So guys… i feel really down today… so i wanted to ask you something

are you where you always wanted to be with your music?

    what were you expecting?

    what were your ambitions?

etc… feel free to express yourself

the thing is… yeah, i’m only 17 (18 is coming soon) but i feel really desperate… i’ve been playing guitar for almost 4 years and people say i’m good… i’m not trying to show off, just trying to tell a story… i have a youtube account with some covers and two functional home projects

so i’m playing alot and i can be really creative… and people apparently like it – i’ve got over 6000 visits on my bandzone.cz profiles (something like MySpace) and like 50 fans… but still – i can’t form a band and play live and make music FOR REAL

I feel really redundant… just sad, really… i mean – my music, guitar – those are the things in my life I can do good… i mean like – i’m good at this… in school, i’m quite good in english and history… yeah, that good i feel about my music… and i want to do something about it. I want to make music, because it feels right to me

so what about you? how did you end up with your dream? are you content?

sorry for the essay… i bet it seems silly to you… but i needed to talk about it and i don’t think my girlfriend would understand me – she is really supportive, but she is not a musician

lol, I wish! from about the age of 13 onwards I just wanted to be a famous rock star…. needless to say it didn’t happen!

……..as I got older I realised that it happens to very few people and there are thousands of musicians all over the world that never get any real recognition. I formed my first ‘proper’ band when I was 20/21 we played for a couple of years and were getting big local turnouts.. it was great fun and I realised that as long as I was playing it didn’t matter to me if it was to 50,000 people or 5 people in my local pub.

…why can’t you form a band? I’ve realise these last few years (because I’m desperate to get out playing again) that it won’t fall in your lap, you need to go out and find people and keep on trying if it doesn’t work out with them.

hehe… i don’t think i want to be a famous rockstar… like really BIG one. It’s so much pressure and so much time away from oyour beloved ones… i’m not that type of a person

anyway i don’t get it… i live in a third biggest city in czech republic and i just can’t find people to play with. Either we can’t get along personally or there are no people that would want to play even similar music as i do or it just doesn’t work because there isn’t that “magic”… you know what i’m talking about… your a musician :D

anyway… i must admit that in past few weeks i stopped looking because i’m going to graduate next year and i’ll try to get to university in other city (second biggest… i have some friends there and i think there could be a band someday… ) and to form a band for a year isn’t very good idea i think

i just want to play… i must admit that i play in a… um… pop-rock chorus… but we almost don’t perform at all so it’s not so cool… but when we do, it’s awesome (like twice a year i think)

(you know… making music alone can sometimes be very frustrating)

yeah, I know axactly what you are saying (on all points) … I’m having trouble finding the right people too. I guess at some point i’m either going to have to compromise on the type of music I want to play or on the people in the band, probably the latter as I’m hooking up with a bass player friend who really wants to do something, he’s cool but he can be a little difficult at times in a band situation, but we’ll see how that goes.

I’d just like to be able to make enough money doing something (whether writing, music, or building pedals or amps or guitars) to support a family and to keep playing guitar til I die. I don’t want to be all about doing big tours, I’d just like to write, record, and play out a bit.

i strongly agree with Julian, i wanted to play out all the time, maybe not a rock star but be able to preform publicly at least. now a days i got a family and its hard to find time to do anything when there’s family , work, other responsibilities let alone find time to form another band.

so as long as i could find a way to make my hobby a money maker to support family, that would be awesome! like building my guitars or sum thing.

I’m 30 now and i went thrue the phase your in now at that age and it comes and goes, i wouldn’t worry about it to much.

things change a lot, ive always found that new equipment gets me creatively inspired, when i feel like im burnt out with nowhere to go. lol

in my experience with bands, it is possible to play along with anyone, but there will be a few people (i have found 3 in my life) that you really, really click with….cant explain why, you just know, and so do they.

    just keep playing!

Same here! I have a lot of friends who play, but none that I mesh with enough to gig with. We jam a lot and have a great time, but not gig worthy type stuff. Most of us have been paid musicians at one point or another, but just don’t vibe.

BTW, I have always wanted to be a RockStar, but don’t think it fits into my lifestyle anymore, being a single dad. But, my daughter can be one if she wants! She is 4 and I am already getting her into guitar and drums. I didn’t start until I was 16. Hell by the time she is my age, she can be a Guitar Hero!

Thanks, guys… i really appreciate that :) it’s not a true purpose of this thread but feel free to post your opinion

friedjesseradio: ok, so… i’m recording in Cubase. I write drums in guitar pro (yeah, flame on… but i can do whatever i want there, really) and then it’s fed to a drum machine VSTi in cubase – i was using EZDrummer but since Consciousness i’ve been using Baterry 3 with carefully picked drum samples.

The early guitar stuff was recorded through Tech21 Sansamp GT-2 into line in… then i sold it and i started to use impulses. Almost every effects (besides some reverbs and ring mod in Bonnie… oh yeah and the synth-like sound in Life as we know it) is made by me and my pedalboard (i think)

the bass used to be programmed but with Opus dei, i started to record it on my own… the same thing is with the keyboards

about the Pink Floyd influence… people more often say that it reminds them of Porcupine tree (well… they are my main inspiration) but that’s nice! thanks

that’s my way to express myself and be creative, but without actual playing live or at reherseals, it’s not as it could be

i really want to be in a band. i’m currently trying to start a band with my friend who sings, but he isnt really a great singer and doesnt really know what he’s doing. plus he spends all of his money on cds and dvds and then complains he doesnt have any money for a mic or any music gear. i know a lot of people who play the drums and bass, but i’ve asked every one of them if they want to put a band together, and all of them said no. i don’t want to be in a really big band and sell out stadiums, i just want to perform music live and have people listen to the music i create.

You know, if luck doesn’t come your way the first time round, sometimes it helps sticking with something that’s not quite right just to get in the flow of things. My first bands weren’t the best, but by playing with them, I learned a lot and got to know the people with whom I enjoy playing and have a great time now.

As far as I go, had 1 band that didn’t work out. Now I’m with another one, that we did a couple of rehearsals but I don’t like the drummer. On both I play bass. And finally I have this good friend who plays the guitar and we both want to make a band, or something like so, both on guitar but we need a bassist and a drummar, but there is no hurry. With this guy, oh man, all the improvs that we make are so magical.

I think I’m gonna put the music above the people from now on…… I mean Johhny and Joey Ramone didn’t like each other, they had opposing political views and a very different personalities, but when they hit the stage none of that mattered because they were the ramones and magic happened.
