I am running a Fractal Audio Axe Fx 2, I am about to make the switch to a solid state poweramp. With the Fractal will sound great with SS power as the tube emulation is AMAZING, the back up for my Fractal will either be a Boss GT-Pro or a Line 6 Pod X3. I have had an EHX Black Finger for several years that I never use, I am wondering if I can use it in-line between the Boss or Pod and SS poweramp to help with a little bit of tube feel in that rig? The Fractal won’t need such but the Boss and Line 6 will i fear. Any tips on settings would be VERY appreciated.
The Black Finger is a compressor & although I love mine, I don’t think the tubes color the sound enough to make a big tone difference. Having said that, if you need compression & are willing to spend some times finding the right tubes, you may be able to coax enough color out out to make for a pleasing result. However, I don’t think it will replace the sound of a tube amp.
I would agree with whoever replied first stating that the Black Finger will have a good tone, getting a bit of tube saturation while at the same time does not replace having a tube amp. You would just have to mess with the Black Finger in order to see if you really like how it works. If you want more of a pre amp sound rather than a compressor I would suggest the English Muff’n since it is still a pedal that has pre amp tubes. I have seen a couple scenarios like this form buddies and I tell them about pre amps and tube pedals
Cheers
