I recently bought the White Finger (the new die-cast case version) and I have to say that it’s so good for clean and overdriven tones that it’s definitely a “stay-on” pedal. I had tried many compressors only for them to buzz a lot, suffer from volume drop or merely make the clean sound worse but this really is something else. Once you’ve had it dialled to what you want (it takes a little white but keep at it) and you play some things the difference between your clean sounds is like night and day.
I normally use it on LED mode when using it with a Fender Stratocaster due to the quicker attack sensitivity along with the squash function and I have to say that it pretty much covers the bases so well. I’m using a JCM900 (not famed for a clean sound) and even this is singing! I also have been using it for recording other instruments and voices; in this instance i use the Lamp mode on synths and voices due to the longer notes.
Before buying this I tried the Keeley 4-knob compressor, a modded CS-3, a Soul Preacher and a Black Finger and the White Finger sounds better (and more affordable) than the Keeley and the CS-3 Mod, whilst the Soul Preacher is a little noisy and the Black Finger was a little too expensive and seemed to have the same features as the White Finger.
In short, you should definitely try one out if you get the chance – Even cheap guitars end up sounding pretty good!
January 20, 2010 at 1:52 am #106611Mr.GrimMemberhmmm, i guess i got lucky or sum thing, because i have allways had the same great results from my tube Black Finger as well, clean, quiet, good compression. and i do keep it on all ways.
i say i must be one of the lucky ones, because i have heard many others having noisy problems with there units, or tubes dont glow, ect….. perhaps its sum thing to do with the tubes? and after i had mentioned that before to others they state that there unit is brand spankin new, but there’s always the chance that, tubes are fragile….so maybe the unit was miss handled during shipping or warehouse storage?….who really knows?

The Black is more my taste, slightly saggy, dark, and woody sounding to me. I prefer it for general use.
The White is more glassy and smooth. I like to use it for smoothing out envelope filters and wahs, or for sustaining leads.January 20, 2010 at 12:13 pm #106624merdujaponMemberDon’t get me wrong, I LOVE the EH tube pedals as I have a Tube Zipper (and yes, they’re a little noisy due to them being really sensitive to what your room power supply is) but the main constraint for me was simply the price and the fact that I’ve had no less than 3 PSU’s break on my TZ. I’ve been told that the Black Finger is perfect for recording vocals though, so that may be an excuse to get one at a later date. The WF is the smoothest comp i’ve heard though, hence the choice.
Will EH make any more tube pedals any time soon? I think a tube phaser would probably sound great.
January 20, 2010 at 5:36 pm #106637Mr.GrimMemberooohh…..tube phaser! it never crossed my mind, but now, dam that would sound so nice and dreamy, now im hooked on a non existent pedal…thanks!
January 20, 2010 at 6:11 pm #106641DarkAxelParticipantyeah, the white finger is awesome, one of my best purchases ever BUT i don’t use it for rhytm distorted guitar, because it steals some of the agression of the sound… sustaining leads, nice fattened up clean tones… yeah, that’s something else!

in fact i’ll see if it’s on google images….
he’s done all-sorts of tube pedals that were never taken on by EH. the tube vibe is either a vibrato or a univibe. i forget what he mentioned on the bulletin boards.
edit: had to re-host the photos.

i also have the same white finger as you and i think its fantastic. its always on for me to. even when using a les paul and a tele, they both sound fantastic. really good.
and i tried out the super comp, dyna comp, sou preacher, guyatone, black finger compressor, but didnt try out the white before i got it, but from what id heard it suited my sound better and it does. good review btw

However, I’m selling due to the fact that its not practical on my board because of the AC power (that is unless VD Labs kicks it into gear and releases the PP Versa). So, now that I’m compressor shopping I will definitely be trying out the White Finger.
February 13, 2010 at 9:24 pm #107466DarkAxelParticipantAs cool as it is – i’m selling
because i got a new pickup installed, DiMarzio Chopper T replaced DM Area T… i usually used WF for making this crazy attack on Area T less harsh and ear-piercing or to fatten up the middle position… but the Chopper has very pleasant attack even if struck hard and the middle position is really fat enough and colourful enough on it’s own
warning: bad comment ahead – i think that with this pickup, White Finger is making my guitar sound worse than it actually sounds.however it’s a cool box and sometimes it can really compliment the overall sound of an instrument
