebombParticipantAs an aside, I’d like to see a MAGIC BOX that allows one to create sounds similar to Bill Ruppert’s effectology experiments in ONE fx unit.
In other words, go from the crystals sound to the orchestral string sound to the led zeppelin electric piano sound.
Those sounds are terrific, evocative, useful. But if you could make it useable in a live situation like kicking in a stompbox that would
be the ultimate. It would be something like a SUPER HOG or MEGA POG. I dunno. Just musing.
OK we’ve gone for faux piano, faux organ and faux dsotm sequencer madness. Thinking:
sax, flute, harpsichord, funky earth wind and fire synth bass?December 7, 2009 at 11:10 pm in reply to: Electro-Harmonix Effectology, Vol.11 Crystal-Shimmer Effects #104963aliensporebombParticipantOnce again Bill inspires us all. I love the crystal effects and the string bits. Gave me some great ideas.
Hi, I’m Todd and I’m a longtime EH user but my latest fave is the Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai.
(creating another thread to deal with what I was posting about previously).
I ponder if it would be possible to create a pedalboard with multiple signal paths with these effects and
if you could go from parallel to series at will? Not necessarily computerized but actually using a series
of prewired effects with “routing switches” to route from series tp parallel and back. -
