Okay, now that I’m squared away on buying a Tube Zipper, I figured I’d ask the advice of the forum on another matter.
I used to own an NYC Big Muff Pi. I found it worked great for doing the J Mascis wild trem rocking solos, but I wasn’t really happy with the way it swallowed my chords (especially high end notes) for rhythm playing. So I sold it. But, after going through a number of boutique fuzzes, I’ve found that I still miss the lead sound I had with the Muff, so I figured I’d buy another one. Should I go with another big box NYC, or is there another version that has the really wild fuzzy character and smooth sustain of the NYC, but works better for chords? Black Russian? Bass Muff? Little Big Muff? Tone Wicker (has anyone here actually played this one yet?)?

December 9, 2008 at 7:19 pm #88793electro-melxModeratorI don’t know what to say because I thought the BMP RI was the best for chords! I found it the brightest of the current pedals, but yeah maybe a wicker will be the one…..unfortunatly, they haven’t hit out shops here yet.
the bass muff might work good for chords too because of the clean blend.

yeah, I’ve also heard that the NYC was the best for chords, but it just didn’t do it for me. Maybe, my chord stuff just doesn’t mesh with the Muff sound? I’m mainly looking for a Muff for leads anyway, since I already have a couple fuzzes that I like for rhythm/chords, but I figured it might be a bonus if I could find a Muff that did it all.
As for the Tone Wicker, I can’t wait to hear it. Can it get an NYC-type sound in addition to all the new tones?

Yes it can. This is the most versatile Big Muff yet. You will be pleased. It will answer a lot of questions you may have about distortion. Kind of like the birds and the bees.

When should it be making it’s way to my neighborhood EHX store?

We have released all the backorders and have shipped all the Big Muff Tone Wiickers to all those who have pre-ordered them. You should check your local guy and see if he’s ordered it. If not, he can place one and you should have shortly. It Sells for $89 US.
Good Luck and Keep making Noise!

cool. But this is definitely a pedal I want to try before buying. I just don’t know what to expect (though that is rather exciting). I guess I’ll just have to be patient for awhile longer before it turns up at one of my local music stores.

You should definitely try it out first. EHX makes a lot of great boxes, but not all of them are appropriate for everyone. They are created to help the player create his own sound, that’s really it. Bother your local guy to get one on order and try one out. After reading what you wrote, this might be the box for you. It won’t suck up your chords, it will enhance them.
