Hello peepz,
I really like this effect(exept the noisegate therhold is a little high)
But i can’t get the midi working.
My setup is midi keyboard (casio) pluged into the v256. My microphone and guitar in and out. Please help me out, cous I’m starting to think it’s broken allready and I’ve just bought it.
Any advice is welcome.
February 2, 2010 at 8:25 pm #107072julianModeratorI don’t have a V256 or a Casio synth, so I can’t try this stuff out myself first, but I’ve got a couple of things you should check.
Well first double check the manual and make sure you’re doing everything right. Below is the section about MIDI from the V256 Vocoder Manual page. It’d also be wise to dig up your Casio manual. Another thing to take into consideration is that older MIDI equipment wasn’t as codified as it is now. I’ve got a Sequential Circuits synth from 1981 and I’ve read it won’t work with stuff not made by that company without modding it!
Quote:The V256 has a standard 5 pin MIDI input jack. You can play the V256’s internal synthesizers using a MIDI keyboard or sequencer. Out of the INST output jack, the internal synthesizers will be heard the same way an instrument input will be heard. If the INST output jack has the blend set 100% dry, only the dry internal synthesizer, “played” by a MIDI controller, will be heard. If the INST output jack has the blend set at noon, a mix of the dry MIDI controlled internal synth and the wet vocoded effect will be heard. With the INST output jack at 100% wet, the dry MIDI controlled internal synth will no longer be heard, only the vocoded effect will be heard.Additionally the V256 can receive control messages from a MIDI controller or other MIDI device so that every function in the V256 is MIDI controllable. Below is a list of the MIDI control parameters. The default setting for the V256 from the factory is OMNI OFF, set to channel 16.

I’ve done everything as described on the manual, but I will try a newer midi device tomorow, and see how that works.
February 2, 2010 at 10:48 pm #107075julianModeratorAlso, have you tried your Casio’s midi with any other devices?
February 3, 2010 at 7:24 am #107085justindustriesMemberYes and that works just fine !
February 11, 2010 at 12:32 am #107367kenflaggMemberI am having the same problem with my pedal. I plugged in both a Novation K-Station and a Yamaha Motif ES7 as midi sources to no avail. I also tried two different MIDI cables. I tried out of both the Mic and Instrument outputs, with the mix in both directions, on every MIDI channel. Nothing.
February 11, 2010 at 1:48 am #107372kenflaggMemberUpdate: I got MIDI to work, after a bit of finagling and, er, manual reading. The default setting for the internal synth is to respond only on channel 16. Once I got that working, everything operated perfectly. I suppose they chose channel 16 to avoid conflict with other synths in the MIDI chain.
What a sweet piece of kit!
March 2, 2010 at 11:19 am #108097ConanParticipantI also have problem trying to get it to receive MIDI.
Tried Midi Ch.16, also read thru the manual a few times, have also checked midi cables, etc… Seems like my pedal somehow will not respond to MIDI at all. Have tried sending it Notes, Midi CC, even tried every midi channel, still no joy. Everything else works except MIDI.Anyone knows any other ways to test or reset this ?
Cheers
March 2, 2010 at 5:37 pm #108109justindustriesMemberFor me putting the midi device to ch16 worked !
Thanks for that.
But for you I don’t know yet I’ll have a look and if if found something I’ll let you know.March 4, 2010 at 9:27 pm #108183Flick (EHX Staff)ModeratorQuote:I also have problem trying to get it to receive MIDI.

Does your V256 work normally otherwise? Have you got it working with just the internal synth, changing pitch using the PITCH knob?
March 23, 2010 at 2:39 am #108732mrzoomyMemberHad the same problem. The unit works on MIDI channel 16. Manual is not real clear on this, but once my keyboard is set to channel 16 it works like a charm.
May 11, 2010 at 12:24 pm #104157rehellerMemberThanks for pointing out the solution for the MIDI problem. Yes, a somewhat more explicit note of the default channel might have helped. Had the same problem solved yesterday!!! Dang, what a tool. It’s incredibly versatile. And if you think what can be done if you not only play it, but program it with MIDI from a sequencer. EHX Vocoder 256 – my newest favorite toy!

July 1, 2010 at 3:27 am #109914rogersadrianiMemberOk, the default setting is channel 16, but I have a guitar synth Roland GR-20 and this unit uses only channels 1 to 11 to send information. So I can’t play the V256 synth through the midi out of the GR-20. Can I change the setting of the default channel (16) of the V256??? This would be awesome!!! Thank you.
July 1, 2010 at 3:38 am #109915rogersadrianiMemberOops, I think I found the solution. If I set the OMNI to ‘ON’, the V256 will receive the informations through all channels. But to do this, I have to make the first connection through the channel 16. Is it correct?
