i’m looking at buying an 1970’s small stone but the current owner says it has a ticking noise that occurs and is more noticable at higher rates and with the voicing switch up. anyone know how to fix it and how much it would cost? sorry if this has been posted before, but i’m posting from my phone and searching is just a huge hassle.

Shove a 47 uf (or higher) electrolyic cap across one of the ICs in the middle of the board or across the oscillator IC should take care of it.
Otherwise, it’ll be the caps (are there caps bypassing the powersupply in those versions?): old caps = high impedance = you’ll get LFO bleedthrough into the audio path.Good excuse for getting it cheap though, but shouldn’t be an expensive or difficult fix if you’re good with a soldering iron.
See what Ron has to say though…July 28, 2009 at 5:13 pm #100065dmc777MemberMy new deluxe electric mistress does this the more I turn the rate up. Get the rate up til about 9 and it’s tick, tick, tick…I figured it was just normal.

haha, and thanks for the help. i already decided i’m going to buy it. for 65 bucks, i figure if i put 20 into it fixing it, i’ll have a bad ass phaser for way cheap. i had the nano version for awhile and loved it and from all accounts, the vintage ones are better in every way.
July 28, 2009 at 8:36 pm #100077dmc777MemberI really like my Sovtek Stone. It’s the last black one that was put out. It has a little bit of volume drop but not bad. For the price it’s hard to beat them imo. I would like to try the nano though as I’ve heard they solved the volume drop and sounds really good.
July 28, 2009 at 8:43 pm #100078bluehuricaneParticipantthe nano sounds great, and i liked the black russian stone too, but i tried it side by side next to a new usa one and the usa one beat it out by far (to my ears at least)

July 29, 2009 at 4:53 am #100101devnulljpParticipantYou can fix the volume drop with a simple resistor value change.
There’s details in the mods pages.July 29, 2009 at 9:17 pm #100121dmc777MemberQuote:You can fix the volume drop with a simple resistor value change.

Depending on which version you have, it’s a couple of resistor value changes.
There’s info about the mod here for the v3 I think.
I found some info here that talks about my v.2 — issue J — and a schematicI also posted some pics here after wrestling with the same question for mine.
