Yes!. I’m a great SY follower and also Thurston and Lee’s solo career. But Lee went a step further as he’s been more involved with guitar customizations.

He got one of the best ideas to improve easily the sound of a Jazzmaster… and that’s it. In fact, is putting a pair of medium-output humbuckers, so you can get more punch while still sounding warm and nicely, like a Jazzmaster is.

He’s always been a great Telecaster ’72 Deluxe player, so I suppose he wanted to get a similar sound in his Jazzmaster (he also used this customization for a Jaguar, too!), he noticed that Wide Range add “some more” to Jazzmaster but was very respectful with its sound.

Reissue FWR’s are not like original Seth Lover-designed Wide Range. Reissues are made of Al-Ni-Co, where originals have the Cu-Ni-Fe magnets. Reissue Fender with FWR’s use to mount 250 kOhm pots which makes them to sound muddy – great flaw!.
The best way to take advantage of FWR’s is to use at least 500 kOhm pots or even the 1 Meg Jazzmaster originals (log pots recommended!).

The difference between Lee Ranaldo and me is that I can’t afford an original Wide Range so I had to use reissue FWR pickups (I suppose he has all original Wide Range), which are not the same of course, but still retain the original concept: “Feel like playing a Gibson in terms of output without losing the Fender touch”.

So I took Lee’s idea and did the same. In my case, the add. reason was that despite liking ’72 Tele Deluxe, I don’t like maple fretboards (I discarded the idea of buying one as I prefer rosewood fretboards), so I decided to apply the idea to Jazzmasters, which suit much better… and it really works. Thanks Lee!

Musically, I admit two kind of influences from Lee Ranaldo:

    – The one from his SY guitar work as a melodic/ambiental counterpart to Thurston Moore’ style. As Lee’s not the lead singer he’s got more room for “lead guitar” (but not in the straight rock way).

    – His solo career: He made me to be interested about feedback possibilities and building music from drones, or making layers of sound. But sometimes he tends to be a bit repetitive. Maybe sometimes, he focuses too much on feedback and noise, while I prefer to use layers for improvising melodic rhythms and leads.

Lee Ranaldo and Dylan Carlson (Earth) are my two drone guitar-masters, so you’re right!

My “solo” works is more guitar oriented, while I play with bands I usually tame this sort of influences unless I jam or play live.

    Regards

    Nacho.

    Cool dude.

Sonic Youth is my favorite band.

Guitar wise, I identify with both of them, but neither completely.

    Hello:

These are my “Six Pack” I use extensively to play with my three bands and for solo projects. I’m an “almost only Fender” player, except for the weird Gibson Sonex 180 from 1.981. I’m absolutelly in love with the Jazzmaster (I own some MIJ and CIJ models from 90’s and early 2.000’s) and with my more than weird Strat (Mex. Deluxe Series).

I work with three different tunings: C, D and E standard (no open or drop tunings). I usually set a pair of guitars for each tuning, so I always have a replacement guitar available. Having this set implies continuous use of all six, despite I have a “standard” pair for using with each band.

    The tunings I use for each band are, respectivley: E & D, C & D and E & C.

As a heavy-custom work, I’ve rechristened all Fenders, but the Gibson keeps all original!

    * Standard E guitars: Fender JazzSmasher and Fender StratoBlaster.
    * Standard D guitars: Fender JazzBlaster and Gibson Sonex 180 Custom.
    * Standard C guitars: Fender FatMaster and Fender FatBlaster.

I use medium-output humbuckers, like FWR and SD Antiquity HB’s and SD Quarter Pound for Jazzmaster. The Gibson has its original pickups (high output Gotoh humbuckers).

    Here they are:

    •Â ’04 Fender Telecaster – USA Nashville B-Bender, Maple / 3-color SunBurst

    • ’97 Fender Stratocaster – USA Lone Star HSS, Rosewood / Shoreline Gold [pictured]

    • ’01 Gibson Les Paul Standard – Rosewood / Gecko Burst [pictured]

    • ’08 Gretsch Electromatic – China w/ 125 yr. Anniversary seal, Rosewood / Sunburst

    • ’96 Warwick Streamer, 6-string B/O neck w/ basslines p/u’s [pictured]

I love them all just the same, for their own reasons…… See, I’m a good ‘papa!

(my wishlist consist of adding a Rickenbacker 360, Nashville Power Tele and a Fender Jazz-5 bass)

    Mine are:

    • ’05 Gibson Flying V – Cherry

    • ’08 Epiphone Casino (China) – Sun Burst Finish

    • ’07 Epiphone Thunderbird – Pehlam Blue.

The bottom is a bass, but I figure it counts.

I love them for their own reasons. I play them all about equally, though lately the Casino is getting a bit more attention because it’s the newest (and the insane squeal the Casino (fully hollow w/ P90s) creates with a Big Muff).

I’m new to this site, so bear with me. My guitar collection has been vast. I have owned a epiphone Beatle Bass, left handed, a Cordoba 12 string accoustic, an Applause 12 string, a les paul 1963, a Hondo 2 Mustang, a Aria 12 string accoustic, a 1963 Kay archtop, a 71 Fender Stratocaster, a Takamine 12 string accoustic/ electric, a 66 Silvertone with the amp in the case, a Hofner Beatle Bass in Green color, a Fender Squire. Here’s a pic of the Hondo 2 Mustang 1974 issue.

first off, THANK YOU JULIAN !! i have had over a 100 different guitars over the last 20 years, one of witch was the same Hondo LP lawsuit you showed us. i unfortunately sold it about 10 years ago to purchase a different guitar. but i loved that copy and i all ways get into argument’s over the fact that it was of any decent quality. and i usually agree that most Hondo’s are not very good but mine was very much indeed! mine had a dark trans wine red finish with full cream binding and chrome hardware, other than that it was the same as yours.

anyway getting to what i currently have….

CM Marvel (?) ……neck threw, oil finish, EMG active pickups (very very nice guitar and i got it cheap! i posted a topic previosly asking if anyone can identify it for me with pics. search for “can you name this guitar”

my favorite style of guitars has all-ways been old ICEMAN guitars. so my second guitar is a…….

personal made ICEMAN custom copy….dark trans red finish on quilted maple top. white binding, trans black finish on back and sides over ash. dark black pearl custom shaped pickguard, chrome hardware including roller LP (tunomatic) style bridge with tailpiece, and humbucker rings, and chrome dome knobs with pearl tops. Seymore Duncan Blackout’s active humbuckers. active electronics with built in overdrive in a 3rd push pull pot to activate. no current pics yet but i will post when i do and get the time. its basicly what ive all ways wanted my favorite style guitar to look like and option’s I’ve all ways wanted in an ICEMAN. and its built to wail! ive never played a guitar with so much power! :metal:

the 3rd guitar i have is another one I’m building that’s still in production but near completion ..

a copy of a tele in the 70’s deluxe or custom style. all trans black finish with chrome hardware, rosewood fretboard, large pickguard like they usually have but in dark black pearl and it only supports one humbucker, the other is in the bridge plate (string thrue) like normal but it is a humbucker as well, Wilkinson tuners, roller tree’s, LSR Fender roller nut, chrome dome knobs with black pearl tops. 4 control pots, 2 volume 2 tone, volume ones are push pull for coil splitting, i wanted to make a guitar that usually wasn’t me, but i made it for metal, but with the coil tapping i can still get the tele sound. humbuckers i got from a custom shop off of Ebay. they sound great, there standard size not large like an original tele deluxe, and the covers are very original looking. the maker calls them “Toastybuckers” (try a search) there chrome covers like a LP but the instead of individual holes for just one side, it has one long slot for both sides and has a fine screen over the poles, so they all most look like mini antique toasters, hence the name.

when this is done i will also post pics.

o and all my guitars get Schaller strap locks, ill never play without them, there a good insurence investment! :thumb:

Nice toronado :-) it is a very nice guitar, but unfortunately very rare here in czech republic

    i own

Acoustic: early 90′ massive mahogany dreadnought by Sigma guitars (a company that makes licenced cheaper versions of Martin&Co;)

electric: later 80′ Yamaha Pacifica 302S telecaster with DiMarzio Twang king single pups. love it, compared with Fender Koa tele and Higway one, i’m glad i bought it (it was a real steal, the seller collected vintage Gibson SG’s and didn’t have a place and use for the Tele anymore…)

Yeah, it’s a funky piece of dry wood. Great pickups, and very comfortable to play.

BTW, check out my band on MySpace (click on the link in my signature). I used the Les Paul for both songs playing on our page right now. ‘Too Much Room’ has that guitar all over it and the solo in ‘Oceanbound’ is also the LP.
