Since there was a bunch of back and forth in another thread on this I thought there should be a poll.
XO enclosures are the newer, smaller, die cast enclosures — like the nanos, bass muff pi, and SMMH.
Vintage enclosures would include the sheet metal boxes — like the big muff pi, deluxe electric mistress, small clone.
Just cast your vote, speak up if you have a reason to like one over another. I think tube pedals and russian models are in a league of their own, so I’m not including them in the poll — though they do have a special place in my heart
June 7, 2009 at 8:38 pm #97504Fender&EHX4everModeratorI love the vintage enclosures for nostalgic and sentimental reasons, but I’m glad that EHX is discontinuing them. There are enough used and NOS ones floating around out there on eBay to satisfy guys like me. In order for EHX to keep up with the market, they’re doing the right thing.
June 7, 2009 at 9:07 pm #97505toescantalkMemberI don’t like the nanos. They look really ugly to me. But I don’t care about space on a board.
Some of the new enclosures are pretty cool though e.g new micro synth.

June 7, 2009 at 10:12 pm #97507CostchParticipantYou know me; always in favor of the vintage. If anybody is aware of preferably new Mini Q-Tron, please let me know. Oh yeah, the reason. Mojo. Yeah. That elusive, vague concept that most folk aren’t aware of as long as they have their convenience and cookie cutter tone. Here’s a digression: Why do most guitarists strive to emulate the tone of well established “celebrity” guitarists rather than create their own (or at least try)?

I do know that my interests have changed over the years — from no FX, to as many wacked out effects as possible to make bizarre noise, to, well, wacked out EHX/only analog effects — mostly fuzz. I’ll probably continued to change more even though my wallet hopes I don’t.
So, maybe people strive for an authenticity they find in products endorsed by (or products that claim to be used by) insanely famous musicians?

June 8, 2009 at 7:39 am #97530cabomanoParticipantI prefer the die cast housing of XO’s and nanos. It’s sturdier and looks better IMHO. And board real estate matters to me as I rarely have the luxury of a larger stage.
June 8, 2009 at 2:20 pm #97539julianModeratorXO. More utilitarian. Though my aesthetic side would like to have both.
June 8, 2009 at 6:04 pm #97551electro-melxModeratormmm…
I don’t mind either way, I like my classic big muff but I have no problem with the diecast either. I’m glad things like the soul preacher have been reissued and I doubt there was any plans for that until ehx made the move to diecast. So in general I think it was a good move even though I prefer the look of the old ones.

June 9, 2009 at 5:31 am #97574SupremePancakeMemberI like the XO casing better. They just look prettier. The only downside is that you really can’t mode them.

not alot of people have ambitions beyond emulation, unfortunately. it’s all a matter of misguided dreams; for some reason people think that being the next rolling stones involves sounding exactly like the rolling stones. they fail to realize that those records have already been made, and even though it’s still easy to appreciate and enjoy them, they are – in this day and age – devoid of any real artistic merit.
for the same reason that someone who gets into metal invariably grows a horrible beard and stops playing or listening to any other kind of music, someone who gets into the beatles tries to write the proper followup to Abbey Road. hence my official formation of “The Society to Let Music Die” aka “The Committee to Keep the Past in the Past.” Now accepting members.
on a similar note, i like the big boxes but ehx has already made those pedals. it’s time to move forward.
June 9, 2009 at 12:36 pm #97588CostchParticipantI suppose that the link between music and art is wearing quite thin. Terrible shame, that. I rue the day that it is completely severed. It’s getting pretty close. Spot on, John J.
