Hi, I’m a bass player. just ordered some new EH pedals cuz my BossGT6B went up in smoke due to a meeting with beer LOL. anyway, I ordered the Black Finger tube compresser, Memory Toy, Steel Leather expander and Enigma Q Balls. I will run these into my Sansamp PSA 1.
question is, what is the best way to run these pedals. should I put them before the preamp? or in the preamp effects loop? or a mix of each?
The general rule of thumb is gain based before pre-amp and time-based in the loop.
So, I would put the memory toy in the loop, and the rest before. I think the enigma first, since distortion or compression before a filter tends to dull the envelope response, and limit the playing dynamics.
I actually tried this recently with my new (used) 1st gen Q-tron and my sansamp vt bass deluxe. When the Q-tron was in the effects loop, it was really hard to get it to behave, since I was pumping more gain in it then it was probably calibrated for. Putting it before the pre-amp allowed a lot dynamic expression.
As far as the Black Finger and the Steel Leather, I haven’t played around with either of those, and my understanding is that the Steel Leather is a kind of “anti-compressor”, so you might have a fight on your hands if they’re both on. Let us know who wins!
ok, cool. I will try that order. as far as the expander and compresser goes. it will take some trial and error to find the setup for them. years ago DBX use to have a comp/expander combo rack that worked great. so it should work with two pedals, just have to find the setting that will allow them to work together.
