Here are some pics of three of my Vintage Big Muffs.
From L to R: 3003 v2 Lamb’s Head FS36999 (2N5088); 3003 v3 red/black BC239C; 3034 v6 S2N5088 (tone bypass)
Is there any reason the two with the 3003 board have the same weird settings on the pots so zero/ten are:10 o’clock/8 o’clock on volume
2 o’clock/11 o’clock on tone
4 o’clock/2 on sustainIt’s not just the knobs either, because those are D-shaft pots they only fit on one way.
At first I thought it was just some weird thing with an old pedal, but both muffs with the 3003 board have the same offset. Seems unlikely to be coincidence. Anyone else got one to compare?
Top pic is all knobs turned all the way anticlockwise to zero.
Bottom pic is all knobs turned all the way clockwise to ten.

That is one nice collection of muffs,
Sorry to hi-jack your post, but I was just wondering how does the tone-bypass switch affect the sound of the muff? I seen one with this switch in a local pawn store and am really intrigued by it.May 16, 2009 at 8:56 pm #96775The EH ManModeratorIt’s because the 3003 board has all the pots mounted under the board w/ their leads wrapped around the edge of the board. The Tone pot is the only one mounted to the top edge of the board (upside down so the body is under the board) and the Volume and Sustain pots are mounted to the sides of the circuit board.
The later boards had the pots all mounted right side up w/ the leads soldered through the circuit board along the top edge. The circuit board is only supported by the leads from the pots.Edit: woo-hoo! My 300th post!
