I recently started using wound 3rds on my guitars, I really like the feel….I got them in the same gauge as my regular 3rd strings (.018) so they aren’t any thicker but they are a lot flexier I always felt that the plain .018’s felt a little too thick and stiff.
anyone else using or tried wound 3rd’s?
I recommend giving them a go if you use medium/heavier gauge strings…
I got mine from ‘stringsdirect’ in the UK (they also ship to europe), I’m using the D’Addario nickel wound singles along with my regular Rotosound 11 sets….I don’t think I’ll ever go back to a plain 3rd’s they feel fantastic and seem to be more ‘in-tune’ when fretting at the first and second fret playing open chords.

as you can see in the link they go right down to a .017 so anyone who’s using 10’s or above should be able to get a suitable wound 3rd to try, I’d definetly recommend trying it out.
January 2, 2009 at 7:22 pm #90002julianModeratorI’ve thought about it, but I thought it would make it sound darker, and I really like using that G for those wild accents
January 2, 2009 at 7:37 pm #90003BlueSteelParticipantI was thinking about getting wound 3rd strings, but i decided to just stick with the unwound kind.
January 2, 2009 at 8:06 pm #90004electro-melxModeratorwell for the price of a string give it a try sometime and let me know what you think, I really can’t notice much difference in sound, but the difference in feel is quite dramatic. I guess you’ll either love it or hate it.

January 4, 2009 at 2:19 pm #90061mrbrownstoneMemberi think the wound 3rd string is very good way to balance the tension among the strings and the neck, thus, solving the “dead g string”. i have seen guitars perfectingly set up (intonated, truss rod adjustment, fret dress and leveling) and still the 3rd string some was dead at the 8/9th fret, until wound 3rd strings were placed.
January 4, 2009 at 4:18 pm #90064Dr. MattModeratorI played a Rickenbacker 325 with the wound G, but much of the reduction in tension was probably due to it being a 20″ scale guitar (VERY small) as the other strings felt pretty loose too.
January 14, 2012 at 3:22 pm #116753Mr.GrimMemberstrange i never thought of this, i will need to give it a go!
odd i don’t have a wound G string all ready, i use Ernie Ball custom gauge 2627 Beefy Slinky’s.
11-15-22p-30-42-54 basically its like having 11 gauge strings but the incline is so drastic that by the time you get to the low E your now in 12 gauge.
Funny my low E on my guitar is bigger than the G string on my bass!
