Bauhaus are one of those bands that seems to have about as many compilations as they do original studio releases (4 full length, 1 live, and a dozen e.p.s). The compilations are good for gleaning the choice cuts; but if you’re like me, you like to hear the original albums as the artist intended.
In the Flat Field, as melx said, is their first full length album. It’s a total demon of an album, foreboding and grim. Great stuff, though definitely the darkest and heaviest one of their catalogue.
My personal favorite is probably Mask. It shows a lot of their range, from industrial, to new wave, to funk, to ambient. Very creative album.
The Sky’s Gone Out is my second favorite. This album is just plain creepy, and has all the atmosphere of a 1920s German silent film. Their cover of Eno’s “Third Uncle” is brilliant.
If you like Love & Rockets already, Burning from the Inside is Bauhaus’ last, and it reveals the lighter psychedelic seeds of L&R.
January 21, 2009 at 12:57 pm #91321GoldengloveMemberThanks! Guess I’ll give the albums a listen since I’ve got a cold and can sit at home for a week doing non-productive things
January 21, 2009 at 1:09 pm #91322Just curious — when somebody suggests an album, and if you want to give it a listen, what do you actually do?
As for me, I mostly use Rhapsody, and I quite like it.
January 21, 2009 at 1:15 pm #91323GoldengloveMemberWe have a big Russian illegal site, plus there’s Demonoid. I know it’s not nice, but we don’t have good CDs in shops – just a cover and the CD, no lyrics, nothing, and I buy lotsa CDs when I go abroad.
Last year, when I was in Finland, I bought “Zeitgeist”, only to see the deluxe edition (the one with the 70-page booklet) in a shop nearby. Had to buy it too.But in fact, I buy/download new music maybe five or six times a year, I usually have enough stuff to keep excited. Dark Cabaret bands are awesome, btw
Also, I enjoy listening to NIN when I’m writing or trying to relax – may seem strange, but it works.

It kinda depends…I’m lucky because I have a few friends with massive music collections and they all like quite a varied mix of stuff, so usually I’ll know someone who owns said album (especially if is a classic album) so I’ll just ask them to do me a copy, or have a listen when I round their house.
if it’s a new band I usually pop along to the bands website/myspace page and have a listen to see if it’s something I’d like….I can usually tell pretty instantly if it’s a band I’d be interested in.
although, I’m kind of at a point where I don’t think there is much left to discover….which is kind of sad, whenever I start a ‘recommend me some music’ thread it’s almost 100% stuff I listen to already or don’t like much.

I look up a few songs on YouTube first. The audio is terrible, but I rarely listen to music based on audio quality. I’m all about the song-writing and the general impression. If I don’t like it lo-fi, chances are I won’t like it hi-fi either.
January 21, 2009 at 1:59 pm #91326GoldengloveMemberDunno about YouTube – when Death Magnetic came out, I decided to give “All Nightmare Long” a listen, since everyone was praising the song, and though it was mediocre crap. Then I bought the CD and it turned out to be great.
January 21, 2009 at 4:12 pm #91331julianModeratorThere is still plenty to discover Melx. PLENTY. There were some pretty good albums out in 2008 by some new bands. Have you heard Sic Alps, No Age, or Fuck Buttons? They’re all pretty good.

As for me, I actually finally managed to find a niche within Jazz that I like. I’ve periodically tried to like Jazz several times over the years, but nothing ever clicked. But apparently, I really like free/avant-garde from the ’60s, such as Albert Ayler, Pharaoh Saunders, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Ornette Coleman, etc.
So keep looking & listening!

Miles Davis – ‘Round about Midnight. For me it’s perhaps one of the best jazz albums ever.
P.S. That’s what I like Last.fm for, since it gives lists of artists similar to the one you’re listening to right now. Some interesting stuff pops up frequently.
January 21, 2009 at 5:16 pm #91335electro-melxModeratoractually the last band I saw that I thought were really great were ‘pendulum’ I went with a mate because he bought me a ticket…and they were really great.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=WZEfgLt9_dE
although it’s nothing like what I usually listen to, they were exciting and I really like what they are doing with electronic stuff….they actually gave me that ‘hairs standing on end’ thing that I rarley get anymore….they actually looked like they were having fun too!!
….like Scott said about the Jazz thing, I think I really need to find a whole new genre to listen to, all the best punk bands have been and gone, same for Alt. rock, indie and whatever, I can’t see anyone is doing anything that hasn’t been done before in those areas, I’m craving something new and exciting.

Pendulum has some great songs.

January 21, 2009 at 5:40 pm #91339GoldengloveMemberNo problem. And call me George – on UG, the Goldenglove nickname was mutilated in a very perverse way until some people began to know as Goldenshower.
