There are at least 2 or 3 different versions of the vintage stereo memory man made prior to 1983. I have one of the latest versions with the yellow silk-screening.
It only has a max delay time of about 300 ms, so you won’t be able to do dotted eighth Edge style rhythms or vast ambient landscapes – but slapback delays, and dreamy quarter note rhythm can be accomplished.
Tonally, they sound great if you can find one without the dreaded clock whine. My first unit had the whine, so I got rid of it. My yellow version is super clean and quiet. The repeats are very crisp for a bbd delay.
The chorus is not very flexible as you cannot control the rate of the modulation – it is fixed at a slow flanger-like sweep. Also, the delay time is fixed at about 40ms. But when separated into extreme pan, it sounds really huge and dreamy.
The DMM can do most everything that the SMM can do, except the stereo chorus; though the DMM can do a chorus with a direct out, but it’s not the same. Also, the DMM has almost twice the delay time, a preamp volume control, and the ability to use 2 fixed modulation rates simultaneous with the delays. There’s good reason why the DMM is twice the price.
