I love the vintage enclosures and use several still today, however, to be honest, for live playing the XOs are light-years ahead, especially when one has several pedals going at the same time…IMO XO. no contest.
i vote for the XO. they brought EH into the next century. also i would rather see the input and output plugs on top. the layout is fantastic (i absolutely adore the “start/stop” knobs) and they are sturdy!
and of course – for an effect junkie like me – there’s more space for putting more XO’s on the board! great.
but anyway – don’t stop doing some old fashioned pedals – they are EH and some of them might not work as XO.
hope for a good analog start/stop-flanger with “nearly thru zero” soon!
I, too, can understand why they’re making the move to the XO sized boxes, but I think they should keep the vintage boxes and make vintage versions of all their pedals, albeit in smaller quantities. I have more-or-less an all EHX board, and they would all be classic versions if EHX did this.
It’s strange that guitar players are so resistant to change. Left to our own devices we would all be playing blues licks on a pawn shop strat through an old valve amp that looks like it’s been dragged behind a truck for a few miles. THATS what ‘tone’ is baby!
I also like the giant knobs on the old classic pedals. there big enough that if i want to tweak something live I can turn the knob with my foot.
Exactly I started to do some foot tweaking on my SMMH last week while in the middle of (trying to play) a solo….not a good idea. The XO knobs either don’t respond or jump forwards or backwards quite a way, relatively, which does change the sound a lot. Obviously this was not part of the design anyway, unlike the Maestro efforts. The knobs on the classic Deluxa enclosures do respond well to foot treatment.
so, now i have a classic enclosure and a XO pedal ,so i can compare…
the XO seems practical in the terms of size. however, as mentioned before, the jacks on the sides aren’t really helping to safe some free space…
i must say that even if my classic enclosure White finger takes up as much space as Jekyll&Hyde;+Boss PH-2 TOGETHER, it’s way more awesome. jacks on the top, nice design and god… it has pile of character!
to be honest, i don’t like how is EHX making everything smaller and modern. why? because it goes hand by hand with this stupid normalization…
if a see an old box by EHX, i KNOW that it’s made by EHX. when i see a nano boxes i’m like “wtf is that? something by MXR? something boutique? oh no, it’s that NEW EHX…”
in my opinion, the brand lost a lot of it’s signature look and character… unfortunately – it was inevitable i guess

I think you are right with all your points there… and unfortunatly I think it was something that EHX had to do if they wanted their pedels to appeal to buyers outside of the ‘retro’ or ‘vintage’ markets because that’s how people saw them.
Yeah, I must admit that the new ones sure look more modern it can attract some new users, for sure – and that’s good, nt because of the money, but because of the fact that more people can discover how cool EHX effects are
anyway… even if I’m not focused on the image… when i look to my gear, i want to look on some really nice things the functionality is on a first place but if it looks like rubbish, i don’t love it so much… i don’t say the new enclosures look like rubbish!!! but i just like the old ones more
(and by the way… the effect that are completely new, not just rehoused – Cathedral, SMMH, POG2… they are looking really great!!! )
(PS: the boss company… yeah, true visionarists… the started with the whole “normalization in pedals” a few decades ago )
I prefer the vintage style big boxes, but if I were playing in a band and gigging every night I would want the smaller enclosures simply for space. I think you need both, though I don’t think the nano boxes look as cool as the older stuff, but I’m old
