It’s fun to read down this thread — a lot of my faves are listed (though, imho, the funk/soul world remains underrepresented, so I’ll toss in: Parliament, Funkadelic, Sly & Family Stone, James Brown, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Frankin, etc.)

It’s also neat how many of these bands have iconic EHX connections (perhaps most obvious are Screaming Trees and Mudhoney, who named themselves or albums after EHX) — but, just from those listed above, there are plenty of obvious EHX connections to Beck, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Marilyn Manson, Radiohead, ZZ Top, David Bowie, The Ramones, Smashing Pumpkins, White Stripes — and I’m sure you could help add more connections…

And Sonic Youth- Thurston has used a Sovtek Big Muff for a long time, Lee has a microsynth, and Kim uses a vintage Hot Tubes.

    :)

Thurston said it is going to have a mix of a Black Metal and Wipers influence. :D

Black Metal influenced Sonic Youth? I wanna hear it even more now…

Who knows how it will translate, what things they might have borrowed. I’ll have to look it up, but I think he said it’s partly the lyrics.

Here are some vids of songs that could be on it. Mars is pretty cool. No Way is alright. I can’t wait to hear nice recordings.

I really like ‘rather ripped’, but that ‘destroyed room: b-sides and rare’ left me wondering why the hell I had just spent £12 on it. :D

You know, of all the SY albums I own I’ve only bought 2 of them, the rest are from torrents.LOL I usually only buy albums of my favorite bands and even though i love SY they aren’t in my top 3 favorite bands.
    My top 3 would be
Kinski (i bought all their albums)
Earth (same, I’m a little disappointed with their latest few albums, I prefer the older distorted stuff)
    Nirvana

I need to listen to more funk, soul, and motown. I like a lot of hits, but I haven’t found anything that moves me on an album basis.

    I’d suggest:

    Funkadelic, “Maggot Brain”

Sly & Family Stone, “There’s a Riot Going on”

    Otis Redding, “Dictionary of Soul”

Aretha Franklin, “I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You”

    Al Green, “Call Me”

    Stevie Wonder, “Talking Book”

I could go on, but (imho)that’s a pretty solid start…

    Rush
    Roger McGuinn
    The Byrds
    Iron Maiden
    Black Sabbath
    Kings X
    The Beatles
    XTC

I could go on and on….but that’s my tops.

I’ve been recommended Maggot Brain before. I need to check it out.

A big thanks for that awesome video, Scott!
And I read an interview with Slipknot recently – they said that all the weird sounds on the “Iowa” album are not synths, but just a guitar through an Electric Mistress, and sometimes through a Big Muff into a Memory Man.
    Also, Deftones are uber-cool.

Of the albums I listed, Maggot Brain is the most guitar oriented — and the guitar solo on the title track (imho) is one of the very greats.

If I had to choose one artist above the rest, I suppose I’d choose The Beatles. I can’t imagine life without them.

In general, I’m all about melodic UK rock – from The Beatles to The Who to Pink Floyd to David Bowie to Brian Eno to The Police to U2 to Cocteau Twins to Radiohead, and everything in between.

And my favorite USA bands tend to be the ones that sound like UK rock – like Big Star, The Cars, Tom Petty & Heartbreakers, Guided By Voices, and Sea & Cake.

My favorite era of music would probably be the era from 1977 to 1984 – Disco, Post-Punk, New Wave, Power Pop.
