how many voices of polyphony has the synth in robot and drone mode?, sounds poly in the demo, if so, is there a mono mode with MIDI portamento(is there any glide at all from the synth?)
is there a diagram or some explanations of the voice architecture of both synths and how the tone knob behaves in the said architecture?(ie, cutoff, resonance, ringmod, FM?)
im really eager to receive my v256 to try that out, but the manual is a bit skimpy on the synth side, even having “playing” in quotes in the midi section
also, is there a way to do software updates since it has a MIDI in? (just asking cause the MIDI channel 16 thing is really bugging me, and i hope it can be fixed(or is there a MIDI CC in omni mode to set the default MIDI channel? see https://www.ehx.com/forums/viewthread/4788/ )

July 25, 2011 at 4:22 pm #105811muzik 4 machinesMemberok here’s come the bad news, it has NO PORTAMENTO or SLIDE
polyphony is many but the voice allocation sucks(voulume doubles with every note instead of being reduced (i blew my talkbox with a chord)July 29, 2011 at 1:42 pm #104247jackilocustMemberyeah, the internal synths don’t have a built in portamento function. but I’m sure you could possibly do it with the right midi controller. I wouldn’t know, though, because I really only use the vocoder settings with an external instrument. for the record, though, each of the vox robo settings has only one voice, the single drone has two, and the major/minor drones each have three. you can’t portamento between them though. they’re meant to work like chords. I hope this helped, at least a little.

July 29, 2011 at 1:53 pm #102987jackilocustMemberoh, also, the tone knob cuts treble frequencies as you turn it left of the center position, and random harmonics are added to the instrument signal as you turn it right of the center postions. if you’re using the internal synths, it creates a frequency multiplication of the synths and works pretty much like a ring modulator.
again, I hope this was helpful.August 11, 2011 at 4:44 am #115788muzik 4 machinesMemberQuote:yeah, the internal synths don’t have a built in portamento function. but I’m sure you could possibly do it with the right midi controller. as for the voices, avery mode in MIDI, has plenty of voices (over 10 for sure, I lacked more fingers after that lol) and to make thing worse, the synth algo has no real voice allocation volume compensation, so the out gets like 6db louder with every note creating a clusterfuck of clipping
i really hope they put a sysex update to fix this and the midi channel lockout (tho that part i managed to make work with my midi time piece
and since its really just a softsynth running on a dsp chip, they could even make it a fully VA with filters and midi controls if they wanted to(limited only by the chip speed), but i’m sure they could do a midi sysex update adding mono/poly switch on a MIDI cc and portamento on cc#5 (and fix the volume problem too)biggest problem with no mono mode is if you play it manually, you need to be PERFECT and NEVER EVER overlap 2 notes cause 1 it makes a big volume bump and it sounds crappy, especially if you try to “solo” in a chick corea way while vocoding/talkboxing
Quote:also, I’m not sure if these are meant to be used in immediate conjunction with talkboxes… how do you have it setup, out of curiosity?my setup is a bit abusive for this
mic goes into mic in as expected
nothing goes in instrument inthe direct 1/4 instrument out is sent to my amp and talkbox (actually there is a dist+, a wha, a volume pedal and a leslie simulator before the amp(oh and i use a line selector, more on that later))
the talkbox tube is brought back at the mic
the XLR out of the v256 is sent to the FOH (not really but ill explain later)
so with mix set to dry, in every mode there is a synth signal coming of the inst out (saw for robot, organ like on every other)
here comes the line selector(Bos LS2)
the synth signal is sent to the input of the LS2
loop 1 send is looped back in loop 1 returnloop 2 sent sends to the fx chain and amp/talkbox
loop 2 return gets the V256 output(so mic on dry and vocoder on wet)LS2 out goes in my mixer
so switching on loop 1 i get the pure synth (hence the disto, wha, and leslie, so i can use it as another synth)
switching on loop 2 gets me the v256 outputso if i set mix to dry, i have a plain mic with sound in the talkbox tube so i can use it
putting the mix to wet brings the vocoder, i just pedal down the volume in the pedalboard to stop the tube from blasting saw wave in the mic and can talk/sing in teh vocoder ou autotunerusing inst pitch mode)

again, I hope this was helpful.not actually, the tone knob 9and for that matter the formant and slide tme in some modes and the bands/resonance in the vocoder modes) are applied uniquely to the vocoded sound, not the internal synth
the synth is a plain saw wave with vibrato via mod wheel, there is NO other tone shaping, no enveloppes, no filters, no FM, AM, ring or any modulation, 1 pure saw wave
and the drones are an organ like tone, again with no control besides vibrato/vib speed and bend
sorry that was a long reply
btw here’s a pic of the setup for the v256
