    I’ve got a Big Muff with EH-1322 on the board and XX778XX on the pots. From what I read its a version 4 or 5 op-amp from the years ’77 to ’80? And with the pots from what I’ve read they might be from ’77 or ’78? It’s got an older stop box so from what I know it’s not true by-pass. Other info I know, it kills batteries so you gotta unplug it when not using it.

    I have no idea about electronics and am wondering why all the pics I’ve seen have an orange battery shaped piece off the board circuit where mine has a square green piece. If your into electronics and this pedal you should be able to tell what I mean and hopefully answer this.

    I loaned it to a friend for a year and he returned it with the 9v- detached. I need to re-solder it but that’s not an issue.

    I brought it to a local guitar shop a few years ago and the guy offered me $80 Canadian for it. He told me it was a mid 80’s clone but from what I researched today that’s incorrect. I love it and would never let it go but I am looking for more information on approximate year. . . AND if I’m lucky enough to own a much wanted classic :-)

    It’s a 1978 model at the earliest.

    I replied at Harmony Central with a question: That because it has a Tone-Bypass instead of an On/Off switch?! Or something like that?

    Just so everyone knows I’m not trying to advertise another forum. I probably should of posted here first anyways.

    Its a 1978 version 5 opamp muff.

    Thanks Ned. I really thank you for your help. I was just getting ready to solder the 9v- back on after the daily news.

    Like I said, not planning on selling it but I am curious as to what I have.

    This last question might be dumb but I’m going to ask why it’s a ’78 and not a ’79/’80?

    Also, I know this kind of stuff is all preference but is this a popular version of the Muff? I’ve always loved it and played it on a solid state (Peavey Express 112) and am planning on getting a VOX AC15cc.

    Because the pots have 78 on them, the code goes like this 13778XX the XX is the week of the year the 137 is a code for CTS brand pots and the 4th and 5th numbers are the year.

    cool. I just read somewhere that sometimes older pots could have been used for newer Muffs (i.e. ’79/’80) but I’ll take your word for it!!!

    Yea I wrote that too but generally speaking what ever the pots say is a good example of what year it is. There’s bound to be some overlap and the end/start of the year but I would be fine dating it as a 78 version 5.

    Wow. a ’78. I’m impressed. I was a little pi**ed when the guitar store owner said it was a mid 80’s reissue.

    You know I was given this pedal by a friend over 10 years ago when in high school.

    Cool. Most people don’t know anything about the different Big Muff versions to be perfectly honest, and unless they are utterly obsessed about them like me I don’t suppose they need to.
    I helped another guy out yesterday on HCFX, he PM’D me about a muff that the seller said was a version 3 but I knew as soon as I looked at the PCB it was a version 5 opamp version, he was thrilled cause that’s the exact version he wanted.

    the most obvious reason it can’t be a reissue is the fact it doesn’t have an LED…..I always look for that first, if it has an LED it’s a modern pedal, if it doesn’t have one it’s old!

    Nice pedal you have there anyway, well worth hanging on to. :thumb:

    Thanks! I soldered the 9v- back on tonight and got to play it again for an hour.

    Can’t believe how much I missed that sound.
